Kalki's father, Joel Koechlin had come to India from France where he met Kalki's mother, Francoise Armandie. These two fell in love and settled Kallaty, a village near Ooty. Later, the couple got separated and Kalki's father moved to Bangalore whereas Kalki chose to stay with her mother.

Making her Bollywood debut with Anurag Kashyap’s film Dev D, Kalki is seen playing the role of a victim of an MMS scandal. Later, she turns to prostituting for high-paying clients to pay for her education after being disowned by her family. The movie gained a lot of attention from the audience for her powerful performance and has also won the Best Supporting Actress Filmfare Award.
