Bill Cosby: We Should All Be More Like Muslims

Comedian Bill Cosby is no stranger to the culture wars.

The iconic stand-up and star of the beloved sitcom The Cosby Show routinely weighs in on cultural matters.

This past weekend, Cosby penned an op-ed for The New York Post in which he detailed some of the flaws in modern society. He also suggested we should take a page out of the Koran if we want to have healthier families, less crime and more productive people.

I’m a Christian. But Muslims are misunderstood. Intentionally misunderstood. We should all be more like them. They make sense, especially with their children. There is no other group like the Muslims, who put so much effort into teaching children the right things, they don’t smoke, they don’t drink or overindulge in alcohol, they protect their women, they command respect. And what do these other people do?

They complain about them, they criticize them. We’d be a better world if we emulated them. We don’t have to become Muslims, but we can embrace the things that work.

CaribJ does not want to hear this. Bill Cosby is the thorn in CaribJ's racist side.

On the other hand, Cosby must not have heard of Guyanese Muslims who have a hallal version of alcohol and pork. Even that woman Khanam drink alcohol with men, the departed andrea the homo can attest to this.

You're saying that IndoG Muslims don't drink rum and eat pork?

He is talking for himself and alas he is fallible as the local drunk to this point. I do not want to be a slave to ritual head banging five times daily. I also do not know why Muslims are better than Christians or Hindus for that matter ( in the ideal sense).

The practicality is none afford any semblance of the promise. Further, islam more than most rely on official interpreters of the faith handed down to dutiful acolytes. If Cosby want to be a slave to diktat then so be it.

Bill needs to tell us why his daughter was a drug addict and his son was not a great success before being gunned down by a Russian. Also that he is a Baby Daddy who ignored an out of wedlock daughter into she embarrassed him with all his wealth to give her her due.

I suggest that you deal with your own folks, ,according to the New York Times, are walking around RH shirtless, cussing out in public, and engaging in massive orgies of rum drinking.

FM

Also druggie black youths are less likely to do hard drugs, or binge drink than other groups in this country. Certainly alcoholism is more a problem for Indo Guyanese youths than it is for young blacks.

At this point Bill has a guilty conscience over his daughter, being a baby daddy, and numerous allegations that he has sexually abused women, this while he was a married man.

People who live in glass houses mustn't throw stones. He is a millionaire and yet guilty of the SAME behavior of which he accuses ghetto males of having.

And the notions that Muslims "protect" their women is a joke. Apparently he has never heard about the honor killings in the UK and France. Sometimes just because some Muslim girl kissed her non Muslim bot friend. But when a Muslim rapes a Muslim girl in some Muslims countries, its the girl who is killed for "bringing dishonor".

It is because of these experiences that makes Mr Cosby an authority on what is wrong with his people and what they need to do to improve their lot. He is a great man and you should bow down and respect him.

Your RH negativity link is broken and hence a lie. And even if true, people walking around shirtless and throwing back a few drinks is not a crime as it is a common occurrence in the hot climate, it is better than robbing and killing as is prevalent in the ghettos of America where Blacks are the majority.

I don't know that you claim is correct so I will dismiss it as urban legend. What is a fact though is that Blacks are more likely to sell drugs as evidenced by studies as well as the jail population.

And I already pointed out that Bill is mistaken about Muslims, many of them drink alcohol, have extramarital sex, do drugs and eat pork.

This piece is not accurate, intentionally edited I would guess. See original here - http://www.breitbart.com/Big-H...ll-should-be-muslims If you look at the original article published at Breitbart and in The Post, you'd see that Cosby specifically mentions "Black Muslims". The word Black is intentionally excluded.

And now synonymous with the chants and battle-cry of terrorists. The prophet did have good wise words, but the sand monkeys have taken over the message and use it to indoctrinate gullible people and spread their medieval ways.

Muslims need to pivot away from the ME doctrine and gravitate towards to SE Asian practices which is closer to the word of the prophet.

Pakistan is not in the ME.

Most of the fabrication in Islam comes from SE Asia.

Muslims nees to move away from both SAE and ME and go back to the Quraan and Sunnah

Druggie if Bill, an extremely wealthy and very socially connected man had problems with at least one of his kids, and engaged in behaviors that he deplores among men much less able than he is, then I suggest that he has no moral authority to make comments.

Black youths are not noted to be substance abusers in large numbers compared to whites and Hispanics. He had a daughter who was. He displayed the same irresponsibility that he accuses black men of having by engaging in unprotected extra marital sex resulting in at least one pregnancy. Their excuse is that their unemployability means that no sensible woman would want to marry them. Whats his excuse?

