Celebrating the queen of Gazals

She sparkled, her trademark diamond nose pin
adding to the glow of her complexion and the golden flow of her voice as she held the audience in awe," says an 81-year-old fan, remembering the girl born in the town of Bhadarsa, in Faizabad district, Uttar Pradesh, 100 years ago. Disowned by her father, brought up by a single mother, she started singing at the tender age of seven, unaware that she was on the way to becoming an icon. A century later, the nation continues to sway to the tunes of Akhtari Bai Faizabadi better known as Begum Akhtar or mallika-e-ghazal. Celebrating her 100th birthday, the Union Ministry of Culture has released a set of commemorative coins of Rs 100 and Rs 5, along with musical programmes to popularise Begum Akhtar's music.

UNLIKELY FEMINIST ICON

Today, her name is synonymous with ghazals, becoming an almost feminist icon, having broken the glass ceiling several times over the period of six decades. With over 300 odd music recordings to her credit, she broke away from the small mehfils and was among the first female singers to perform at public concerts, several of them in Ahmedabad. Unfortunately, it was during a live performance
in the city on October 26, 1974, when she fell ill, was admitted to VS Hospital and breathed her last on October 30, leaving behind a treasure of music in its truest form.

"Watching her perform live was a sight to behold. Her powerful gaze would constantly gauge the audience's reaction, looking each person in the eye and creating a beautiful rapport. She had a hypnotic appeal, her voice mesmerising... the audience was always in awe of her," remembers Amrish Parikh (81), instrumentalist and an ardent Begum fan, who we met on our journey to rediscover Begum in Ahmedabad. Parikh, who had the opportunity to host Naushad Ali and Dilip Kumar at his home, was never able to
gather courage to approach Begum. "She sparkled, her trademark diamond nose pin adding to the glow of her complexion and the golden flow of her voice as she held the audience in awe," reminisces the founder of Visarata Sur, a music group. Parikh holds the record of not missing a single live performance by Begum in Ahmedabad.

A VOICE WITH PATHOS

"Her voice had pathos, it was a voice that expressed the pain of one who has been denied something loved," remembers Dr GG Oza (81), an ardent retro music lover and one of the founder members of Medico's Listeners' Club. Devoted to educating the younger generation about the aesthetics of her music, he has done massive research on her life and times. "Her voice has kept many like me glued to music. Her words touched the soul, her voice modulations and the pathos piercing your soul. Begum had a turbulent childhood, she witnessed her father forsake her mother, who then singlehandedly raised her two daughters. She herself was an unwed mother at the age of 13. Music was Begum's way of venting out her grief which made it so intense, pure and beautiful." According to records, it was only after her marriage to a Lucknowbased barrister in 1945, that Akhtari Bai came to be known as Begum Akhtar. Unfortunately, her husband was not supportive of her art. Resultantly, she stopped singing for almost five years, eventually falling ill. And that was when, in a befitting manner she was 'prescribed' return to music as a remedy in 1949.

DEVOTED TILL THE END

Her famous ghazal Aye Mohabbat Tere Anjaam Pe Rona Aaya (there was always a demand of encore for this song) expressed the pain of love, says Oza. He was professor of medicine at VS Hospital when Begum was admitted on October 26, 1974 with complaints of chest pain, high fever and breathing difficulties.
"I wasn't even aware that the singer I had grown up listening to was in the hospital. I missed the chance of meeting her. I was devastated to know she died in pain and carry the burden of having been unable to serve her," he shares, voice trembling
