PPP supports call for lower ferry fares between Parika and Supenaam

The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) says it  supports residents of Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam) in their call for a significant reduction in the fares of the two ferries working the Supenaam to Parika route.

A release from the PPP today said in part: The PPP maintains its position that there must be equitable distribution of resources and wealth across the country and therefore insists that the David Granger administration forthwith reduce the ferry fares. The Party is of the view this call is a just one, since the ferries are owned and operated by the state. The cost to cross the Berbice River Bridge return with a minibus and 15 passengers is $1,900, while the same minibus with 15 passengers pays $7,680 to cross with the Ferry from Supenaam to Parika and back. Therefore, residents of Region Two who are using the ferry pay in excess of 250% more than what those using the Berbice River Bridge pays. A significant reduction in these fares will no doubt have a positive impact on businesses as well as the farming community, the poor and vulnerable in  in Region Two. Further, PPP supports the call for the establishment of an oversight committee made up of primarily residents in good standing of Region Two, to oversee a total review of the operations of the two vessels, inclusive of their schedule. This review must take into consideration the need to give priority at all times to vehicles transporting perishable items, as well as those transporting the sick, elderly and the disabled. This review must also take into consideration allegations of favoritism, discrimination, bribery and corruption by persons employed at the Transport and Harbours Department leveled by those who utilize the ferries on a constant basis. The PPP reiterates its support for the residents of Region Two in this call and urges the Granger Administration to fulfill its promise of improved services to the people of Essequibo.

In other words: the PPP knew all along that the fares were far too high, but continued to impose it so that their friends could make money out of the plight of the desperate travellers. But now that the PPP can't get a cut of the proceedings any more they shouting for a reduction. Their supporters in those regions should take note of the fact that the PPP was robbing them all these years by making them pay too much.

However, as the political opposition, the PPP gotta do what it gotta do: OPPOSE AND POSE.

Gil, its more like OPPOSE AND CONTINUE TO DIVIDE.

Those in the PPP are a crooked bunch. I hope they find evidence to take them out of the political scene, for the sake of Guyana.

Its sad that the people continue to follow them like sheep.

Racist politics must end, or Guyana is doomed.

the [bold] 'conclusion' above is a fake, risible and moreso desperate and stupid

the economics of running a ferry that can carry only a few vehicles per trip is surely much different than that of a bridge deliberately built to allow NO foot traffic, rite?

and aside from the fact that these Sanata antiman set these fares when they were running things

why does the PPP "release" decline to inform what it costs each passenger for a ticket to ride the Supenaam-Parika ferry?

The PPP know fabrication of figures will easily fool their supporters and they will continue to follow as sheep.

I was wondering the same thing TOLA.  For 23 fricking years they were in power and it did not cross their minds for one second that this toll needed to reduce.

Now all of a sudden, ROHEE get BLUE BALL and she got to spew his rotten shyte.

Let us start with Berbice Bridge and ignore the PPP.

Quit prevaricating on nonsense. The economic situation thee is the same. Worse, the PPP knew they could not ask for cheaper fare because they placed two gas guzzling old Chinese recommissioned ferries in service in the area.

The situation here is terrible. We used to pay the miller per bag to mill rice. Somehow, to facilitate the PPP need to supply the PetroCarbide cash cow, the millers were allowed to take the paddy pending payment by GuyOil, pay farmers.

It was clearly a PPP poncy scheme that mate the shippers of rice ( and smuggler of gold and drugs as well) rich. It made distributors of oil rich. Millers are not rich. They are skimming and deferring payment to manage their business so they are the incidental crooks.  Most ,mills are barely scraping it.

Now the shipping routes are closed and the oil flow stopped it is for the APNU to manage this industry better. To do that is should not be in the business of buying or selling rice. It should help facilitate the market but stay out of it as commodity brokers.

Healthy markets use technology and develop financial instruments to overcome thief and mitigate risk. We need Silo farms to store grain for as long as a year. We need alternative processing of rice to other products ie stock feed, Marin, flour as additional sale items. We need factors, assigners, brokers etc facilitate the marketing of rice and returning cash promptly to farmers.

Fully agree with the part of your post I bolded. APNU needs to re engineer this entire process and undo the clusterfck created by the PPP. But the gall of these Indo racists pon GNI like that ahole Yugi to now suggest this is black man "ethnic cleansing" of indians when it's been going on for donkey years under the PPP. Now all the Petrocaribe money gone.

Brian, the government should  release the terms of the Berbice bridge contract and  let the chips scatter for all to see.

They have a responsibility to the people of Guyana who have a large investment on the bridge  and receiving little in return.

Expose the crooked Jagdeo and his Bobby gangsters.
