Mits, compared to the last government, at least this government and the police are more  active about the crime situations. Massacres of sleeping people and assassination of a government minister  took place  during the last government.

Perpetrated by the PNC/AFC who instructed criminals to massacre people for political gain.

What also surprised me during the last government, many of the crimes was against Indians, yet their Indian government did little to prevent it.  A lot of talk where I was present, but no action.

Because the police and soldiers were Black PNC supporters and were in cohoots with the PNC to rob and kill indians.

This is the truth, the PNC/AFC were behind the crime wave,  the PPP fell short by not inspiring their supporters to join the police and army en masse. Look at the US and see that whites are the majority in the armed forces and police. You can not outsource your security to another race and expect justice. That is why today in the US so many Blacks are killed by police. In Guyana it is the reverse, Indians are killed by Blacks with political ties. Get your head out of the sand and see the reality of Guyana.

â€Ķ nabbed by Police

An armed bandit who on Sunday evening attempted to commit a felony at Coomacka Mines, Demerara River was overpowered by the victims and later arrested at his house.

Based on information gathered, 67-year-old Stanley Couchman closed his shop on Sunday at about 21:00h, and went into the yard to close his gate when the suspect, armed with a shotgun, confronted him.

He struck the elderly man to his head and demanded cash and other valuables, but Couchman managed to raise an alarm and his son-in-law rushed to his aid.

The two men together subdued the suspect and relived him of the shotgun and four rounds of live ammunition, but the bandit managed to escape into the darkness. The firearm and cartridges were, however, handed over to ranks of the Mackenzie Police Station, and a report was lodged.

Based on the description provided to the police, ranks went to the home of the suspect and arrested him. Upon his arrest, a small quantity of cannabis was found in his possession.

“Govt is engaged in people smuggling” – Jagdeo alleges

24

Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo has accused the Government of being engaged in alleged “people smuggling”, citing the recent case where several Haitian nationals were caught entering Guyana illegally and using this country as

Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo

an in-transit hub to travel to French Guiana.

“We heard that they are registered here, but even if they are not, we believe that this Government is engaged in people smuggling. People come in, they get Government service and special help to go into French Guiana, illegally,” Jagdeo alleged while addressing a political meeting on Sunday.

Making a department an entire ministry to deal specifically with births and deaths (the Citizenship Ministry) is something that Jagdeo said has caught his attention. “We are watching it carefully because we have heard about the issuance of false birth certificates,” he asserted.

Jagdeo claimed if 10,000 false birth certificates were issued, which have the possibility of being used in the registration process, “then they (Government) can

even thwart the will at election time”.

“And we know not to trust these people, because they’ve done it before. They’ve been riggers before. So, we are keeping our eyes wide open,” the former Guyanese Head of State alleged, while referring to the People’s National Congress (PNC), the lead party in the coalition Government.

Jagdeo said Guyanese could not afford to become complacent, but must remain vigilant. “The day we close our eyes, we will wake up one morning and find that in this country, you won’t have rights anymore. And so it goes beyond sugar and the economic hardships, it’s also about what kind of country we want to live in, in the future. It is about what kind of country we want to raise our children in.”

In early June, it was revealed that several Haitians, both adults and children, were sent back to Haiti after it was suspected by the Police that they were reportedly part of a human smuggling ring.

Citizenship Minister Winston Felix had declined to give further details about the probe, but said the Police acted on the outcome of the investigation and upon the advice of its legal adviser.

Felix had disclosed that not only were discrepancies found with the Haitians’ documents, but “a collection of circumstances” were found which led to a decision to send them back. He did not rule out trafficking, saying that “it might be lurking in the horizon”.

Meanwhile, Police Commissioner Seelall Persaud had disclosed that the probe had found that some of the Haitians were entering Guyana to travel to other destinations. He disclosed that the investigation found that they were doing this for organised reasons.

Officials in neighbouring Suriname have claimed that many Haitians have been travelling there by plane on their way to French Guiana, but they could not convince immigration authorities of their onward journey.

Back in September 2016, at least 12 Haitian men were caught in Linden heading to neighbouring Brazil.

â€ĶMajor raids at Lusignan, Timehri, New Amsterdam prisons

â€Ķover 40 improvised weapons, 20 cellphones, 3 tattoo machines, 28 packs of cigarettes, 33 lighters, drugs seized

By Shemuel Fanfair

Three workers attached to a waste disposal service were on Thursday arrested for attempting to smuggle contraband inside the Lusignan Prison, despite repeated efforts of the Guyana Prison Service (GPS) to rid its facilities of prohibited items. Guyana Times understands that the disposal company was contracted to conduct operations inside the East Coast Demerara facility.

The three suspects were detained on Thursday morning

Director of Prisons, Gladwin Samuels, in making public this development, noted that the perpetrators were nabbed during the morning hours. A search on the vehicle conducted by prison officials before it entered the “Old Compound” at the Lusignan Prison unearthed prohibited items, which included in excess of 860 grams of cannabis and two cartons of cigarettes.
Concealed in a haversack, the items were tightly wrapped in black plastic bags, clear plastic and masking tape.
The driver of the truck has been identified as a 25-year-old male from Middle Walk, Buxton, ECD, while the truck attendants have been described as a 26-year-old male from Russell Street Charlestown, Georgetown and a 32-year-old female from the “C” Field Reserve in Sophia.

Contraband items discovered at Lusigan on Thursday morning

Detained, the suspected smugglers will be processed for court shortly.
Mr Samuels also disclosed that Police were investigating the presence of 11 mobile phones, 21 improvised weapons, three tattoo machines, 28 packs of cigarettes, and quantities of drugs discovered at the prisons in Timehri and New Amsterdam.
Meanwhile, a Thursday 15:00h search at the previously sanitised new holding area at Lusignan has unearthed more than 28 improvised weapons, nine lighters, nine mobile phones, two spoons and an earphone, among other items.
And Police, in a release on Thursday, informed that a search conducted in the cell of a convicted prisoner on Wednesday afternoon unearthed some 180 grams of cannabis.

Contraband items at the new holding area in Lusignan. Prisoners were sanitised before being transferred there

An almost three-hour search was also carried out by ranks of the Joint Services on Thursday, and several contraband items were discovered. Among the prohibited items were 8 lighters, 7 smoking utensils, 16 improvised weapons, 8 packs of cigarettes, three mobile phones, five phone chargers, a tattoo machine, 2 dining forks, 2 pairs of scissors, a bottle of pepper sauce, a quantity of tobacco, and 305 grams of cannabis.

New Amsterdam Prison
Information surfacing late on Thursday has indicated that a three and a half hour search was conducted by Joint Services ranks at the New Amsterdam Prison, and eight mobile phones, three phone batteries, one mobile phone display, five phone chargers, three earphones, sixteen cigarette lighters, two tattoo machines, five improvised weapons, twenty packs of cigarettes and three grams of cannabis were unearthed.
The smuggling of contraband items has been plaguing the nation’s prisons for a number of years, and to such an extent that inmates using their mobile phones would post comments and stream online videos on social media whilst being incarcerated.
Following the July 9 Camp Street riot and prison fire, the inmates had reportedly been sanitised before being transferred to the Lusignan Prison. However, videos of prisoners using weapons to slaughter an animal and carve its meat on a pasture at the ECD facility had surfaced online.
In late July, the Prisons Director had announced that prisoners transferred from the walled area to a tarmacked space at Lusignan were once again sanitised. Further sanitisation exercises were conducted when inmates were re-transferred to the renovated brick prison at Camp Street, Georgetown.
In 2016, Samuels, then Deputy Director of Prisons, had categorised contraband as a “multi-million-dollar business” from within the prison system. He had in fact reasoned that because of his stance against the illegal trade, inmates harboured disdain towards him.
“The record is there to show that I would have removed pounds of marijuana during raids, and thousands of packs of cigarettes were foundâ€Ķif you do the mathematics based on the resale value in prison, those prisoners would have lost a significant amount of cash, and all those are reasons why they would not like a person like me around,” the then Deputy Director of Prisons expressed last year.
But as time passed, with several raids and numerous extractions later, the contraband issue remains prevalent. Some of the items normally discovered at such raids include phones, improvised weapons, prisoner-made alcoholic beverages, marijuana, and other illicit drugs.
The Commission of Inquiry into the riots and prison fire had heard that pepper sauces were mixed with other fluids to be used as weapons.
At a press briefing at the Ministry of Public Security late last month, Samuels did not denounce or rule out the suggestion that prison officers could be collaborating with inmates to smuggle the items inside the facilities. He had explained that many inmates, even some classified as “real men,” had been found with the prohibited items inserted inside of their rectums in a method called “pouching”. In fact, one of the seized contraband items found in Thursday’s search at Lusignan was oval-shaped, which led to the assertion that it could have been eventually hidden on a body by this method.

Bandits storm second E-Networks store
August 4, 20176
â€Ķ robbery attacks targeted – police suggests

Personnel in two Police administrative divisions are investigating separate robberies of E-Networks stores that occurred mere hours apart, and are said to be probing the possibly that the attacks on the two stores have been targeted operations.
On Thursday, the E-Networks store at Cornelia Ida (CI), West Coast Demerara was attacked and robbed; whereas, on Wednesday — just the day before – its counterpart at the Mon Repos Mall on the East Coast of Demerara was attacked and robbed.
Guyana Times understands that, despite occurring several miles apart, the two robberies were executed in similar fashion.
According to a police release, at about 11:45h on Thursday, two males with handguns entered the E-Networks store at CI and robbed two cashiers and seven customers of their valuables before fleeing in a waiting motorcar. The victims were ordered to lie on the floor and were bound with plastic handcuffs.
Up to press time, no suspect was arrested for the crimes, but a manhunt to nab the bandits is ongoing.
Thursday’s robbery at CI is the second attack on the company in as many days; as, on Wednesday, at about 15:00h, two bandits had entered the E-Networks Store housed in the lower flat of the Mon Repos Mall and had forced 3 customers and 2 staff members to lie on the ground before stealing their cash, mobile phones and other values, including i-pads and the store’s sales for the day.
Police had disclosed that one of the bandits in this robbery was armed with a gun, but no one was injured as the bandits fled in a waiting motorcar, similar to what had occurred in the West Coast Demerara attack.

