Bhagwantie Seepaul being escorted to a holding cell at the Georgetown Magistrates' Court pending transferal to a prison. A 63-year old woman, who was allegedly caught with cocaine concealed in curry and custard powder, on Thursday pleaded not guilty to cocaine trafficking and was remanded to jail pending trial.

She isBhagwantie Seepaul of 90 Shuter Street, Ontario, Canada. She was allegedly caught with 3.058 kilogrammes of cocaine on December 25 shortly before she was scheduled to board a Caribbean Airlines direct flight to Canada.

After Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry named January 8,2013 for the commencement of the trial, Seepaul asked to go home and return. The magistrate told her that she could be granted bail only if there were special circumstances. Customs Anti Narcotics Unit (CANU) Prosecutor, Oswald Massiah told the court that the woman was due to obtain her Canadian citizenship shortly. She is also known as Shirley, Mary and Yvonne.

Relating the facts of the case, Massiah told the court that Seepaul arrived in Guyana on December 15 and went to Berbice where relatives had not expected her. However, the woman told the court that she came to Guyana to visit a sick cousin. The Prosecutor said the woman related that on returning to Georgetown on December 24 at the Berbice car park, a man only named Alex entreated her to stay at a hotel at Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara.

The following day, Alex returned, took her to Georgetown and transferred her to another vehicle. Massiah further related that at that time, Alex gave her packages to send for someone in Canada. The CANU Prosecutor said that after the scanner at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport detected something suspicious, a search and tests were done that confirmed that the woman was carrying cocaine.

Massiah said some of the cocaine was placed in a custard powder packet and the remainder was found in an extra  tightly sealed tin of Lala’s Curry Powder. When the tin was opened, he said, the cocaine was covered with curry powder
.

CANU said the woman provided no useful information about β€œAlex.”
