[www.inewsguyana.com– Venezuela has renewed its claim to Guyana’s territory, this time including an area where US oil giant ExxonMobil recently discovered oil.

Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro on May 27, 2015 issued an official decree creating the β€œAtlantic coast of Venezuela” which now includes β€œsovereignty” over Guyana’s territorial waters in the Atlantic Ocean off the Essequibo region.

This new extension of Venezuela’s claim to Guyanese territorial waters was made official in the presidential decree, No. 1787, and published in the Ordinary Official Gazette No. 40,669, dated May 27, 2015.

According to Guyana’s Former Ambassador  to Venezuela, Odeen Ishmael,  β€œa map, issued to coincide with this decree, indicates that Venezuela is now claiming all the territorial waters within the 200 miles range and blocking Guyana’s access to its resources in this area of the Atlantic Ocean.”

The Maduro decree is set amid Venezuela’s objection over oil exploration and concessions granted by Guyana to Exxon-Mobil, to explore 23,000 square kilometers of the Stabroek Block located within the area into which the new territorial claim is now extended.

Earlier this year, when ExxonMobil was about to drill an exploratory well in the area, Venezuela claimed the drilling area as part of its territorial sea.

ExxonMobil has already announced that it has found a deposit of a significant amount of oil in the controversial Stabroek Bloc, 120 miles offshore Guyana.

According to a statement from ExxonMobil, the oil was discovered in one of the two wells it dug. The Liza-1 well encountered more than 295 feet of high-quality oil-bearing sandstone. The well was β€œspud” on March 5, 2015 and the well data will be analyzed in the coming months to better determine the full resource potential.

ExxonMobil, an American firm, has a drilling and exploration agreement with Guyana. If the anti-American Maduro government interferes with that project, US President Barack Obama would like nothing better than to station troops and materiel in Essequibo. Commander-in-Chief David Granger will sign a letter of invitation, of course. That, and international diplomacy, will come into play.

Venezuela already claimed the Whole of Trinidad as within their 200 miles territorial waters.

And Curacao and Aruba, which are autonomous entities within the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

Maduro is merely sabre rattling.  He will do nothing.   Most of his petro products are sold to the USA.

Nothing new here. They're always claiming something. They should focus their attention on their toilet paper shortage rather than territorial expansion.

When I went to Venezuela I was told that your average person there doesn't care, and that this only comes up when the ruling class screw up, and try to shift blame.

Maduro will now attempt to rile up Venezuelans by inventing some conspiracy that the Americans sent Exxon to Guyana to sabotage Venezuela.

Maduro will be gone next election.  This man makes Jagdeo look like a saint.

Prior to the election I warned the ring leader of this group. Jay Bharrat, that his endless screams of Cheddi (and carrying such personality cultish behavior over to Moses Nagamootoo) would not win him favors in the coalition.

Guyanese have reached a point where they expect their leaders to galvanize the population to achieve its desired goals.  Not to be worshipped and idealized as communist leaders seem to demand.

When Burnham told you of conspiracy of the wicked Western world as an explanation for no flour or toilet paper did you believe?

Then why expect Venezuelans to be so stupid.  They know full well that Maduro is an over blown buffoon without an ounce of charisma.  He is gone in the next election.

As far as most Venezuelans are concerned Guyanese are a bunch of unassimilable foreigners, who don't speak Spanish.  Venezuela cannot even manage the territory which it has, much less adding more.  And for those two reasons, they have no business in "GOOYANA" (who they pronounce Guyana).  Guayana, the Venezuelan state next door to Guyana remains mainly undeveloped.

Once again, their stupidity leads to PNC dominance.  I realize why my parents were so conflicted about the PPP and Jagan.  Living in the US, blotting out my prejudices, I fully understand the US actions to look after its interest.

Hey bro, Guyanese to Guyanese, I hope you are correct, but I would not bank on it. That's all I'm saying.

I'm sure the Govt will start feeling out the US, UK and Russian positions with an eye on some type of international arbitration.  Venezuela felt shorted by the League of Nations so it might be time to take the case to the UN and arrive to a binding resolution.

You do know that there are almost as many Guyanese living in the Guayana state as on the Essequibo coast, mainly in Puerto Ordaz.  I haven't heard any tales that they are fleeing back to Guyana,  even as many of them are there illegally.

The UN has already declared that the existing borders for Guyana are legal.  Venezuela is merely being a bully.  They will not dare make claims on Trinidad, as that country enjoys a better image than does Guyana.  They dare not make their claims on the Dutch Antillean islands, as they would have to deal with the EU.  They dare not deal with Colombia, for obvious reasons.

So Guyana becomes easy as Maduro seeks to portray himself as a victim of US conspiracies.