The RH link is active on another thread right here. I note that you chose to ignore it. I suggest that its not a very flattering view of the people who live there.

I see nothing great about a man who is wealthy but yet engages in the same behaviors that impoverished and unemployable men engage in. Out of wedlock kids who he ignored, and sexually abusing women.

People should be judged by their actions and not by their words. Bill is more part of the problem, than he is part of the solution. Why does he expect high school drop outs with criminal records, and therefore limited ability to be suitable parents or to hold down a decent job, to behave properly, when he with his millions, choses not to?

From Time Magazine. Blacks are more likely to be arrested for drug possession because police are more inclined to search them.

The jail system is a money making machine. Upstate NYs economy is based on it as are many other poor white communities.

The vast majority of first offenders were arrested for non violent crimes, usually drug possession. Of course a criminal record just about locks out people, especially black males, from subsequent work, so it will be of no surprise if many of these people turn into career criminals thereafter.

The issue is that if the police only search blacks and Hispanics, and not whites, then whites walking around with drugs do not get arrested. So the under representation of white males for drug possession has NOTHING to do with any notion that they are less guilty of this.

One thing though is as the police forces become more minority it is likely that white kids will be treated as black and Hispanic kids are. Today I saw two white boys being searched because they walked between subway cars. Normally whites are allowed to do so and non whites get harassed if they do it. You will then see how many white boys are walking around with assorted drugs, and not just weed. The cops were plain clothes, either light skinned blacks, or Hispanic.

And this is why Bill's opinion is more credible than yours, he walked the walk and faced the demons, theory is no substitute to experience. He faced it and came out as a seer, that is why the scared straight program is so credible, reformed criminals are the best teachers of what not to do.

Bill Cosby seem to be getting under the skin on those looking to excuse apathetic behavior in the black community. And it is what I try to hammer into CaribJ's head all these years but he keep making excuses and blaming Indians. The statement below exemplifies Afro Guyanese situation in Guyana.

“There is this situation where people tend to think that we are all victims. Victim meaning somebody else is doing this to us. That’s not true.”

Bill Cosby’s ‘Tough Love’ Is Counterproductive

Bill Cosby in 2011.
LUCAS JACKSON / REUTERS

Bill Cosby in 2011

“Personal responsibility” is a theme frequently drawn upon by people addressing the social problems of the day, including problems that black communities face. Public figures issuing calls to action often challenge the role of the individual, although whether it works in better reaching the individuals who need to hear these messages is debatable. The bigger problem is that a message that exclusively focuses on personal responsibility without an accompanying clarion call for society itself to improve gives us only half of the answer.

No one exemplifies this problem more than Bill Cosby, who recently dictated an editorial to the New York Post in which he said,“There is this situation where people tend to think that we are all victims. Victim meaning somebody else is doing this to us. That’s not true.” The former star of The Cosby Show is known for making controversial statements directed to the black community. In 2004, at an address at an NAACP gala celebrating the 50th anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education, Cosby said “the lower-economic and middle-economic people are not holding up their end in this deal,” i.e., not following through on all of the hard-earned opportunities available in our time. While his statement upset many, it actually led to a constructive dialogue on black class differences and Professor Michael Eric Dyson wrote an entire book to unpack the issues that Cosby raised. But this time around, Cosby lays all the blame at the feet of black Americans who, he says, suffer from “a plague called apathy.”

He goes on to suggest that parents need to make better choices for their children, including not buying them sugary drinks. Otherwise, they pass the bad habits and health risks down. “It becomes a term of apathy because people say my father had it, my aunt had it. People then ask you, ‘What your mother die of?’ ‘Diabetes.’ ‘Grandmother?’ ‘Diabetes.’ These things don’t have to happen if you make the correct choice.” Cosby is completely justified in tackling the issue of juvenile diabetes. But what about addressing the pressing issue of food deserts and the general lack of access to fresh fruits and vegetables that disproportionately affect densely populated urban areas? To attack only half of a problem is no solution.

(MORE: Anna Holmes on Michelle Obama and the Delusion of Hecklers)

Then there is education. “Interview some schoolteachers. How many parents, on parent-teacher day, actually show up?” Cosby asks. “Not to Dunbar or some school where people are saying they want their child to become an engineer or philosopher or whatever else that requires one to do some homework. Go to a school where people are not doing well. How many parents show up?”