Murder accused shot dead after starting unrest at Timehri Prison

–  reportedly tried to escape, ignored repeated warnings to halt

A 24-year-old remand prisoner was shot dead at around 17.00 hrs yesterday, shortly after instigating a violent clash between himself and other inmates at the Timehri penitentiary.

Deputy Director of Prisons Gladwin Samuels

Winston Hinds, called “Town Man,” of Blue Berry Hill, Wismar, was shot in the stomach by a prison officer. He was pronounced dead at the East Bank Demerara Regional Hospital.

Deputy Director of Prisons Gladwin Samuels told Kaieteur News that based on information he received, Hinds and another prison had started a ruckus between other inmates in one of the dormitories. They were then transferred to another dormitory, where they began to break up beds and assault other inmates. He said that some of the prisoners had to receive medical treatment.

Kaieteur News was told that shortly after, Hinds darted past a prison officer and “in a split second” fled into the compound. It was there that he was shot.

Samuels said that the rank who shot Hinds “is assisting the police with their investigations.”

A Department of Public Information (DPI) release stated that the murder accused had repeatedly ignored all warnings issued by prison officers.

According to the release, several prisoners, who were armed with improvised weapons, were involved in “a serious physical altercation.”

“Prison officers attempted to restore order by breaking up the violent fracas. During this process, Hinds fled into the prison yard in an attempted bid to escape. Clear and repeated efforts were issued for Hinds to desist, but he refused in every instance and continued running,” the release added.

“Prison officers were left with no option but to curtail his escape bid. This necessitated the use of live rounds as a last resort, after every option had failed.

“Hinds was struck by a single round and was taken to the East Bank Demerara Hospital Complex, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. “

The release stated that the slain prisoner’s next of kin was informed and the police are conducting an investigation.

“The Guyana Prison Service deeply regrets the loss of Mr. Hinds’ life and extends deepest condolences to his family, relatives and friends. The GPS will also reiterate its internal calls for all prisoners to conduct themselves responsibly, to resist any temptation to escape from lawful custody, to obey the instructions of prison officers at all times, and to serve their sentences as mandated by the courts, until such time as they are eligible for release.”

Hinds, previously charged with five counts of armed robbery, was remanded in January 2016, for the February 2015 killing of Richard Remington, 43, at Cholmondeley Hill, Wismar.

Remington’s decomposing remains were found in a clump of bushes along a track in the vicinity of Matthews Lane in the Christianburg/Cholmondeley Hill area on February 12, last year. He had been shot three times, including once to the head.

The fatal shooting was the continuation of several weeks of violence at the country’s prisons.

The unrest began with the July 9 destruction by fire of most of the Georgetown Prison, the killing of prison officer Odinga Wickham, the wounding of his colleague, Hubert Trim, and the escape of eight dangerous inmates.

This was followed by the escape of 13 prisoners from the Lusignan Prison.

Last Saturday, security ranks at Lusignan were forced to shoot several prisoners with pellets and rubber bullets after coming under attack.

Joint Services raids have unearthed several prohibited items at Lusignan, New Amsterdam and Timehri Prisons.

On Thursday, security personnel seized some 180 to 183 grammes of marijuana that was being smuggled into the prison in meals sent to an inmate.

A Prison Officer, with some 20 years’ service, was implicated in the find, and remains in custody.

Marijuana is said to be a highly valued commodity in the prisons, reportedly selling for as much as three times its street value.

Also, between 09:40 and 12:30hrs, ranks of the Joint Services found eight lighters, seven smoking utensils, 16 improvised weapons, eight packs of cigarettes, two dining forks, two pairs of scissors, five cell phone chargers, a bottle of pepper sauce, three cellular phones, a tattoo machine, a quantity of tobacco and 305 grammes of cannabis at the Timehri Prison.

Also on Thursday, security personnel thwarted attempts by a Cevons Waste Management employee, to smuggle over 860 grammes of cannabis and two cartons of cigarettes into the Lusignan Prison.

Some 24 grams of cannabis were also allegedly found in the pocket of one of the Cevons employees. He was sentenced to three years in jail yesterday.

That same day, police and prison ranks found several improvised weapons at the Lusignan holding area.

Between 10.30 hrs to 13.30 hrs yesterday, a snap prison search in two dorms, two landings cells at the New Amsterdam Prisons unearthed eight cellular phones, three cell phone batteries, three ear phones and  a cell phone display, five cell phone chargers, 16 cigarette lighters, two tattoo machines, five improvised weapons, 20 packs of cigarettes and three grammes of cannabis.

Police on the Essequibo Coast have launched an investigation into the burglary of the home of a 64-year-old female pensioner.
The residence of Evra Nedd, located at lot 2 Richmond Housing Scheme, was broken into by an unarmed individual. The woman is traumatized by the intrusion.
Investigations have so far revealed that the suspect gained entry to Nedd’s home, while she was out, through a window in a room at the back of the house. It is believed that the suspect concealed himself in the woman’s home and waited for her to return. The woman, who is usually accompanied home by her friend, was unfortunately alone on the night of the incident.
Hours prior, Nedd had left her home to attend a wake in the neighborhood. She returned home at around 9pm, and says she had a feeling that something was odd.
“I came in and put on the lamp because there was blackout. But it gotta be that he was in the house already. Probably he hide in the wardrobe in the back room. Nedd said she got confused and tried to keep calm as much as possible. “I didn’t risk to fight back because I am not seeing well in one of my eyes,” the woman said.
Nedd said that the ordeal lasted approximately 15 minutes.
“I saw the person, because by then the current come on back and the light in the kitchen was on. When he jumped on the bed, I feel he hair and it soft and straight. Then in the light I saw that he had on a three-quarter black pants, but he pull the white vest he had on over he face, so I couldn’t make out his face clearly.”
Nedd said that the suspect grabbed her by the throat and took her outside while he searched the home for cash. “He tumble up the bed and find sixty thousand dollars under the mattress. That was the money for my bills and other medical expenses. He then go and tumble up all the drawers,”
Upon finding the money, the suspect made his escape through the kitchen door.
Meanwhile, the woman’s relatives are claiming that the Police took six hours to respond to the scene – just a stone’s throw away from the Anna Regina Station. Yesterday’s burglary marked the fifth experienced by the woman in her home. Though it’s the first after an extensive period, Nedd believes that “they would be back”.

The suspect, identified as Dwayne Tappin a former Guyana Defence Force (GDF) rank, turned himself in to ranks at the Sparendaam Police Station, some hours after killing his uncle, Randolph Seenauth, 51.
Seenauth’s headless body was found in the wooden cottage where he resided.

He said that at around 04:30hrs neighbours heard a loud commotion coming from one of the apartments but there was silence for a few minutes which led them to suspect something was amiss.
Neighbours called out for Seenauth but got no response and later contacted the Sparendaam Police Station, the Commander disclosed. Police ranks arrived shortly after and upon pushing the front door to Seenauth’s apartment, found his head lying in a passageway between the living room and kitchen. Further checks were made in the apartment and the rest of the man’s body was discovered on a mattress in the bedroom. She said that her sister, who is Tappin’s mother, lived on the land for several years before building her home at Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara.
After her sister moved out, Kowlessar said the woman’s daughter lived there with her partner who also was in the habit of beating Seenauth, an epileptic. She said that the situation became overbearing and she served her niece with a lawyer’s letter and she eventually moved out.

ALLEGED KILLER: Dwayne Tappin

“They does beat he (Seenauth). You know how much time I make report to the station. They beat he a time and tear off his clothes and I took him at the station. They burst his head allâ€Ķ”
“But still they does come here. The mother does come here. So I take them to the High Court for this property. They are not supposed to come here. Every time I fence this yard and put on lock on the gate (Tappin) would come and jump the fence and go in the yard and beat by brother.”
She disclosed that her nephew sleeps in the house at nights.
Kowlessar recounted that relatives dealt her brother a sound thrashing at a shop just opposite his home. She said that a relative of Tappin’s had told her, “people does pay $20,000 to kill yuh and that he gon’ pay $20,000 to kill me so that I cannot have this property.”
The woman stated that she has made numerous reports to the police about the death threats.
Kowlessar stated that in an effort to avoid problems with her relatives she avoids going near the disputed land. She added that she provided her brother with food and money and would beg persons in the village to keep an eye on him.
She said that up to last Friday her sister visited the premises with her daughter.
“They break the door and go in the house.”
Kowlessar revealed that her nephew was picked up by police in relation to reports of rape committed on a child. She said that her sister had accused her brother of calling the police.
Meanwhile, another sister of Seenauth is refuting claims that Tappin killed him.
She said that their sister is trying to frame Tappin for the murder.
When questioned as to who chopped off Seenauth’s head, the woman said, “Nobody ain’t know. Anybody see? They got nuff enemies around here. It cannot be him (Tappin).”

The police are investigating an armed robbery committed on a photographer Sunday morning just off Vlissengen Road, Georgetown.
Dwayne Hackett, a University of Guyana student, was returning home from his routine morning walk when a lone gunman, on a bicycle, robbed him of $2,200.
Speaking with Kaieteur News yesterday, Hackett said that as he was walking, he noticed a man on bicycle coming in the opposite direction and then stopped.
At first glance, the photographer thought that the man had stopped to urinate based on his posture but as he continued walking, he found it strange that someone would want to urinate on a parked car—that too in public.
Little did he know, it was a gun that the cyclist was pulling out from his pocket. Just as Hackett was about to pass the man, he said that the individual turned to him and pointed the weapon at him as he demanded his valuables.
“I heard when he cocked the gun,” the victim said. He then added that he went into his pocket and took out his cash and handed it over to the gunman. The victim had walked with the money to purchase coffee and several other items on his way home.
The gunman collected the cash and according to Hackett, he (Hackett) quickly walked away and did not turn back to see which direction the perpetrator went.
He further noted that when he reached a couple of miles from where he had been robbed, he saw a policeman and approached him for some assistance but was informed that he needed to visit the police station since the rank was there for the presidential entourage heading for the Botanical Gardens.
Hackett said that he continued on his way home, attended church and subsequently made a police report in the afternoon.
Kaieteur News was informed that there are surveillance cameras in the area where Hackett was robbed and the police will be reviewing the footage. Reports also surfaced that the suspect has robbed other persons before in that same area.

