The 2012 Guyana census

Posted By Staff Writer On July 21, 2014 @ 5:01 am In What the People Say | No Comments

This week we asked the man and woman in the street what they thought of the 2012 census draft report, which recorded a decrease in the population. Their comments follow:

Interviews and photos by Dacia Whaul

20140721aliceAlice Corbin, self-employed – ‘It is very bad. I think the population decreased because there are no jobs for young people. Single parents want an increase in income to pay their children school expenses, and so they migrate for job opportunities. If the population is to increase, cost of living got to go down.’

20140721shellyShelly Goodman, vendor – ‘The decrease is terrible. To me, they got to work on the country before people want to stay here. People do not want to live here because they can’t make a living here. The government got to look into this because this country so big and got a lot of potential.’

20140721brianBrian Chung, self-employed – ‘I think the population decrease is bad. This is a nice country, but certain things need to change. We need tourism to help fix that, before everybody go away. We need jobs and more business to keep people here, because things real hard. They leaving because they have no other option.’

20140721raymondRaymond Cambridge, public servant – ‘I think that the population decrease is not good for Guyana, but it is our reality. They (government) need to create more jobs for citizens and people will not migrate. I think that we would have been more developed by now if those who left this country felt that they had opportunity for a better life.’

20140721ricardoRicardo Grant, public servant – ‘The population decrease is not good. For me, cost of living needs to drop and more jobs for young people need to be created, if we want people to stay. People looking for betterment. Taxes need to come down, look at VAT, it’s too high. Security is another issue that needs to be looked into if people will stay in this country.’

20140721georgeGeorge Burke, senior citizen – ‘I think that the reduction is not good for Guyana or its development. If we want our population to grow, we need to ensure that the laws of this nation are followed by all. We have a lot of crime and nobody wants to live in a society that they don’t feel safe in. We need to get this place in order before we could encourage anyone to come here and live or come back here to live.’

20140721marilynMarilyn Moses, vendor – ‘Well if they got more jobs, then people would not be leaving this country so. More young people would be off the street and have something productive going on for themselves. If there are more jobs then I think people might want to come back and help develop Guyana. Until then the population will only continue to decrease.’

20140721lotettaLoretta Narine, businesswoman – ‘Well a population decrease is not good news at all. We need better security and jobs before people stay in this country. People will want to feel safe and know that they have opportunities if they return. We have to deal with the problems first, then people would want to come. Our politicians need to stop fighting, because we want Guyana to get better.’

20140721mohaniMohani Sookdial, pensioner – ‘The decrease is not good for Guyana. I think they [Government] should clean up the place and have more opportunities for young people if they want people to stay. Get rid of the drug dealers so that people would feel safe. Get all the destitute people off the streets and make Georgetown look like the garden city again, if they want the population to grow. And those in parliament need to stop fighting, because we want a better country.’

20140721kennethKenneth Thom, public servant – ‘The population decrease is sad, but it would not stop happening. We need a new administration that will think of people. We need jobs and togetherness. We have no togetherness, no initiative as a nation. The city needs to be cleaned.’

Nehru, which people , especially nowadays would want to do what u suggested. There's no sense in it nor any financial gain. And just for argument sake, what would they be working themselves up to? there's nothing on offer. The quality of life has deteriorated significantly over time in Guyana. Many would rather choose to slave in a foreign country or turn to a life of crime. Sad choices any way u look at them.

Bhai, Dat is BULLSHIT, THREE PEOPLE just visited me for THREE WEEKS, they would not want to live here.  They say Guyana IS BETTER. To each his own.  One works as a Public Servant, the other two are Housewives. One husband is a mechanic, the other dp part time Bodywork Jobs. But they have their Gardens and do go catch Fish from time to time.  One of the Family ate salt and Rice so that their son can get A MEAL a day while studying to become a Doctor in Cuba. He is now workinh at PHG for a small Freck for the next three years. So please dont shoot Bullcrap to me.

The excess of births over deaths was 124k, yet the population declined by 3k.  That means that approx 130k left.

I understand that you know neither Math or English, but these are the facts, and people who live in Guyana fully understand why people opt to leave.

Note the racial agreement on this.  10 years ago the Africans and Indians would be saying something different.

PPP will be a 40% party next election!

And you know that they arent doing that?  Corentyne, agricultural region, this area suffered the LARGEST drop.  In fact if one were to exclude Region 6 the rest of Guyana saw an increase.

So clearly those involved in farming are the most discontented!

Good for them,k but that doesnt change the fact that between 2002 and 2012 130k left Guyana, and only 50k of these migrated to the USA.

This must be three old people. No issue there. I have one visiting rite now and he don't want to stay here either. just change his ticket. But what about the young. this is what I'm addressing. what about those who are ready to join the work force. Where are the jobs? What does the Govt. have to offer?

The old people already doing that and they say things bad like rass.

Perishable crops are perishing, rice still in rice bag and no markets, fish stocks depleted in canals poisoned with insecticide, herbicide and weedicide runoff.

I wouldn't want to live there either. I can understand how those people felt spending their vacation in a stuffy basement in the Richmond Hill ghetto without any AC and in the middle of summer.
