The ninth and last Nawab of Pataudi was admitted to hospital on the 29th of August for a serious lung infection.

His condition deteriorated drastically in the last three days and he was shifted to the ICU of Sri Ganga Ram Hospital is New Delhi.

A bulletin issued by the hospital stated: "Mansur Ali Khan continues to remain critically ill in the ICU. He is on very high level of oxygen support requiring intermittent Bilevel Positive Airway Pressure (BIPAP). He is conscious and his cardiac function remains stable. He is being monitored very closely."

Further tests revealed the specific cause of his infection: he was suffering was Interstitial Lung Disease, a condition which prevents proper flow of oxygen between the two lungs.

The disease has no permanent cure and it takes the patient time to recover. Tiger Pataudi succumbed to the disease this evening.

Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi belonged to an aristocratic and illustrious family. His father, Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi, was the ruler of the princely state of Pataudi and captain of the Indian cricket team.

His mother, Sajida, and her sister were the daughters of the last Nawab of Bhopal. Pakistan's former cricket chief and foreign secretary, Shahryar Khan, was his first cousin.

One of the most dashing young men to have ever played for India, Pataudi had an impeccable cricketing record, as well.

Pataudi retired from international cricket in 1975 after playing 46 Test matches and scored 2,793 runs at an average of 34.91.

He got his six hundreds in his first 22 Tests but couldn't add one in the next 24. He led the country in 40 of his 46 Tests and guided the team to nine wins and was easily the greatest captain ever.

Pataudi's highest score, 203 not out, was against against one of the finest fast bowling attacks of Colin Cowdrey's England at the Ferozeshah Kotla here in his 10th Test match in 1964.

A car accident permanently damaged his right eye when he was 20, soon after he started his cricketing career.

Once asked by a journalist, how he played with one eye, Pataudi said: "In I fact see two balls. I hit the one on the inside."

New Delhi, Sept 22 (Calcutta Tube / IBNS) The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) mourned the death of former India cricket captain Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi, who passed away in a New Delhi hospital on Thursday evening. He was 70.

“I am shocked to hear the news of Tiger Pataudi’s demise. He was an exemplary individual, who guided Indian cricket to unprecedented heights, as batsman, fielder and captain,” said BCCI president N. Srinivasan.

“He revolutionised fielding standards in the Indian team, and across the country. In an age wherein a draw was considered as good as a win, Tiger Pataudi encouraged his players to go flat out for victory. He was an aggressive batsman who excelled in crisis situations, and showed the nation how to combat adversity.”

“I join my colleagues in the BCCI to express my condolences at his passing away. His services to Indian cricket will never be forgotten,” said Sinivasan.

Pataudi is survived by his actor wife Sharmila Tagore and three children, including Bollywood actors Saif Ali Khan and Soha Ali Khan.
He was suffering from respiratory problems and was in the ICU of the hospital.

Pataudi had brought India first ever overseas victory in the 1967 against New Zealand. He had captained India in 40 Tests.
He was India’s youngest captain.

He was nicknamed Tiger. He was the 9th and last Nawab of Pataudi until 1971, when India abolished royal entitlements.

He was a Padmashree.

New Delhi: Legendary India captain Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi passed away on Thursday evening at the age of 70 in New Delhi. Regarded as one of India's finest captains, Tiger, as he was better known, was suffering from lung infection and was admitted to the ICU of Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi. Pataudi was also the last Nawab of Pataudi until 1971, when the government abolished royal entitlements. He is survived by his wife Sharmila Tagore, his son Saif Ali Khan and his two daughters Soha and Saba Ali Khan.


Earlier on Thursday, Neeraj Jain, senior consultant and chairman of pulmonolgy (chest medicine) at the hospital said:"His condition has deteriorated since Wednesday and he is unable to maintain his oxygen level in spite of maximum treatment. He continues to remain in the ICU (intensive care unit)," . The hospital issued a bulletin saying: "He is on very high level of oxygen support requiring intermittent Bilevel Positive Airway Pressure (BIPAP). He is conscious and his cardiac function remains stable. He is being monitored very closely,"

The 70-year-old Pataudi was admitted to the hospital last month with what was diagnosed as interstitial lung disease, a condition in which the lungs do not receive enough oxygen and the patient struggles to breathe. The Mayo Clinic, a worldwide non-profit medical organisation, states on its website that there is no cure for the condition. He had taken ill since his return from England this summer after presenting the Pataudi Trophy — named after him to honour hos contibution to the sport in India and in England — to Andrew Strauss at the end of the four-Test series.

Pataudi became the youngest Test captain — a record that stood until 2004, when 20-year-old Tatenda Taibu skippered Zimbabwe against Sri Lanka — when he led Team India in Barbados in 1962. He was 21 and this would only be his fourth Test match — and the job was more daunting as he was standing in for skipper Nari Contractor, who was injured after being hit on the head by Charlie Griffith delivery.

He led India in 40 Tests — winning nine of them — and had a successful career despite impaired vision in his right eye which was damaged in a car accident. It was under Tiger that recorded their first away series victory, beating New Zealand 3-1. In his stellar career, Pataudi, who played 46 Tests, scoring 2,793 runs for an average of 34.91 with an unbeaten 203 being his highest score, smashed six centuries and 16 fifties.

Pataudi Jr, as Mansoor came to be known, was born to Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi, the eighth Nawab of Pataudi, and Sajida Sultan. He was educated at Welham Boys' School in Dehradun, Lockers Park Prep School in Hertfordshire, Winchester College, and Balliol College, Oxford. His father died on Mansoor's 11th birthday in 1952, whereupon Mansoor succeeded as the ninth Nawab of Pataudi. Pataudi, who married Sharmila Tagore 27 December 1969, was also chosen as Widen Cricketer Of The Year in 1968.