Thieves caught on surveillance after robbing boutique

Two men, believed to be in their fifties, were captured on surveillance camera just after robbing a Boutique at Saffon and Sussex Streets, Charlestown, Georgetown around 08:00 hrs on Sunday.
The men made off with more than $130,000 in boots and clothing from Lady B’s Fashion owned by Barbara Nedd.
On the footage, they were seen stopping traffic to cross over to Sussex Street and continued walking east towards Lombard Street—this was two minutes after each other. The stolen items were packed in big bags.
One of the thieves has dreadlocks, gray beard, wore a camouflage hat, and faded blue pants and orange jersey with white lining. He had a one strap bag across his back with a large black bag in his left hand.
His accomplice, the one who first left the boutique, wore a pair of blue long pants, grey and white hat, blue pants and jersey. He had one bag slung across his back and another one in his hand as he was seen hurriedly stopping a car to cross the busy road.
Recalling what transpired, Nedd said that she was in her boutique, arranging stocks when the two men entered and immediately fell in love with a few boots she had for sale.
“They ask how much and I say $10,000 and they were like ‘so cheap?’ and the one with the gray beard asked me if I gon give he a discount if he buys all,” Nedd related.
She said that she looked at the “gray beard man” and asked if he could afford to purchase all the boots to which he answered in the affirmative.

The “gray beard bandit” walking away with Nedd’s stocks

The first thief who left the scene

“He said, ‘Lady, I is somebody that got business in Bartica, and Bartica is not like town, is sheer gold people there, and is plenty more things I come to buy once I like it’ so right away I start taking down clothes to show him,” Nedd related.
The woman said that at no point did she think she was falling into a trap, since the men were “old” and she thought that there was no way they were going to rob her.
According to Nedd, the “gray beard” bandit was “supposedly” the businessman, while his accomplice was his worker.
She said that while she was inside the boutique attending to the “gray beard” bandit, his accomplice was outside, packing her stocks into bags.

“The one inside made me think he buying big, so I taking down all the brand name clothes I got and writing down on paper and I giving he bags to pack the things in,” said the woman, who has been operating at that location for more than nine years.
When the clothes became too much to be loaded into bags, the older man asked for a suitcase.
While Nedd was attending to the man, other customers entered the boutique, but she paid little attention to them since she thought, “the Bartica businessman was lottery.”

Barbara Nedd in front of her Boutique yesterday

“When I checked, it came up to $126,000 and he tell me to bring more, that he got more money,” Nedd said, without hesitation, she brought out all her brand name clothes and showed it to the man.
As she was searching for clothing, the woman said that the elderly man went to the front of the boutique and shouted, “Don’t forget the dried shrimp, we got to get it.” She is convinced this was his signal to tell his accomplice to leave.
“He come in back and ask me if I got short pants, because Bartica got regatta, so I tell he I ain’t know about that and he said yes, that I should get the pants because dem ladies gon want look sexy.”
While Nedd was searching for the pants, the suspect escaped with the items. She said that he was packing some stocks in a large bag and some in suitcases—he left the suitcase behind and made off with the bag.
When she noticed the men had escaped with her stocks, she ran to the market but failed to locate them. She subsequently made a report to the Ruimveldt Police Station.

â€Ķgets four years, $21M fine

THE grandmother of a National Under-19 cricketer was sentenced to jail on Wednesday after she pleaded guilty when the duo appeared in court on a joint charge of drug trafficking following a gas cylinder cocaine bust at the family’s Campbellville house.

Joshua Persaud and his 51-year-old grandmother Naomi Persaud had been jointly charged with drug trafficking after the discovery of over 20 pounds of cocaine in a cooking gas cylinder at the family’s home.

However, the cricketer’s grandmother pleaded guilty to the charge and was sentenced to four years imprisonment along with a $21M fine by City Magistrate Fabayo Azore.

National Under-19 cricketer, Joshua Persaud

The charge against Joshua Persaud, 17, was withdrawn since his grandmother took the rap and stated that the teen had no knowledge of the narcotics being in the house.

The matter was heard in camera (legal proceeding in private) despite the teen being the legal age for arraignment in open court. The Persauds were represented by attorney Glenn Hanoman.

According to particulars of the charge, on August 06, 2017 at Delph Avenue, Campbellville the duo had over 20 pounds of cocaine in their possession for the purpose of trafficking.
Reports stated that on August 06, 2017 ranks from the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit swooped down at the Delph Avenue, Campbellville home where Under-19 cricketer Joshua Persaud and his 17-year-old girlfriend were alone.

The home was searched and the CANU ranks seized nine rectangular-shaped objects, weighing over nine kilograms, with cocaine from inside a cooking gas cylinder which had a false bottom. The 17-year-old girlfriend was released.

Shortly after the Persauds were arraigned, a wanted bulletin was issued by CANU for businessman and former murder accused, Andre Gomes, aka “Zipper”. The wanted man reportedly rented the home where the drugs were found and is said to be in a relationship with Naomi Persaud.
Two years ago Andre Gomes was charged with the murder of 49-year-old Nigel Isaacs, who was shot to his head outside the Palm Court nightclub.
However, the case against him was withdrawn, after the Director of Public Prosecutions advised that there was not enough evidence against the man to move ahead with the murder charge.

“Troubled” businessman stabs wife to death, commits suicide

Stabbed to death: Rhonda Blair and dead businessman: Rudolph Blair

Residents of Cumberland Village, East Canje Berbice, were awoken to the shocking news of the murder of their fellow villager and popular businesswoman, Rhonda Blair.

As the news spread like wildfire across Berbice, many were still trying to come to grips with the tragic reports of the woman’s demise.

The 42-year-old retired teacher and mother of two, was stabbed to death by her 47-year-old husband Rudolph Blair called ‘Rudy’, who, after committing the act, ran to the back of a neighbour’s yard and shot himself. He is said to have also ingested a poisonous substance after fatally stabbing his wife.

The couple who owned a string of Stretch ‘D’ Dollar stores, lived at Lot 91 Coburg Street, Cumberland, East Canje. Police sources have revealed that sometime around 23:00 hrs on Thursday and 00:05 hrs on Friday at the aforementioned address, Rudolph Blair, in a fit of rage and frustration, stabbed his wife multiple times about her body.

He was believed to have been drinking prior to the incident as there were several Stag beer bottles found at the home.

The couple had originally lived together at Cumberland, but after the husband became abusive, his wife left their matrimonial home and sought refuge at a friend Jonelle Dover’s house, in Ithaca Village, West Coast Berbice.

It was between 21:00 hrs and 23:00 hrs on Thursday,  that the businesswoman’s friend, with whom she stayed, spoke with her via cellphone. She had indicated that she was at her place of business, located at Pitt Street, New Amsterdam, and that her husband, Rudolph, requested that she uplift groceries for him.

After some time had elapsed, Dover made calls to her friend’s phone that went unanswered, Dover sensed something was amiss and immediately left her Ithaca home in search of her friend. She made a check at the Rosignol Branch of the Blairs’ business and while on her way, collected the couple’s son, Anthony Blair, and proceeded to the Cumberland property.

Upon arrival at the house, they called out for the woman and her husband but got no response. They then decided to lodge a missing person report at the Reliance Police Station around 23:30 hrs.

Two policemen accompanied Dover and the Blairs’ son back to the couple’s residence. During a search of the premises, Rhonda Blair was found lying on her back in a pool of blood in the yard. She was attired in a green long-sleeved blouse and a floral skirt.

Divisional Commander, Assistant Commissioner, Paul Williams who was at the scene of the crime, disclosed that it was a joint effort with authorities and relatives of Rudolph Blair in negotiating with him to surrender to police.

“We joined together and negotiated in terms of accessing the area. So I appealed to him; likewise his sisters and his nephew decided that they were going to go ahead and try to convince him to surrender. While going, they discovered his body motionless,” Williams said.

The commander stated that they were pleading with him to come out, but he responded in the negative, “when the relatives were going to go for him, he told them, ‘don’t come, I am okay’. He kept talking for a while until his voice faded and eventually stopped,” the Commander disclosed.

Rudolph Blair was hiding in a neighbour’s yard between some bush, while the area was cordoned off by police. Residents on the scene expressed their shock at the events as they unfolded. Some persons shouted “they always had money problems” and “he shouldn’t ah do this”.

Two shots were reportedly discharged by the businessman, a gunshot wound to his lower left ear and his chest were discovered, with a licensed .32 Taurus revolver lying beside his body.

Meanwhile, a reliable source told Kaieteur News that the businessman had always been threatening to kill himself, with the most recent threat being on Sunday last.

He reportedly confided in the source that he was desirous of selling his Pitt Street business to pay off his outstanding loans that were burdensome to his family. However his wife was not in support of this, she wanted him to keep the business going, even with them being buried in debt. They were reportedly going bankrupt.

He had reportedly told the source, with his licensed revolver in hand, that, “I get a mind fuh kick Rhonda from the step to the gate and kill mehself”.

The source stated that he tried to convince the troubled man that this was not the way to go. He said that Blair seemed normal throughout the week.

Meanwhile, both bodies are currently at the New Amsterdam Hospital Mortuary. A post mortem examination was conducted on Rhonda Blair’s body by government pathologist Vivekanand Bridgmohan, and it was revealed that she died of shock and hemorrhage due to multiple stab wounds about the body. In 2013, the Blairs, after moving from “rags to riches,” opened a $83M Supermarket at Pitt Street New Amsterdam. However, sometime in February 2014, hints of financial problems began to surface.

With a dwindling business, rumours circulated then, that Rudolph Blair had attempted suicide, but he quickly shut down that story, stating that he found solace with his God and would never resort to such.

