A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) Chairman David Granger said there is nothing vindictive about the recent move by three Alliance For Change (AFC) members to defect to his party.

“These are serious academics who want to make a contribution to national unity and national development, and they felt that their opinions and advice were not being adhered to where they were before,” said Granger.

Granger said he does not envisage the three AFC members who recently defected to APNU causing any challenges or rifts between the two parties. The three who crossed over to APNU are economist Dr Tarron Khemraj, Political Science Professor, Dr Asquith Rose and businessman Rab Mukraj.

Responding to questions posed at APNU’s weekly press conference at his office at Hadfield Street, Georgetown on Friday, Granger stated that he does not see the trio shifting towards APNU as opposing the AFC, but rather as “advancing the agenda for national unity and human development”.

“We are not on a hunting party, we are simply building a momentum and a movement so that likeminded people from civil society or any other organisations are free to come onboard and advance these two aims,” said Granger.

The AFC defectors, he disclosed, will now join APNU’s American group, noting that they were not offered any executive positions within the coalition.

Exclusion

Khemraj told Guyana Times on Thursday that it was the AFC that left him and not he who left the party, pointing out that since the 2011 general election to now, the party did not seek his advice on any issue or decision it made.

He said during the pre-election period, the party regularly obtained his input, but even with regard to the Amaila Falls hydropower project, it did not seek his advice.

The crossover of these three members followed the resignation of Dr Shamir Andrew Ally, who was a member of the New York Chapter. Guyana Times had obtained a copy of Dr Ally’s letter of resignation. “With regrets, I no longer wish to be involved with the AFC party,” Dr Ally had stated in his letter.

Dr Ally expressed deep dissatisfaction with the AFC leaxdership, saying he contributed his “scarce time, financial resources, energies, skills and contacts to the AFC Party”, and spent one month during November-December 2011 in Guyana, and saw on site the political realities in Guyana.

He stated that, on his return to Guyana in December 2011, he expressed his disappointment with the AFC internally and externally. “Many emails were sent to AFC leadership on my Guyana on site experiences on a number of issues, including finances, controls, discipline, management, leadership, et al,” he said.

“At the New York/New Jersey AFC chapter, a few individuals hurled insults, character assignations and caustic remarks to me, and no person in the AFC leadership, took concrete action to ensure that there will be no repetition of such behaviours,” Dr Ally lamented.

Meanwhile, in a statement on Thursday evening, AFC Chairman Nigel Hughes, who himself had resigned from the party before making an about turn on the decision, said the AFC is disappointed with how the issue was handled.

You call them pioneers? What pioneering thing have they done? They have been in several parties before hoping for the crumbs and now they moving on again. The public knows who the opportunists are.

If they are getting crumbs as members of the opposition then they are not opportunists. The real opportunists would be the ones flocking to the PPP to lick some of the soup flowing from the massive theft of state funds. Someone like D_G would fit the profile of an opportunist. A PPP when they were in power and when Burnham took over he jumped ship and slurped soup from Odo's trough. After the PPP regained power, the man is now a PPP once again. That's the real definition of an opportunist.

I don't think either of them will ever get into a beauty contest. It quite understood that uncle Ramu is chubby. Danyael way of describing uncle Ramu and aunty Priya is disgustingly gross. That boy takes liberty to insult our beloved president and minister Manickchand.

I keep hearing that the reason for the defections is that AFC did not listen to the defectors.  What I would like to hear is what they did not listen to.  What specific advice did they offer to the AFC that was rejected?

And, more importantly, will they be listened to in APNU?  They should have consulted Trotman (when he was with the PNC), Van West Charles, Aubrey Norton, and the faction which mounted the challenge for the PNC leadersship not so long ago.  Were they listened to?

Perhaps it was Amaila that broke the camel's back. It was talked about on Facebook and blogs that the AFC leadership ignored all advice from technical people like Mr Christopher Ram, Dr Khemraj, Mr Sasenarine Singh and others. Their cheques were already cut so the party procedures did not matter. APNU saved the country millions.

What opportunities was he gaining by jumping from the PPP to opposition parties when all the tiefin money is being shared among the PPP elite? You need to check what the meaning of an opportunist is.

I don't know the circumstances behind these folks going to APNU and leaving the AFC. Perhaps part of the equation has to be that the AFC cannot win an election. With all the dealings of the AFC leadership they will stay a 5 seat party for the foreseeable future. In that case I can understand why they would go to APNU. They might have calculated a unity of the opposition is necessary.

You have a very low opinion of our people. They are not all raging racists, you know. They vote for Afro leaders in Trinidad as Afros vote for Indo leaders there. That country is many times more developed than Guyana.
