I am looking into doing some immigration research on my family and ancestors. I have some knuckleheads in my family who keep telling me it’s a waste of time.

I was told that a good place to start in Guyana would be at the Guyana National Archives. I don’t have any family documents, except names and date of birth. What can I expect to find at the Archives? How do I begin? Is there any other place in Guyana, museums, etc where immigration record is kept?

I was advised that the Archives do not have much information on Afros. If a person wanted to find info of Afro immigration from West Africa to Guyana, where would you go? Are these records preserved/destroyed/available?

Django or anyone...can you help with this?

Thanks.

PS: I will be at the Kaieteur Restaurant tonite with some buddies. Look for a guy with a hat that says "Make America Great Again-Dump Trump"

Is this the way you expected to learn something and get help from others? I am afraid you may not find what you are looking for.

Looking for African Ancestors at the Guyana Archives  will be a dead end.You are better off to ask family members of their relations and record it for future generations.

Your East Indian side of the family records can be found at the Archives, get your grandparents birth certificates, even if they are born in Guyana their parents,Immigrant Number,Name,Name of Ship and Year they migrated are listed on their birth certificates.

I was able to find mine, with my maternal grandfather birth certificate,he was born in British Guiana in the year 1893.