Cops believe restaurant owner was strangled

Dead: Lian Jiang

The bound body of a Chinese national that was discovered in the bathroom area of the Paradise Chinese Restaurant at Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo, on Thursday night, has been identified as 44-year-old Lian Jiang, a father of two.
Jiang’s body was found in the lower flat of the building where he operated a restaurant. He resided in the upper flat.
Investigators suspect that Jiang, who had been running the restaurant by himself, was killed sometime Wednesday night or in the wee hours of Thursday. His remains were only found around 22:00 hrs on Thursday. His mouth was gagged, his hands were tied behind his back with a phone charger and his feet were also tied.
No blood was found at the scene, but there were marks of violence on the victim’s body. His right cheek was swollen. The entire house was ransacked.
Kaieteur News was informed that the bandits gained entry into the restaurant by removing louvre panes from a bathroom window and then breaking the grill.
It is suspected that the men left through the same window, since a chair was found nearby, indicating that they used it to climb out. While the main door to the restaurant was found ajar, the cops believe that the victim might have been selling late.
“If they had escaped through that door then someone might have seen them, so we believe that they went just as they came (entered) because neighbours cannot see that section,” a police rank said yesterday, while adding that they have not determined what the men escaped with as yet.
This newspaper was informed that the restaurant does not have cameras, but an adjacent premises has a surveillance system. “We are hoping that we get something because the way the camera is positioned, it might be a little challenging,” the rank said.
The victim’s wife, who runs another restaurant at Soesdyke, told the police that she last spoke with her husband around 22:00 hrs on Wednesday. When she did not hear from him on Thursday, she called his phone but it went to voicemail.
The woman then asked a male friend in the area to check on him. When the individual went, he called several times but did not get a response. Upon entering the building, the young man noticed the restaurant door was partly open and immediately went to the Tuschen Outpost, from where he was accompanied by ranks.
When they entered the building, the cops noticed the place was ransacked and shortly after, they found the body. No one has been arrested as yet.

The robbers, and their driver, escaped with the couple’s silver-grey Toyota Premio, PRR 2124, as well as Pastor Skinner’s handbag and cash, which included some of the church offerings. The car also contained some items that the couple had bought at Stabroek Market before heading home.

Aircraft seized at another illegal airstrip in Rupununi

7

Almost two weeks after an illegal airstrip was discovered at Santa Fe North Rupununi, Region Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo); the Police on Sunday evening intercepted an illegal aircraft minutes after it landed.
Prior to the discovery of the aircraft, members of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) have been monitoring events after a foreign aircraft was seen frequenting the Santa Fe area.
However, on Sunday evening, Police ranks went to the area and conducted a search during which over a dozen 10-gallon jars were found hidden in the bushes.
The party also observed that a long strip of land measuring one mile in length and about 50 feet in width was cleared. In addition, as the team was leaving the area, it observed an aircraft circling and immediately went back to the location.
There, they saw three men running from the landed aircraft. While the men escaped, the aircraft was secured by the Police.
Sometime later, F Division (Interior locations) Commander, Ravindradat Budhram arrived at the location and a search was conducted on the aircraft. The search unearthed a quantity of dry ration, medical supplies, gents clothing and footwear, two hand-held radios, flashlights, cellular phones and an identification card amongst other items.
The Guyana Civil Aviation Authority has been notified and a team was deployed to the area to conduct further investigations. Just two weeks ago, an illegal airstrip was unearthed about five kilometres West of Santa Fe, Rupununi, Region Nine, by members of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) who were patrolling the area.
The ranks were conducting a reconnaissance mission when they stumbled upon the seeming newly built airstrip. Following a closer inspection of the perimeter of the airstrip, several dug out trenches were found. They were covered with black plastic and dried branches.
Upon removing the plastic and branches, several items were found concealed in the holes including a chainsaw and fuel drums. In addition, a ž drum of aviation fuel was also found at the site.
At least 12 abandoned camps were also found in close proximity of the airstrip. These camps were reportedly used by farmers over a period of time.
In September 2016, a Joint Services patrol discovered an illegal aircraft hidden just off of the Yupukari Airstrip, Rupununi with United States registration N-767-Z.
Subsequently, a team of investigators from the GDF, GPF, Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit and the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority was deployed from Georgetown to the area to conduct investigations and were able to determine that the registration number was bogus.
Moreover, investigators had discovered during interviews with nearby residents that the aircraft had been sighted circling the area on numerous occasions in the past.
Additionally, a number of residents shared information they deemed as “suspicious activity”, including the presence of motorcycles or ATVs frequenting the area at midnight.
It was reported that a leak was discovered in the fuel tank of the aircraft. This, investigators believe, may have caused the aircraft to land in Guyana.
However, it has been reported that one of the local law enforcement agencies was aware of the aircraft at least three weeks before the disclosure was made. It was reported that the security officials were monitoring the aircraft to see if anyone would return to salvage it.
Meanwhile, President David Granger has established a one-man Commission of Inquiry (CoI) to probe the discovery of the illegal aircraft and appointed retired Brigadier Edward Collins to investigate, examine, advice and report on all aspects under which the foreign aircraft had entered the country.
During the CoI, public meetings were held in several villages including Katoka, Kaicumbay, Yupukari and other villages. The CoI proved that the aircraft entered Guyana illegally.
The illegal twin-engine Cessna aircraft was subsequently flown from Yupukari to Lethem initially, before it was flown to the Cheddi Jagan International Airport where it remains to date. (Bhisham Mohamed)

12-yr-old raped by taxi driver in Linden

THE Linden police are continuing their search for a taxi driver who allegedly raped a 12-year-old girl on Saturday night.

The child was a passenger of the taxi driver. According to E’ Division Commander, Senior Superintendent, Fazil Karimbaksh, the incident allegedly took place at approximately 22:30 hrs at the Kara Kara ‘Back Road’, a few minutes after the victim and her three friends joined the car to be taken to Amelia’s Ward.

The teen was taken a police station and then to the Mackenzie Hospital where a medical examination was done which proved that she was raped. The alleged rapist, the commander said, has since been eluding the police who have been searching for him.
A relative of the girl told this newspaper that she had earlier attended a church function in Georgetown with her friends, and was at the time coming home when the driver, with whom she is familiar, refused to stop for her friends who told him where they were coming off.

After they realised something was amiss, the three friends forcefully exited the car but she was unlucky, since she was in the front seat and was strapped down with the seat beat. “After we hear what happen, we start searching all over the Ward for her, we even went back to the friends’ house because we thought she went hiding somewhere and while searching we see she walking coming up the hill in blood, could barely walk,” the relative said.

The girl then revealed to them that the driver had allegedly taken her back to Kara Kara, where he threw her in the back seat and raped her. “We took her to police station and a female police took her to the hospital and it show she was raped, all her underwear had blood, all she skin black and blue and bruise up,” the relative related.

They also alleged that the driver is a known serial rapist who had committed similar acts in the past. The teen continues to receive counselling. Relatives have commended the police for the work they have done so far and are encouraging young girls to be extra careful when travelling at nights in short-drop cars.

Venezuelan soldiers rob Guyanese

Guyanese soldiers confront their Venezuelan counterparts at the Amacuro River border last Friday

â€Ķsay had no food supplies in 45 days
â€Ķissue apology to Joint Services

RESIDENTS of White Water Village, an Indigenous community close to the Venezuela border, are calling on the authorities to establish a police outpost in the area following a robbery committed by a group of Spanish-speaking soldiers last week.

The incident occurred during the day last Wednesday within the North West District village lands, located within two miles of the Amacuro River which separates Guyana from neighbouring Venezuela. Toshao of White Water, Cleveland De Souza, told the Guyana Chronicle that the incident occurred at the Kurasima Creek, a busy spot within the village where persons usually trade items. Kurasima Creek is a tributary of the Amacuro River.

Following the incident, a team of Joint Services ranks who are stationed at Mabaruma, Region One’s only town and administrative capital, travelled to the border and confronted the Venezuelans. The Spanish soldiers told their Guyana counterparts that they were hungry and that no food was supplied to them for 45 days. They then issued an apology to the Joint Services.

De Souza said that prior to Wednesday’s incident, he had received reports that the Venezuelan soldiers were at two locations along the border harassing Guyanese Indigenous Warraus. He explained that each Sunday, the Heart of Palm packaging company , AmCar, which is based in Region One (Barima-Waini) , would send an agent to White Water at an area called “Gajah Landing“ to purchase the palm product known as “cabbage” from the Warraus. He said that the Indigenous group would travel to the area and sell their products to the AmCar agent.

He noted that the village council had received reports that one Sunday in July, the Venezuelan soldiers had ventured up a creek inland to White Water and took away food stuff which the indigenous traders had bought with the proceeds of their Heart of Palm trade. “  â€They stopped the people and took away their things, while armed,” he said.
The armed soldiers repeated the act last Wednesday and De Souza said the police at the Mabaruma Police Station were notified.

The Officer-in-Charge, along with several police ranks and a team of soldiers from Camp Everad near Mabaruma , travelled into White Water on Friday, two days after the incident.

Accompanied by the villagers, the team ventured into the creek where the incident had occurred. Reports are that the team then headed farther to the Amacuro River and spoke with the Venezuelan military ranks stationed there.
“They made the excuse that they were hungry and had no food,” De Souza said, noting that the incident has left the village in fear. Following the incident, the Joint Services ranks camped out at White Water over the weekend and returned to Mabaruma on Monday.

A resident of the village noted that persons are fearful, especially at nights. She said that the border is within walking distance of the village and businessmen are concerned that elements from Venezuela would attack the village at any given moment. “They call them sindicatos (bandits) and we know how the situation is over in Venezuela,” De Souza said.
Reports are that two armed men were spotted in the village at a shop one night last week and residents quickly closed their doors.

The men in the village scoured the area for the men but came up empty –handed. In recent months, scores of persons who migrated to Venezuela in the past, have been returning to the North West District, some of whom have set up small businesses in the region. Venezuela’s economy has been in turmoil over the past three years. Tensions are high in Caracas as pro-government and opposition supporters of President Nicolas Maduro clash over the state of the Bolivarian Republic’s economy.

