2016 Could End Up As The Worst Year In Terms Of 100 Crores, Here’s How!

Martini Shots, Bollywood, September 11, 2016, Authors: Yatharth Chauhan (Editorial Team), http://www.desimartini.com/new...hay/article37045.htm

2016 as a Box office year could really end up being one of the least successful years if its 100 crore grossers are counted. The year that has been single handedly led by Akshay Kumar’s three 100 crore grossers and a Salman Khan blockbuster, is going nowhere when compared to some of the previous years.

While 2016 is in its final quarter now, the chances of it suffering a humiliation are very high, here’s why-

In the last five year excluding 2016, last year was the worst since it could only deliver seven 100 crore grossers. As it turns, we only have four so far and chances of going past 2015’s figure look very dim.

There may be a number of reasons as to why the count of 100 crore grossers has fallen in the last two years.

While cinematic sensibilities occur to be the subjective findings around the data, the gloomy stardom of a lot of stars is also a major finding.

Let’s see the count that 2016 is at right now: (Last 5 years Data)

2012

Number of 100 crore grossers: 9

2013

Number of 100 crore grossers: 8

2014

Number of 100 crore grossers: 9

2015

Number of 100 crore grossers: 7

2016

Number of 100 crore grossers: 4 (so far)

The trends clearly indicate that the last couple of years especially 2016 has been a rather rough one for box office.

While some biggies were left to left to suffer at the ticket counters without enough content, surprise hits too remained under a limit and couldn’t make big.

If all these films had lived up to their potentials and turned out entertainers, we would at least have had four definite entrants into the 100 crore club. While superstars like Shah Rukh and Hrithik fell flat on their faces, no support could be generated from surprise hits either. Films like Tanu Weds Manu Returns and ABCD 2 had really sprung a surprise by making 100 crores in no time, however this films like Kapoor & Sons, Dishoom and Baaghi could only fly with wings chopped.

Possible Entrants This Year

While there’s no certain film to guarantee an entry into the club other than Dangal, some films could really turn the table if they turn out good.

The Ajay Devgn release that comes out this Diwali already looks like a blockbuster material, however that’s not enough. Going by this year’s trends, a film really has to be well made or well marketed to make it enter the 100 crore club.

2016 Could End Up As The Worst Year In Terms Of 100 Crores, Here’s How!

While chances of the film going past the coveted figure is quite low given its strict urban appeal, it may still fancy chances if it gets a positive feedback.

Dangal

2016 Could End Up As The Worst Year In Terms Of 100 Crores, Here’s How!

The only film that will certainly cross the 100 crore mark and possibly 200 crores too, is Aamir Khan’s Dangal that comes out in late December. But would that be enough?

Even if all four films go past the threshold 100 crores, 2016 would only just be able to get away from being the worst performing year. Going by what we’ve seen all this year, this is already a doomed year!  Let’s pray for some survival since we can’t have 10 Salman Khan releases in a year.
