First things first: Kabali has taken the biggest opening of the year across the country including all Hindi films as well. The film has also broken the record of highest Day 1 collections for a Tamil movie by registering over 21 crores on its opening day. However the film has still failed to break the biggest record that most people were expecting it to do.
The Rajinikanth starrer gangster drama has not been able to become the highest opener of all time. The film has garnered an earth shattering 42 crores on its first day but hasn’t touched 50. With this, Baahubali’s record of being India’s biggest opener remains intact. The Telugu/Tamil bilingual film had made over 50 crores on its first day exactly a year ago. While trade pundits were hoping the record would get shattered, the RAJNIMania has just fell shy of the coveted figure.
The film has been running to packed houses since yesterday all across the south region and an absolute madness has unfolded amongst Rajini fans. With all theaters in the region accommodating record number of shows along with record numbers of screens, the distributors had made sure the film reaches its maximum potential. However, Baahubali’s better performance in different regions of the country gave itself an extra edge.
Kabali on the other hand has been extremely thunderous in the overseas. The film has put an absolutely spellbinding show in US, Canada, Malaysia and UK. Going by the current trends, it’s safe to assume the film will go down breaking many records throughout its theatrical run.
Sultan being a festive release couldn’t touch the 40 crore mark in any day of its run while Kabali despite being a non-holiday release has done the unthinkable. However, the average word of mouth may ultimately play a major spoiler in the party that has started on a blasting mode.