According to an Al Jazeera report published in May this year, Venezuela is experiencing the worst economic crisis in its history, with an inflation rate of over 400 percent and a volatile exchange rate. According to International Monetary Fund (IMF) figures, in 2016, the country had a negative growth rate of minus eight percent, an inflation rate of 481 per cent, and an unemployment rate of 17 percent that is expected to climb to 20 percent this year.

Over the past decade, it has been the region’s poorest performer in terms of growth of GDP per capita, even though the country sits on the world’s largest oil reserves. Oil prices have been falling since 2014, which has left the economic system unable to maintain the system of subsidies and price controls that functioned during the oil boom years.

Malaysian businessman trailed from bank, robbed in cafÃĐ

Gunmen yesterday trailed a Malaysian businessman from a city bank to a cafÃĐ on Church Street, Georgetown where they robbed him of over one million Guyana dollars.

A detective (backing camera) taking a statement from the Malaysian businessman yesterday.

The unmasked men robbed about seven other customers who were in the Coffee
Bean restaurant when they pounced on the businessman and his driver at around 11:32 hrs.

According to information received, the businessman, accompanied by his driver, went to a city bank to make a withdrawal. They then went for lunch at the cafÃĐ.

Manager of the cafÃĐ, Narvini Dewnath said that the two customers entered the fast food outlet and shortly after, two gunmen stormed in. They were wearing baseball caps to conceal their identity.

Kaieteur News was informed that while one of the men “harassed” the businessman’s driver and kept asking where the money was, the second gunman collected the other customers’ valuables.

They then took the businessman and his driver to their vehicle that was parked in front of the restaurant where they collected the cash and made good their escape.

Dewnath said that the gunmen’s target was clearly the businessman, who is a regular customer at the cafÃĐ.

“We have an electronic door that opens from inside, but at the time of the robbery it wasn’t workingâ€Ķ we have gotten that fixed,” the woman noted, while adding that her restaurant was not robbed.

When this publication visited the cafÃĐ yesterday, the businessman and his driver were giving their statements to investigators. The businessman objected to speak to the media.

He reportedly told the police that while on his way from the bank, he was very careful and did not notice anyone following him. No one was injured during the attack.

The robbery was recorded on surveillance cameras and the footage has been handed over to investigators.

More weapons, cell phones found in Camp St. Prison

Some of the items found in the prison

Less than a month after a number of inmates were transferred back to the Camp Street Prison, some of them have managed to get their hands on contraband.
Director of Prisons, Gladwin Samuel said that between 06:15 and 08:45 hrs yesterday, a joint operation was carried out on the entire brick building in the Camp Street compound where a small portion of cannabis, three cell phones with SIM cards, four lighters, 20 improvised weapons and three razor blazes were found.
Getting information on how the inmates have gotten their hands on the contrabands has always been a challenge for authorities, but it is suspected that rogue prison warders and the relatives of those in prison have smuggled them into the jail.
The search on the facility comes after the July 09, prison break which resulted in 90 percent of the jail being burnt to the ground.
Just around 17: 00hrs inmates set fires at several sections of the prison to distract the authorities as Lusignan killer, Mark Royden Durant, ex-cop Uree Varswyck, Stafrei Alexander Hopkinson and Desmond James escaped.
James and Hopkinson have since been nabbed.
Prison surveillance camera footage showed Durant; Varswyck; Alexander; James; another Bartica and Lusignan Massacre killer, Dennis Williams called “Anaconda” and Shawn Collins exiting the facility and making their way towards Bent Street, Georgetown while opening fire on the TSU ranks outside.
The inmates were armed with two guns and cutlasses. The CCTV footage subsequently showed Williams running back into the prison compound while looking out for the prison guards—it was later revealed that the escapees had already gotten into a car and left him behind.
Collins was captured a few hours later on Hadfield Street, Georgetown.
And on July 24, 13 prisoners crawled to freedom through a tunnel they had gun in a latrine in the Lusignan holding facility. The Lusignan Prison escapees went wild, with some of them visiting their homes and others expressing, via Facebook, their joy at being free. But for many, that freedom was short lived. Twelve of those inmates have since been captured.
The Guyana Police Force (GPF) recently offered a $10M reward for the arrest of those who are still at large. They include Durant, Varswyck, Paul Goriah and Cobena Stephens.

By Ashraf Dabie

The reputed husband of a mother of five was taken into Police custody following the death of the woman whose body was found on the East Coast of Demerara on Wednesday evening with numerous injuries about her body.
The dead woman has been identified as 38-year-old Janice Edwards, of lot 121, C Field, Sophia, Greater Georgetown, while her lover was named as King Gerrad.
According to reports reaching Guyana Times, the mother of five and her reputed husband were on Wednesday evening proceeding along the UG Access Road, on motorcycle CJ 1830, when the light of an oncoming vehicle forced the man to swerve further, resulting in the motorcycle collided with a pile of mud.
As a result of the impact, Edwards was flung off the cycle and sustained severe injuries about her body.
The woman was picked up with multiple injuries and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
This publication on Thursday visited the residence of the couple, during which her mother-in-law, Ann Garnette, relayed her understanding of Edward’s demise.
Outlining a partially conflicting report from that which was published by the Guyana Police Force, Garnette noted that, “Right through of UG road full of hard mud, and he going and I just hear a message that a car hit he, hit the back of the bike and pitch he off and the two of them lying down on the road.”
The mother-in-law further relayed, “Some pick-up (vehicle) then rush she to the hospital cause like he (husband) halla for help.”
Continuing on the accident, a family friend of the couple who identified himself as “Buck”, indicated that he was informed of the incident shortly after the duo had left home, early Wednesday evening.
Moreover, Buck pointed out what took place after he had rushed to the scene, but indicated that there were no signs of the reputed husband, King Gerrad, when he arrived at scene on the UG road.
“By time I left here to go on the scene, it was nothing; no bike, I didn’t see he, I didn’t see she. But I left to come home back and after we reach was made to understand she was at the hospital.”
The close acquaintance went on to say, “When we left and go to the hospital, the doctor tell me that there is nothing they could’ve done; before she reach the hospital she done dead already.”
Meanwhile, this publication understands that the reputed husband of the now dead woman had fled the scene of the accident and was only discovered after he showed up at the hospital on Thursday morning.
This was after Police had ransacked the house of the couple, in search of the then missing man. However, the family members are refuting all claims that foul play was involved.
“Because he move off from the scene, people got it looking like it’s a murder but I don’t want people feel it’s a murder,” one close relative declared.
The relative justified his statement by positing, “I just assuming based on what people told me and how I go and see the scene that after the accident, he attend to her and realise it was no life so he just panic and he move off the scene.”
With that, the relatives of the couple held out that the two had no ongoing disputes and are known to resolve their disputes in a civil manner.
Of the five children mothered by Edwards, the duo shared five-year-old twins, while the remaining three were prior to their relationship.
The couple had been residing at their Sophia home for about 9 years, at which they operate a vending establishment.
Despite the family’s efforts to erase any thought of murder, Gerrad has been implicated in the death of his longstanding lover and mother of his children.
As such he was taken into Police custody where he remains as investigations into the matter continue

The incident occurred sometime around 14:15h on Thursday. The injured man has been identified as Anthony Rogers, 26, of Bartica, Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni).
Based on reports received, businessman Lloyd Thomas, the owner of Blue Mountain Night Spot at Grant Sand Road, Soesdyke, is claiming that he had just returned home and exited his vehicle to open the gate so that he could drive his vehicle into the yard, when an armed man confronted him.

Bandits struck for the second time yesterday at a Guyana Power and Light (GPL) Customer Service Station, this time escaping with the days’ revenue, a firearm, and valuables from staff and customers at the entity’s Parika, Essequibo branch.
Kaieteur News understands that the robbers relieved a manager of some $750,000, a further $60,000 and a mobile phone. They escaped in a white car.
According to reports, the armed security guard was at the doorway and the manager and other GPL employees were in the cashier area at around 12:25 hrs, when one of the robbers suddenly pointed a handgun at the guard, while an accomplice disarmed their victim.
After ordering the guard to lie on the floor, the robbers kicked open the door to the cashier area, pointed guns at the staffers and ordered them to “hand over everything.”
After emptying two drawers of cash, and relieving the manager of her phone, the robbers then exited and escaped by car.
A brief release from the GPL’s public relations branch stated that the “brazen act of crime” occurred after 12:00hrs.
“Three armed bandits stormed our Parika Service Centre; robbing the location of all revenues received at that time, holding our staff and customers at gun point and disarming our security personnel of a gun.
“The Guyana Police Force has since been informed of this criminal occurrence and investigations are ongoing. Today’s robbery coupled with last week’s foiled attempt at our Mon Repos Customer Service Centre is of immense concern to our Company. A robust assessment of security provisions at our locations is underway, the release added.

Sports executive beaten, robbed during home invasion

The President of the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) was on Sunday morning beaten and robbed when three gunmen broke into his Goedverwagting, East Coast Demerara home.

The injured Aubrey Hutson.

One of the gunmen gained entry into Aubrey Hutson’s Lot 24 Middle Street home via a window in the upper flat of the two storey building and once in, he opened a window in the lower flat of the property for his two accomplices.
At the end of the half-hour ordeal, the men escaped with Hutson’s jewellery, passport, cell phone, television and laptop, and even treated themselves to cookies.
They entered the man’s home around 03:30 hrs and left after tying his hands behind his back and putting him to lie on his stomach. His feet were also tied and he was gagged.
Hutson, who is the owner of Office Machines Electronics Laboratory (OMEL), said that he got home a little earlier and fell asleep while looking at the television in the lower flat of his home.
The businessman, who was alone in the building, said that he was subsequently awakened by a “cracking sound” from the stairs and when he looked, he saw a man coming down his stairway with a gun and instructing him not to move.
According to Hutson, the gunman approached him and demanded that he open the door, but before he could have done so, the (gunman) told him to open the window instead.

“When I realized that the place was silent, I got in a sitting position and untied myself and went by a neighbour.
Kaieteur News was informed that when the Hutson’s neighbour telephoned ranks at the Sparendaam Police Station, a rank informed the individual that the victim had to visit the station to make a report.

