A woman was rushed to the hospital with a serious burn after her clothes caught fire in a Hindu temple in Queens on Sunday, an FDNY spokesman said.
The woman suffered burns to her leg inside Shri Trimurti Bhavan on 97th Ave. and 102nd St. in Ozone Park, officials said.
A candle may have started the accidental fire, which was put out before firefighters arrived.
Dr. Dhanpaul Narine, temple president, said the unfortunate incident occurred after services had ended at about noon.
“Everything was done. Services had ended. She was helping clean up. We light up incense for the Gods,” he said. “It was (an) accident. She was
walking from one end to another when it caught fire on the cloth.
“We had water in a bucket because we were cleaning. We all saw and helped put the fire out with the water,” Narine said.
Emergency responders brought the woman to New York Presbyterian-Weill Cornell Medical Center in Manhattan, the FDNY spokesman said. Her condition was not immediately released.
“She was taken to the hospital as a precaution,” Narine said. “She left in very good spirit. She was chatting and laughing with everyone. She’s doing OK now.”