Of course parents should be more active in schools. There is no need to rehash the statistics that outline the educational-achievement gap in the black community. But the issue of education revolves not just around what the parents do, but what our elected officials and people in authority do as well. In the midst of massive school closings, where is the call for social responsibility for the city and state officials? In Cosby’s native Philadelphia, 23 schools are being closed to alleviate a deficit in the city budget. This negatively affects the involved and uninvolved parents, and of course the children who attended those schools. It is hard to say yes to education when our society doesn’t place enough value in it to keep the schools open.

To be fair, Cosby is not alone in thinking that black people in America need to do better. His views gained a great deal of traction, and elected officials have taken to challenging the black community to improve. Just last month, President Obama gave a speech at Morehouse in which he said, “There are some things, as black men, that we can only do for ourselves.” The problem is that such exhortations can embolden others to do the same, with much less understanding, like Gene Marks’ offensive post on Forbes called “If I Were a Poor Black Kid,” which completely ignored the structural and institutional problems that black youth have to contend with.

(MORE: Touré: If I Were a Middle-Class White Guy Writing About Being a Poor Black Kid)

There are a great deal of problems in black America and our American society in general. But if Cosby is really interested in combating apathy, it’s important for him to realize that there are larger, outside forces that can cause a sense of hopelessness in affected areas. Without a total picture of what certain communities have to contend with, Cosby’s supposedly well-meaning advice is not just tone-deaf but useless as well.

Hmmmm. Bill Cosby screams that black men are irresponsible. Then he raises a drug addict, has extra marital sex with a woman and ignores the child that results. And many women allege that he sexually abused them.

We should all do what he does.

What is interesting will be the excuses that he as a wealthy man has for his dysfunction, the same that he accuses others who are caught in a much more challenging life.

It turned out that you provided your evidence against your own point, Blacks at 5% and Asians at 3.5%. It was the Indians you were trying to badmouth, now you comparing Blacks against Whites, that you should take up with d2 since he is a white man. ahahahah

Guyanese Indians have very different profiles from Asians from countries like China and India. While I do not know what drug usage among Guyanese Indians is we all know that there is a major problem of alcoholism.

Druggie go and figure out what 10% of 43% is and leave more sophisticated reasoning to others.

So who is to blame for increasing Indian dysfunction which you are aware of as you have discussed this many times?

Crime is a growing problem in Guyana among Indians. I can only imagine if the average Indian male was built like a black man, instead of being shorter, thinner, and presumably weaker, how bad Indian crime would be. Due to these limitation Indo criminals confine their acts to other Indians.

100% of the PPP supporters here hate blacks. Indeed that is the ONLY reason why they support the PPP, which they hope will keep blacks in "their" place at the bottom. You know like Cheddi and his infamous "blacks are at the bottom"....then had to pretend that he was talking about American blacks when caught.

“There is this situation where people tend to think that we are all victims. Victim meaning somebody else is doing this to us. That’s not true.”

Compare Obama, a strong family man with Cosby, a sex abuser with (at least one) baby mama, an out of wedlock kid who he ignored, and a drug addicted daughter.

Obama has the moral authority to speak on the topic. Cosby doesnt.

On the other hand, Cosby must not have heard of Guyanese Muslims who have a hallal version of alcohol and pork. Even that woman Khanam drink alcohol with men, the departed andrea the homo can attest to this.

@ CARIBNY : And I suggest u get an IOTA of integrity, u spineless twit. No where did the NYT make those claims. Those are the claims of a member of the public. Even so , none of those behaviors are illegal. It is his right to comment on any social issue. All ethnic groups have their ills and its not "racist" to comment on those issues. What is RACIST is hypocrites like u who twist facts and hide behind race. You are a coward n a hypocrite. I just wish there were bright people here who actually cared to put u in your place. AND yes there are many racist commentaries here , but u put urself on a pedestal as some symbol of the judge of racism, holier than thou attitude when ur posts clearly reflect a lack of integrity and substance !!!!!

Eva you have never had anything to say about the many racists here. Maybe they say what you wish that you could but are too ashamed to.

Indeed if more people like you spoke ought against people like skeldon man, rev al and others then I would not have to.

Indeed this site is known in some quarters for being highly tolerant of bigoted remarks against blacks.

As to Bill. Well most people will suggest that its hypocritical to demand that impoverished black men should cease certain behaviors when a man as wealthy as Bill seems to not be innocent. Extramarital sex and a child out of wedlock who he ignored, except trying to shut her mother up. FACT...Bill made these payments and were he not guiulty he could have demanded a paternity test and rubbished the claim.

Yet he will have lots to say about some impoverished person who engages in this.

Then maybe you need to post a study about the IndoG's before you make these fictitious claims. By the same token I can say that AfroGs have a major problem robbing and killing Indians.