The two houses that were robbed

The family was out for the weekend when the intruders hit. When they returned on Monday morning, it was discovered that their Lot 40 Mount Sinai homes were broken into. Mount Sinai is one of the suburbs of New Amsterdam and is frequently referred to as Angoy’s Avenue.
The homes are situated in the same yard, where three houses are occupied by siblings. Devi Kowlessar told Guyana Times that she along with her husband, children and her other relatives left for a trip to the Corentyne at about 17:00h on Saturday; securing both homes before they left.
At about 9:00h on Monday, a neighbour telephoned her saying that the doors on two of the houses were opened. She said she contacted a brother who confirmed that the houses were broken into. According to Kowlessar, when they returned, they found both homes in disarray.
She explained that the bandits made off with an unused grass slashing machine valued $146,000, in excess of $400,000 worth gold jewellery, a laptop computer and a quantity of US currency from her home.
Meanwhile, her sister, Rookmin Dindyal told this publication that her daughter’s diamond wedding ring worth US$1600, along with local and foreign currency, were taken from her home.
According to Dindyal, at the time her home was broken into, she was keeping $200,000 which belongs to her church. That money, she said, was not found by the intruders.
The Police were summoned and have since dusted for fingerprints as they continue their investigations.

Thieves strip dead man of fake ‘bling’

The vandalised tomb of 26-year-old prisoner, Winston Hinds

THE tomb of 26-year-old Winston Hinds, the prisoner who was shot dead at the Timehri prison on August 4, was on Tuesday night vandalised and Hinds stripped of the fake jewellery he was buried with.

The discovery was made on Wednesday by family members, who were informed of what happened.

When they turned up at the Christianburg Cemetery, the newly constructed tomb was broken open, while Hind’s body remained in the casket. The fake gold chain and ring that he was buried in were gone.

Mother of the deceased, Vanessa Bess, told Guyana Chronicle that her son was buried with the jewellery but it was not real. The family just wanted to send him off the way he used to dress. The thieves, however, forgot the proverb, “All the glitters is not gold” and will soon find that out upon trying to sell the jewellery.

Bess said what is more heart-breaking is the Linden Mayor and Town Council (LMTC) requested $40, 000 from her to have the tomb redone.

“Sweet heart, I don’t have a cent, I don’t know where I will get $40, 000 from. I am a poor woman, I just bury my son,” the frustrated Bess explained.

Fortunately, however, upon visiting the LMTC after such a request was made, to make her plight known, a decision was made by the Council to drop the monetary request.

In addition, Bess is refuting claims made in some sections of the media that she received compensation from the Guyana Prison Authority after the death of her son.

She said that no compensation was given to her but she did receive assistance with the burial of her son. Bess is also calling for a thorough investigation to be done into the death of her son, claiming that the post-mortem findings contrtadict the explanation given by the prison authorities.

The grieving mother said she witnessed the post-mortem of her son and the findings show that he was shot to the abdomen, while the prison authorities are saying that he was shot while trying to escape.

Director of Prisons Gladwin Samuels had noted that the murder accused had repeatedly ignored all warnings issued by prison officers. Samuels said several prisoners, who were armed with improvised weapons, were involved in ‘a serious physical altercation.

Hinds was remanded to prison on January 2016, for the February 2015 killing of Richard Remington at Cholmondeley Hill, Wismar. Remington’s decomposing remains were found in a clump of bushes along a track in the vicinity of Matthew’s Lane at Christianburg, February 12 last year.

Bess, however, is professing her son’s innocence in the matter, since she claims he was not even in Linden at the time.

Lloyd Thomas

Unrepresented by legal counsel, the 43-year-old defendant denied the charge, allegedly committed on August 17, 2017 at Sand Hills on the Linden-Soesdyke Highway, and explained to the court that he was on the road when he was attacked by a bandit who attempted to snatch a gold chain that he was wearing at the time. Thomas said he put up a fight, during which he was able to disarm the bandit of his gun, and he used it to shoot the bandit.
Because the Police Prosecutor did not object to the defendant being placed on bail, Thomas was placed on $50,000 bail, and was ordered to report to the police station nearest to his home until the conclusion of this matter. The case will continue on September 11.

Pirates attack four fishing vessels in one week

– escape with engines, fuel and boat

The four captains yesterday

Pirates have attacked four fishing vessels in the Waini River, Region One, in the space of one week.
The masked gunmen even escaped with one of the vessels named “Priya 2” after dumping its workers onto another vessel that was in the area and which they had also raided.
Around 02:00 hrs two Sundays ago, three armed men attacked a vessel in the Waini River area and escaped with the engine and fish.
Deochand, the captain for the vessel named “Priya” said that a small boat pulled up alongside his boat and three men, who were all armed, came over to his boat and demanded that the workers remove the engine and threatened to return to kill the crew if they informed the police.
That same day, the same three men attacked another vessel named “Arawak” and escaped with ration, engine and fuel.
The captain of that vessel, Abdul John, said that the men came in a small boat and fired shots towards his boat.
Both matters have been reported.
Last Thursday, Samad John, a captain for over 40 years, was working on a vessel named “Arawak 2” when a small boat with six armed men came up to him and his four workers and demanded that they lie on the bow of the boat.
John said that they were just about to cook when the gunmen, using toques and jerseys to conceal their faces, chopped their anchor and caused their boat to drift away.
“They tell we leh we lie on the boat bow and they went harassing we for money.
They drive we boat to another boat (Priya 2) and empty out stocks into it and then they put “Priya 2” workers in our boat and drive away,” John said.
“Priya 2” captain, Doonaught Deochand said that he had just commenced fishing when he saw two boats heading in his direction.
Deochand said that he pulled up his seine and started his engine but the gunmen in the smaller vessel pursued and fired several shots in his direction.
“They come and tell we if we want live, we have to do as they say.
They tied we up and emptied stocks from “Arawak 2” and put it in our boat, and throw we over to the boat and they left.” The men were left in the boat until last Sunday when they were rescued.
“Arawak” and “Arawak 2” are owned by Carol Persaud, while “Priya” and “Priya 2” are owned by Totaram Bishu. Bishu and Persaud are related.
Yesterday, Persaud, Bishu and the captains for these vessels met with the Crime Chief, Wendell Blanhum.
Mrs. Persaud said that it is unfair for persons to be investing money in their vessels when the pirates are escaping with the benefits. She pointed out that her vessels were attacked many times and the culprits were never charged.
Bishu said that two months ago, pirates escaped with “Priya 2”, after removing the engine.
He estimated his losses to be around $10M.

Taxi driver robbed of his car at gunpoint – in Durban Backlands

At sometime after 16:00hrs on Wednesday last, hire car operator Walter Sanmoogan of Lot 157 Section ‘B’ Non Pareil, East Coast Demerara departed the Lotto Office on Upper Robb Street, Georgetown in silver-coloured Toyota Premio HC 3247, taking an unidentified young female passenger to a destination in Durban Backlands, Georgetown.
But upon arrival at the destination, he reportedly was confronted by a man bearing a gun, and was left with no choice but to surrender his belongings, allowing himself to be stripped of his possessions and being forced to abandon his car.
Speaking with Guyana Times on Thursday, a heavily traumatised Sanmoogan recalled the shocking incident which has rendered him jobless. He said, “The guy told me to sit, and don’t move. He pat down my pockets, take out my money and cellphone, then he tell me, ‘Come out the car and run up the road’.”
The 60-year-old continued, “When I look back, the young lady and the guy jumped in the car and drive away; and that’s the last I saw of my car.”
In counting his losses, the taxi driver highlighted that his 4-year-old Toyota Premio is worth about $2.5M. Adding to that, he indicated that the hijackers also copped his Samsung Galaxy cellular phone and cash worth approximately $20,000.
Sanmoogan presented a faint description of the hijackers, stating that they were both of African descent, but the man was more of mixed race ancestry. He was, however, unable to properly identify the individuals, noting that his main focus was walking away alive.
“At that moment, all I was thinking about is my life being spared. I complied with whatever the guy say. When he told me to run, I run; because I know a lot of drivers who resist and are no longer here to talk about it. So I complied and I run,” the terrified taxi driver expressed.
Sanmoogan has filed a report at the East La Penitence Police Station, and is awaiting the outcome of investigations. However, given that his car is his only source of income, the man is calling on the public to report any sighting of his vehicle. Reports can be made to the taxi driver on telephone number 616-4816, or by contacting the nearest police station

Bandit shot dead, accomplice turns up at hospital with gunshot wounds

â€Ķas businesswoman’s security escort opens fire during botched robbery
A security escort came in for a lot of praise yesterday when he shot and killed a bandit and wounded one of his two accomplices, when they tried to rob the woman he was escorting to Georgetown on the Liliendaal Railway

Embankment Road, Greater Georgetown.
The man was accompanying the 42-year-old businesswoman, who is a supervisor for Interior Flight Services, around 09:45 hrs.
The woman had uplifted several packages, containing cash and gold from the Eugene F. Correia International Airport and was driving to the city with the bodyguard in the passenger’s seat of her motorcar, when they were confronted by two gunmen.
After being previously robbed, the company took extra precaution and sent an escort with the 42-year-old woman.
Kaieteur News was informed that the bandits confronted the duo in the vehicle and as they were fleeing with the valuables, the security opened fire, killing one of them.
The dead bandit has been identified as 24-year-old ex-prison officer, Trydon Munroe of Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam.
Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum confirmed that Munroe was dismissed from the Guyana Prison Service in March last for breaching the agency’s regulations.
Munroe’s alleged accomplice, 23-year-old Mark Griffith of Sheet Anchor, East Canje, Berbice, managed to escape from the scene on foot, but turned up at the Georgetown Public Hospital an hour later with a gunshot wound to the chest. The driver of a getaway car managed to escape.
Investigators found a .32 pistol with three live matching rounds next to Munroe’s lifeless body.
The police said that the investigation revealed that the woman and her armed escort went to Ogle, East Coast Demerara (ECD) and collected several parcels.
As they were returning to Georgetown on the Railway Embankment, a dark-coloured motorcar drove past their vehicle and began driving slowly in front of them before it came to a stop, preventing the businesswoman from proceeding forward.
Munroe and Griffith then exited from the backseat of the vehicle and approached the woman’s car, demanding that she hand over the bags containing cash and gold— this was as Munroe “cranked” his weapon as if he was going to shoot.
Kaieteur News understands that the bags containing the valuables were handed over to the two men and as they were making their way back to their waiting motorcar, the security man came out of the car and opened fire on the men.
Reports are that the two bandits dropped the stolen bags and attempted to run towards their vehicle but the driver sped away, leaving them behind.
This newspaper was informed that Munroe attempted to return fire but instead, collapsed on the roadway where he was later confirmed dead.
His accomplice managed to escape, but made it easy for the lawmen by walking into the hospital.
The police confirmed that he is nursing his injuries under police guard at the hospital, while attempts are being made to locate the getaway driver.
The businesswoman was at the Sparendaam Police Station yesterday but she refused to speak to the media.

