5 Reasons Why Bollywood May Be Digging Its Own Grave!

Martini Shots, Bollywood, October 07, 2016, Authors: Yatharth Chauhan (Editorial Team), http://www.desimartini.com/new...ess/article38071.htm

2016 has come with a loud and clear warning for our film industry and we must really be awake enough to see the writing on the wall in red.

We are not headed for very progressive times ahead and its time we address the elephant in the room.

If at all 2016 has done something good for the industry is give us a heads up that AUDIENCES ARE NOT GOING TO THE THEATERS TO WATCH MOVIES.

We must be prepared to face the challenges ahead and it’s time we start making amends.

It’s not a healthy sign for the industry if the only films minting money at the box office is either starring Salman Khan or Akshay Kumar.

Shut Down of Big Production Houses

After Reliance, PVR and Warner Brothers stopped venturing into Hindi movies as much as they ideally should have, it became quite clear how that something’s wrong. With a production like Disney India folding its bag and leaving India in 2016, maybe we should understand how the business works. There is absolutely no return on investments!

Movie Delays

If zero return on investments wasn’t enough, more trouble is being caused because of film delays and shoot stalls. We are past that era when budget constraints used to put hold on a movie. We are now at a time when the fight is about the cost of the film. Every investor expects returns and when films like Jagga Jasoos take ages to be made or Raees takes ages to release, the entire investment is out through severe risks.

Star Salaries

It may amaze some of the people out there but a big film’s budget today is mostly consumed by the salary of the big star. If we were to look at a long term plan, the costs of the film should substantially be slashed so producers, distributors get a larger window to yield profits. This will encourage more houses to invest and will predominantly widen the market.

Movie Clashes

We are just not prepared to accommodate two films on the same Friday. We don’t have enough screens to justify both and a year only has 52 Fridays. This is causing more delays, divide in audiences and a big dent in business. For a population in millions that goes for the movies in theaters, even 5000 screens are not enough.

On the concluding note, we have to make our cinematic system so strong that failures like Fitoor, Bomay Velvet or Great Grand Masti dont prompt our houses to shut down their business. While producers have to strive hard to juggle up between dates because a star has a had a break up or he doesn’t want to do that film anymore, a better system can only be made if there is proper backing.
