Is this considered a miracle?

He could have fallen into an air pocket enabling him to get some air while underwater.

Whether a miracle or not, his family's faith has just been strengthened.

NBC -- A 12-year-old boy who was rescued from the surf in Long Beach, Washington, is amazing medical experts after regaining consciousness in his hospital bed. The limp, lifeless body you see in this picture belongs to 12-year-old Dale Ostrander.

On Friday, Dale was visiting Long Beach, Washington with a church group from just outside Tacoma when a rip-tide pulled him out to sea.

Witnesses estimate that Dale was underwater, without oxygen, for up to 20-minutes before rescue crews found him and pulled him out of the frigid ocean.

Father Chad Ostrander says "honestly we maintained that no matter what happens everything will be good because we have a strong faith in God."

Dale's friends dropped to their knees and prayed that he would survive but when he arrived at Ohsu he was barely breathing on his own and there was very little brain activity, the prognosis was grim.

Chad says "likely he's going to die. They didn't use those terms. No they won't do that, but they were clear. He was under water too long, without oxygen too long."

With Dale in a coma the Ostrander family kept vigil at his bedside from Friday until Sunday he laid there motionless then all of a sudden out of nowhere Dale opened his eyes shocking everybody.

Chad says "they never expected him to live. They expected him to be a vegetable, never walk, never talk, never say a word and that would be fine."

But apparently fine isn't good enough for dale because on monday he surprised everyone again.

Mother Kristen Ostrander says "we were trying to get him to cough, and he did, and we told him to do it more. I don't need to is what he said. First thing, everybody, he spoke, a whole sentence. It was amazing."

And the Ostranders can't help but thank the crew that rescued dale from the surf. Dale is by no means out of the woods. He has a long road ahead of him. In fact his parents are acknowledging the possibility that he may never fully recover. But so far he's shown that anything is possible.