DEAD BANDIT’S FACEBOOK ACCOUNT
On Social Media, Munroe had posted several photographs of guns, ammunition and large piles of cash, including $1000 and $5000 bills, confirming that yesterday’s robbery attempt might not have been his first.
In one of the pictures, a bottle of Hennessy can be seen on a bed with a high-powered rifle—looking like an AK-47 and two live rounds.
A photograph of a pile of cash was posted with the caption, “Young money little boss for life make money all the time.”
Munroe’s friends commented on the photographs—some asking where he got the cash from and others asking if they could have some.
In one of the photos he posted with a gun, a friend asked what he was going to do, to which he responded, “I no u no.”

In July, 77 kilogrammes of cocaine, valued at $92.8 million, was allegedly seized in a house in Portmore, St Catherine. Earlier this month, the Narcotics Police, with assistance from the military, seized just over 1,700 pounds of ganja, valued at $68 million, during a 10-hour operation in St Mary.

In the latest incident, law-enforcement sources said the police, accompanied by members of the Customs Contraband Enforcement Team, conducted a snap operation at KCT and immediately trained their focus on cargo from specific containers. “Examination of a 40-foot container revealed a total of five leather bags hidden among the shipment,” one source revealed.

Bandits creating havoc in Berbice

â€Ķ break into Mosque, Mandir, Church at Gay Park

BY ANDREW CARMICHAEL

Bandits over the past few weeks have forcefully made their way into three religious buildings at Gay Park, East Bank Berbice, Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) and took away valuable pieces of electronic devices, among other items.
The most recent incident occurred between Sunday night and Monday evening, at a Mosque at Gay Park. During that burglary, entry was made through an unsecured door. The perpetrator(s) climbed into the main part of the building which housed most of the valuable items belonging to the Mosque.
Imam of the Mosque, Boyie Mohammed, told Guyana Times that members would normally visit the building during the evening period, and on Monday afternoon when they did, they noticed something amiss.
“Things were not in place as we would have left them the previous night and when we looked for the amplifier that we would use to call the Azam with, it was gone. We started to look around and then we realised that there were other things missing. The prayer mats, speaker boxes which we bought recently at very exorbitant prices for the benefit of the Masjid; even that was gone.”
The amplifier was secured in a grill cage and bolted onto the wall. The bolts were unscrewed and the amplifier taken.
According to the Imam of the Providence/Gay Park Mosque, it is not the first time thieves broke into the building and stole items. Back in 2002, a generator valued at close to $1 million was stolen along with cooking utensils which were used for religious functions along with kitchen wear.
A man who resides a few houses away was arrested and placed before the courts for the crime but the case was subsequently dismissed for want of evidence.
“One time we would have bought material to do work on the Mosque and when we went back the next day all of the material gone. The surprising thing is that nobody knows anything; nobody sees anything. Nobody is willing to cooperate and this also happened at the Mandir that is close by and also with the Christian Church that is thereâ€Ķ when you can go into a house of worship and steal, it means you have no fear of this world or fear of what will happen to you,” Muhammad added.
Meanwhile, President of the Gay Park Mosque Feroz Jaffarally is appealing to the person/s who stole from the Mosque to return the items. He related to this publication that all of the items stolen are used by worshipers on a daily basis.

Corentyne man claims he was raped during robbery

4

By Andrew Carmichael

The Police in Berbice are hunting a male suspect, who broke and entered the dwelling house of a Corentyne man on Tuesday, before robbing and allegedly raping him.
The 22-year-old victim, who migrated from the United Kingdom to Guyana, told Guyana Times that he was up at 04:30h on Tuesday morning and was having a telephone conversation with a close relative in Europe.
The man had been living alone for the past several months.
He said he heard a strange sound and soon after noticed a window being pushed open. At first, he thought it was ‘something evil’ and was advised by the person on the phone to close the window.
After he did there was a voice demanding that he opens the door and shortly after one of the bedroom windows was smashed.
The traumatised young man said at about 05:00h, he telephoned the Number 51 Village Police Station and told them that someone was attempting to break into his home.
According to the man, a male wearing a short pair of trousers allegedly climbed through the bedroom window and he gave the man all the money he had and the man who used his shirt to form a mask over his face, also picked up his cellular phone and then said that is not what he was there for.
“He told me that he was here to have sex with me,” the young man said.
The man related that a chopper was allegedly held to his neck and he was told that he will be killed if he did not cooperate. The robbery victim said he was then sodomised.
“I had to cooperate because the chopper was at my neck,” he blurted out.
Speaking of the attack, the victim referred to his attacker as having a smell which led him to believe that the man had been living in the bushes.
According to the victim, the man remained in the house until daylight and at almost 07:00h, the Police arrived. He said had the Police responded promptly, they could have prevented the incident from occurring and even if they were not prompt but had responded in a timely manner, the attacker could have been caught.
The Police were called in and they visited the scene and escorted the victim to the Skeldon Public Hospital where he was examined by a doctor, who confirmed that he was indeed sodomised.
According to the man, the attacker as he was about to leave said he was going to return the cellular phone.
Meanwhile, Police Divisional Commander (Assistant Commissioner) Paul Williams said the information he received differed slightly from what was told to this newspaper.
He said the report the Police received was that the intruder entered through a door and not a window. He added that when he first heard of the alleged incident, there were no issue as it related to the Police’s response time.
“What I learnt is that the person who visited the gentleman (victim), they know each other. The person appealed to him to open the door because he wanted to have sex with him and he refused to open the door. The person then decided to force his way into the house.”
The Police Commander is questioning why from the time the person entered the building and was there for something, had the householder not notified the Police, since he claimed the intruder’s presence was unwanted. He said the Police were told that it was after the person entered the house and would have completed the alleged sex act then the Police were called.
“I don’t know what time he would have called, but what I was made to understand is that when they would have received the report was when the act was already committed. Our information is that when the person was there and telling him that he wanted to come in, he never called,” Williams explained. The Police are continuing their investigation.

Marks on the body of Deon Antone following the beating he received Wednesday last

— police reportedly paid to cover up matter

THE parents of a 16-year-old Aishalton teenager plans to leave no stone unturned following the savage “torture” of their son which they allege was done by a Lethem businessman and his employees last Wednesday at the Marudi Mountains backdam.
Reports are that the boy was beaten into an unconscious state by the businessman and two associates last Wednesday morning in the Marudi Mountains mining fields in the Rupununi, after the men accused the former Richard Ishmael Secondary School student of theft.
According to the young man’s stepfather, Stanly Young, his son works in the backdam where the family has a mining claim.
He said on Tuesday night of last week, his stepson along with friends went and partied at a popular spot in the area which he noted is next door to the businessman’s shop.
Young, a former police sergeant, said his stepson went to the businessman’s shop while under the influence of alcohol and asked for some food during the night as he partied with his friends.

Reports from the area are that the young man left the shop and slept the night in a truck, which was parked some 100 metres from the shop.
According to a resident of Aishalton, on Wednesday morning, the businessman and two employees went to the truck, pulled the sleeping teenager out of the vehicle and accused him of stealing from his shop.
Reports are that the businessman, who is well-connected in the Rupununi , placed his boot on the teenager’s throat as he inflicted a sound thrashing with a piece of hose which is used in mining pits.

BROKEN TEETH
According to an eyewitness, as two men held the lad, the businessman asked for a piece of metal and when provided with the instrument, he continued to beat the teen, breaking two of his teeth in the process.
The teen was left lying on the roadway following the ordeal as he groaned in pain.
Young said that while he is not defending his stepson for the accusation of theft levelled against him, he is upset at the manner in which the incident was treated by police ranks who went to investigate it.
He said he was told about the incident several hours after it had occurred, noting that his stepson was taken to the Romanex Mining operations in the Marudi area where a medex tended to the injured lad.

“They said he was in and out of consciousness,” the concerned man noted.
Young said when he arrived at the medical centre at the mining operations, he was told that his stepson’s condition was dire, and as such, he was rushed out from the area on an all-terrain vehicle to Aishalton, some 30 miles away.
Young said as he prepared to leave the mining fields for Aishalton, he encountered two young police ranks and he alleged that the officers informed him that there was nothing they could have done, since the businessman had offered to “settle the matter.”
He said he grew angry at the ranks’ statement, noting that as a former policeman, he understands that no one “can take the law into his own hands and get away with it.”
He said when he visited his stepson at the Aishalton Hospital on Thursday, the young man refused to say anything, since he was offered a sum of $300,000 by the businessman to remain quiet.
He said later in the day, his stepson discharged himself from the hospital and managed to travel back into the backdam to the family’s mining operations.

FEARFUL
The stepfather said that when he enquired of his wife about his stepson’s condition, she told him that the teen was fearful of two police ranks whom he alleged were after their “cut” of the $300,000 bribe which the businessman had offered.
Young said he visited the police station at Aishalton and an officer told him that they had no transportation, and as such, they could not arrest the businessman.
“How can they have no transportation to arrest this man, yet two of them were in the backdam the day of the incident speaking with the same businessman?” Young asked.
He said that he will me making a formal report on the matter to the Lethem Police Station today, since he had no trust in the ranks at the Aishalton Police Station, whom he believes are attempting to cover up the matter.
He said the businessman’s actions amounts to torture and he plans to ensure that the matter is not swept under the carpet.
Repeated calls by this publication to the number of the businessman for a comment on Sunday night proved futile.

