Dadasaheb Phalke award winner B.R. Chopra has always made thought provoking films which are social commentaries and Insaf Ka Tarazu is no exception. It is a story of a girl Bharati (Zeenat Aman) who had everything - beauty, a great glamourous career, the love of Ashok (Deepak Prasher), a sister Neeta (Padmini Kolhapure) and loses it all because a man Ramesh (Raj Babbar) brutally rapes her. And when she dares to seek justice, is "raped" again by her rapist's lawyer who publicly turns the rape into a slur on her character rather than what it is - a brutal violation of her body and spirit. As if this humiliation is not enough, the man tries to rape her innocent young sister. Will her sister have to suffer the way she did? or will justice prevail? Insaf Ka Tarazu became a milestone of Hindi cimena for many reasons - it was one of the first films to deal with the subject of rape as a social issue, it also remained at the center of a debate as to whether such a film, which showed rape so graphically, was actually thought provoking or merely titillation. It was also the film in which Raj Babbar made his unforgettable debut - as a rapist!
