On Sunday Guyanese Students Association (GUYSA) will be holding its first fund raiser on Guyanese soil with what promises to be an exciting 7-a-side six overs cricket competition with the action scheduled to start at 09:00hrs.
The GUYSA is a non-profit organization that was established on January 1, 2016 and is the official student representative body for all Guyanese within the Cave Hill Campus of the University of the West Indies in Barbados.
Among the players confirmed to participate in this event are West Indies opener and three times winning Guyana Captain Leon Johnson. Guyana First-Class players Chanderpaul Hemraj, Amir Khan, Tagenarine Chanderpaul and Sherfane Rutherford are set to showcase their talent. Pulsating competition is anticipated since in addition to the City teams, Young Warriors of Berbice has already confirmed participation.
βWell we choose cricket since we believe itβs the sport that indentifies the most between Guyana and Barbados and also to generate interest and provide entertainment for the many cricket fans and simultaneously raise funds for a respectable cause,β said President of GUYSA 23-year-old Shaquille Williams.
βOur functions are to look after the Welfare of Guyanese students, promote Guyanese Cultural ethnicity, create opportunities to develop the skills of our members and contribute to the community,β said Williams a former Guyana Youth team off-spinner who plays for the UWI team in Barbados first division cricket.
Food and drinks will be on sale at the venue and there will be an admission cost to the Event. (Sean Devers)