House blaze leads fire-fighters to man’s burnt body in living room

– Cousin arrested as cops probe possible robbery/murder
Fire-fighters early yesterday morning stumbled upon the body of a Golden Grove, East Coast Demerara man just minutes after they were called to his home to investigate a fire that had broken out in one of the bedrooms.
The victim has been identified as 39-year-old Sean Prince, of 67 Sideline Dam, Golden Grove. He was managing his father’s shipping company—Prince’s Shipping—located in Muneshwers Building on Main Street, Georgetown.
The man’s burnt body was found among the debris in the living room of his home around 01:30 hrs.
A cousin who lives in the bottom flat of the two-storey property has been taken into custody as police probe a possible robbery/murder. The house in which the duo was residing is owned by Prince’s father, who resides in the United States of America.
Fire Chief Marlon Gentle when contacted yesterday said that when his ranks responded to the scene, they had established that it was not a normal fire, based on the physical evidence present at the scene. He indicated that they are awaiting a Post Mortem examination to determine the cause of the businessman’s death.
Kaieteur News was informed that residents claimed that they heard what sounded like gunshots in the village just before they noticed Prince’s home was engulfed in fire. A detective confirmed that they have received this information.
Prince was last seen imbibing with persons in the village and watching cricket late Wednesday night at a shop in Golden Grove. After the game, he reportedly left in the company of a woman, who is said to be a stranger to villagers.
It was the cousin, who has been detained, that raised an alarm. He managed to save some of his belongings.
A relative of the deceased, who asked that her name be withheld, said that by the time she arrived at the location, the blaze had almost engulfed most of the building. “When they (firemen) put out the fire, they found the body.”
The woman is convinced that something suspicious took place. One resident was heard saying, “You tell me a big strong man like that can’t scream or get out of a burning house? Something surely wrong there.”
A neighbour said, “Everyone de watching de cricket, and as soon as it finished we went to bed and shortly after, we hear about the fire.” He added that residents assumed that the man was not at home.
Kaieteur News was informed that most of the man’s relatives are residing in the US and they are currently making arrangements to come.

JOINT Services ranks were on Monday dispatched to the Five Star backdam in the North West District following a robbery on Sunday afternoon.

Reports from the area are that a group of armed men, suspected to be Venezuelans, invaded a mining camp on Sunday afternoon at Five Star.

Divisional Commander, Rabindranath Budhram, told the Guyana Chronicle that one person sustained a gunshot wound to the leg. Reports are that 18-year old Troy Joseph of the Falls Top mining area, located between Port Kaituma and Matthews Ridge was shot and the man was taken the Matthews Ridge Hospital for treatment.

There have been several incidents involving suspected Venezuelan gunmen committing robberies close to the mining areas at the border. In July this year, three Port Kaituma, North West District miners met a brutal end following a robbery at a mining camp on Venezuela’s side of the border.

The men, Vernon Eudoxie, 63, Cologne Solomon, 23, an ex-policeman and Samuel Moses, 19, were killed during the incident at a Brazilian-owned mining camp at an area known as “Imatake Backdam” across the Venezuela border. Another man, Joel Paton, 19, of Supenaam, was injured and was treated at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), after being transferred from the Port Kaituma Hospital.

Miners in the area told this newspaper that there are groups of Venezuelans known as “sindicatos” of “malandros” who would “control” mining areas in that country’s side of the border. The miners are made to pay a percentage of their mining earnings to the groups.

Gunmen hijack taxi in Kitty

Gunmen on Sunday assaulted a 65-year-old taxi driver, after which they carted off a Toyota Premio which he hired to operate as a taxi and some of his possessions at Kitty Public Road, Georgetown.
Reports are that the incident occurred around 12:45h on Sunday, just as Percey Busey, a driver attached to Eddy’s Taxi Service, had arrived in Kitty in the car bearing registration PRR 3295, to pick up a passenger.
Busey, in an interview with Guyana Times, said that he was at the time reversing on the Kitty roadway while awaiting the arrival of his passenger when two men pounced on him. He said one of the men was carrying a gun.
The traumatised taxi driver went on to say that one of the men held a gun to his head and threatened to shoot him if he did not comply with their demands while the other opened the door and attempted to drag him out by his collar. Refusing to leave the car, Busey questioned the intentions of the hijackers, resulting in the gunman dealing him a blow to his mouth, using the handle of the weapon.
Eventually, the driver surrendered and exited the car. However, after gaining access to the vehicle, the duo then insisted that he get into the back seat, but he managed to escape leaving his possessions behind. It was then that the hijackers drove off with the car.
Following the incident, a report was made to the Police.
This report comes just weeks after the Guyana Police Force (GPF) had issued an official warning, calling on drivers, especially those operating taxis in the capital city, to be on the lookout for carjackers.
In the advisory, the GPF urged that all taxi drivers, especially those operating Toyota Allion and Toyota Premio motor cars, to “be on the alert for potential hijackers”. It was further disclosed that the attackers have been hiring cabs in Georgetown under the pretext of wanting transportation and “upon arrival at their requested locations, the drivers are robbed of their personal belongings as well as their motor cars,” the statement noted.
Just last month, another elderly taxi driver was relieved of his silver Toyota Premio and a quantity of cash in a similar manner.
This publication previously reported that after hiring a car at Robb Street, Georgetown, an unidentified young woman lured the taxi driver into a trap, where he was greeted at their destination with a man carrying a gun.
Walter Sanmoogan, 60, of Lot 157 Section B Nonpareil, East Coast Demerara, left with a passenger sometime after 16:00h and upon arrival in D’Urban Backlands, he was stripped of his possessions and forced to abandon his car. Sanmoogan’s vehicle is yet to be retrieved.

Bandits abduct driver and conductress, escape with vehicle

– victims unhappy with treatment at police outpost

A minibus driver and his conductress were abducted at gunpoint around 21:00 hrs last Saturday by two passengers who escaped with their vehicle after forcing the victims to accompany them to Kuru Kururu on the Soesdyke/Linden Highway.
Mohamed Hazrafdeen, 51, of Little Diamond, East Bank Demerara, said that the men, who posed as passengers, had attacked them at around 21:00hrs in the vicinity of Craig Village, East Bank Demerara.
Hazrafdeen’s ordeal reportedly began when he dropped off two of his passengers at a bus shed at Craig, East Bank Demerara.
He said that two male passengers, who were the only other commuters, pretended to disembark at the same bus shed. Instead, one of them held the conductress at gunpoint, while the other ran to the driver’s side of the bus.
While one suspect shoved the conductress into the passenger seat and held her at gunpoint, the other man ran to Hazrafdeen and pressed a knife to the driver’s neck.
Hazrafdeen said that he was attempting to start the vehicle, but his attacker said, “Do not play stupid; turn around and see the conductress.”
The bandit then forced Hazrafdeen to sit in the front passenger seat, while claiming that he had been paid to kill the driver. Hazrafdeen said that he was then ordered, at gunpoint, to sit in the back seat.
Hazrafdeen stated that the men appeared intent on shooting him, but he pretended to be sick and claimed that he had a mental disorder and had also contracted typhoid.
This apparently made the men decide to spare his life, and one of the bandits entered the driver’s seat and drove to the Soesdyke/Linden highway.
Hazrafdeen alleged that during the journey, the bandit who was driving said, “Kill him, we already got paid.” However, his accomplice opted to spare the driver’s life, and told the conductress that she would be safe once she did nothing “stupid.”
According to Hazrafdeen, the bandit who was guarding him said, “Don’t worry kill himâ€Ķ..lets dump him offâ€Ķ..he gonna die anyway”.
On reaching Kuru Kururu, the men allegedly shoved their victims out of the vehicle, after relieving them of their valuables, including documents and cash.
Hazrafdeen said he then walked with his conductress to the Kuru Kururu Police Station where ranks told them that their entire patrol was at a festival, and there was no one to take their report.
Another rank immediately instructed the victims to file a report at the Grove Police Station.
Hazrafdeen said he told the rank he had no money because he was robbed.
The policeman reportedly replied, “What you want me to do?â€Ķâ€Ķ.go flag a bus or vehicle out there”.
At that point, another policeman drove into the compound. Hazrafdeen said that he then asked the other policeman if the rank who was driving could take him to the station.
According to Hazrafdeen, the rank, whom he identified, replied, “He’s off duty”.
Hazrafdeen said he left the compound and returned to the roadway, where a driver eventually gave him a lift and took him to the Grove Police Station.
The officers present took his report and are currently investigating the matter.
The stolen minibus is a green Toyota with licence plate BTT 5951. Hazrafdeen is offering a reward of $200,000 for the return of his minibus.

A WOMAN and a taxi driver were shot and injured early Tuesday morning by a lone gunman on a bicycle. This occurred during an armed robbery at Plantation Providence, East Bank Demerara.

Injured are Kathy Vyphuis who was shot in the arm and taxi driver, Tommy Lee Stephenson, who was shot in the hand at about 02:00hrs when he (Stephenson) stopped to drop off Vyphuis who was returning home from work.

According to Nicole Telford, the injured woman’s neighbour, she was awakened by two loud gunshots and the screams of a female which caused her to get out of bed to enquire.
Telford told the Guyana Chronicle that she took the injured Vyphuis into her house while the taxi driver sped off to the Diamond Hospital.

However, a few minutes after, the bandit came to Telford’s door and asked that that she open it as he had Vyphuis’ bag and claimed it was not she he wanted. At this point, Telford said she became afraid and began shouting for help but no one came to their assistance. She also called the police who, when they showed up an hour later, related that their incident was the third robbery within days to have occurred in the area.

Telford disclosed that she has not slept properly for three nights as the bandit had shot and damaged the street light in front of her hom, which she and the injured neighbour had paid to have installed.

Meanwhile, Commander ‘A’ Division, Marlon Chapman when contacted said, both the taxi driver and passenger, are stable. According to him, the matter is being investigated but he pointed out that there is only one anti-crime patrol that covers the villages between Eccles and Grove.

Chapman said too, that the Providence Police Station does not have the services of a vehicle at present, however, efforts are being made to rectify the situation.
