Hector Broomes, the son of Minister Simona Broomes, will be charged with assault causing bodily harm following an incident with his girlfriend.

The girlfriend, Gilibeth Rodgrigues, will face two charges, namely, assault and throwing missiles, Police headquarters stated Thursday.

“They will appear in court soonest,” a release from the Police stated.

An online media outfit had reported that Minister Broomes threatened the Commander with dismissal after her son reportedly assaulted his girlfriend.

However, the Commander, Senior Superintendent Kevin Adonis, vehemently denied this, Police headquarters stated.

However, a “thorough investigation into the alleged incident was conducted” and the Police said its legal advice is for Broomes and the girlfriend to be charged under the Summary Jurisdiction (Offences) Act Chapter 8:02.

Young athlete one step closer to achieving Olympic goals

Broomes Foundation sponsors plane ticket to access scholarship

DPI, Guyana, Tuesday, July 24, 2018

Eighteen-year-old Joanna Archer copped two medals for Guyana and a full scholarship to a US university after competing at the CARIFTA Games. However, her dream of becoming a well-rounded athlete was short one plane ticket, until today.

Minister within the Ministry of Natural Resources, Simona Broomes, through her children’s Broomes Foundation, presented Archer with her plane ticket so she can capitalise on her scholarship to Monroe College, New York.

Joanna Archer receiving her ticket from Minister within the Ministry of Natural Resources, Simona Broomes in the presence of her Grandmother Rosalene Giddings and others

“I would like to say thanks to the Almighty for guiding me into Minister Broome’s hands and I would like to say thank you very much for your courtesy and everything,” Archer said.

Archer noted she was approached by a number of scouts after she earned silver in the 4×400 metre and bronze in the 800-metre race during the Carifta Games in The Bahamas in March.

“I chose to go to Monroe College since they have a very good criminal justice programme along with a very good middle-distance programme. That is everything that I need,” she said.

Archer, who has been an athlete all her life, completed her secondary education at the West Demerara Secondary School with straight ‘A’s. She said her aunt is the inspiration for her law career adding she also hopes to one day represent Guyana at the Olympic Games.

“I just don’t want to go and appear at the Olympics I want to go and put Guyana on the map. I would love to go and medal for Guyana in the 800 meters [race],” Archer said.

Archer encouraged other young persons to continue to pursue their dreams even if they cannot afford it. “You don’t know who God will put into your path like God gave me [Minister Broomes] … just follow your dreams, work hard and meaningfully and trust the process,” she said.

Lock him up,

Simona Broomes,trying to play nicey.

Quite a role model,Simona should resign.

Minister’s son and his ex-girlfriend to face Court for allegedly assaulting each other

The son of a Government Minister and his ex-girlfriend are expected to face a Magistrate in Bartica after they allegedly assaulted each other during a row.

According to a Police statement, Hector Broomes, who is the son of Minister Simona Broomes, will face one count of assault causing grevious bodily harm.

His ex-girlfriend will face the same assault charge and another for throwing missiles. The charges follow legal advice and the two are being charged under the Summary Jurisdiction (Offenses) Act, Chapter 8:02.

Meanwhile, Police Commander, Senior Superintendent Kevin Adonis, is denying a report carried on the PPP aligned Citizen’s Report site that he was ever threatened by the Minister in the matter.

The Police Force said the Commander has “vehemently denied” the Citizen’s Report accusation.

Here is what News Source article says.

Unfortunately, this is a "typical" cultural trait of Guyanese men...some of them were raised in that environment and they feel its normal behavior to disrespect women.

But then again, when they see the way politicians behave at the national level, "dese tings become regula".

V

From what I read, it seems they both got charged with assault.  Let the court decide who initiated the violence and deal accordingly.

Both parties equally guilty.  His name made headlines because he is a minister’s son.

Read the fact on the case before making a prejudicial statement.

Who is that Broomes boy father? Is he a gentleman or a rogue?

Did it ever enter your thoughts to also question her behavior.

DV and abuse in Guyana is equal between men and women.  Men just walk away. We were taught to do that and never strike a woman.  Are women taught the same?

I am making an assumption that the assault was initiated by the male in this case. This is generally the trend from what I have been reading about Guyana.

Maybe the young lady was defending herself....none of us have the facts yet....but this is a private matter, nothing the do with Minister Broomes.

Bai, you have a new term to add to your Guyanese dictionary.

There is a trend in Guyana which has a very high rate of single Afro Mothers with children from several men.

She would refer to the various out of wedlock children fathers as "Child Father". Add this one to your dictionary. Prince might be upset that this topic has been discussed.

Case will be dismissed.

Of course. It may appear as if Granger supports vulgarity, eye pass and spousal abuse ?

It is shameless that Broomes is still a minister.

These people went into government in 2015 with an attitude that they are the big boss and they will do as they please and nobody can ever unseat them again. This is so scary for the people of Guyana.

This is very scary, the Broomes incident and Granger's endorsement of Broomes ruthless behaviour is an indication of what is yet to come.

Correct, "maybe" is not fact, you don't know the facts, so stop making judgements.  The police have charged both parties and will investigate.  Only upon their conclusion should anyone judge.  I will remain neutral until the police issue their report.

Dem AFC/PNC boys will defend these types of disgraceful AFC/PNC behaviour till the end. They used to cuss down the PPP when things like this happened.

Beri Beri was fired for his behaviour while Granger defends Broomes shameless behaviour.

Her son's actions will be thrown out of court as there will be political involvement. It Granger can defend Broomes, her son's actions will be defended too.

This is shameless since these AFC/PNC LIARS promises change. This is change, AFC/PNC style.

Absolutely correct. Can't generalize. There are also children out there who grew up in broken homes, abusive relationships etc., who have moved beyond their circumstances and bettered themselves.

Django is a perfect example of how kids can go astray. Society or a political party tell what to do.
