While Lots of Indians became rich with contraband under PNC, it came with sacrifice and hard work.

In the process, Policemen, Senior Police officers, Ministers, Senior PNC personnel benefit from bribery.

These businessmen had to sleep with their eyes open as it was the famous kick down the door bandit during this time.

I personally knows of numerous PNC personnel who had vacation fully paid for their families, cars were bought for some, houses were paid of for the Minister sweet woman.

The mysteries surrounding the death and burial of the Founder Leader

Mystery and intrigue surrounded the death and burial of Forbes Burnham. Now that he has been declared the father of social cohesion in Guyana, it is perhaps a good time for the Granger administration to set the record straight as to the causes of Burnham’s death.
It is also time to confirm that his remains are indeed entombed in the mausoleum in the Botanic Gardens.
Burnham died at the age of 62. Had he been alive today he would have been older than Robert Mugabe is at present.
Forbes Burnham is perhaps the only leader in the world to have been buried twice. He was buried days after his death and again one year later, when his body was returned from the Soviet Union where it was sent to be preserved.
Forbes Burnham died thirty one years ago. The then ruling PNC wanted to elevate him to the status of a demi-God and so no sooner was he entombed, the mourners were chased out of the Botanic Gardens where his body was laid to rest.
Burnham’s body was retrieved from his tomb and smuggled back to the funeral parlor. It was later shipped out to the Soviet Union.
At the time Guyana has a great deal of power outages. There were reports circulating that the long funeral service which the PNC organized to eulogize Burnham had caused deterioration of the body. There were also suggestions that Burnham’s remains further deteriorated because of a power outage at the place where it was being held prior to it being shipped to the Soviet Union which had agreed to a request to embalm his body so that it could lie permanently on display.
The PNC wanted to make a Burnham a political God. The party wanted him larger than life and in the same category as Mao Tse Tung of China and Lenin of the Soviet Union, whose bodies were embalmed and put on permanent display.
The theory about the deterioration of the body after the funeral must be examined in the context of the long time that the body was in the Soviet Union. If the body had in fact deteriorated en route to the USSR, the Soviets would not have kept it so long.
There is another view that body never reached the Soviet Union. It was said that what came back to Guyana was a wax model made in Madame Toussaint’s museum in England. One unconfirmed report had stated that Burnham’s body was so badly deteriorated en route to the Soviet Union that it had to be buried in England.
They question why having gone to so much trouble to preserve Burnham, why the government would bury him. One possible explanation was the changing ideological stance of Desmond Hoyte who, it was said, was not keen to have the presence of Burnham hanging over his presidency.
Burnham was buried a second time after it was said that his family agreed that he should be buried in keeping respect for the sensitivities of the Guyanese people.
If his burial was shrouded in controversy, so was his death. Burnham died on the operating table while undergoing surgery at the Georgetown Hospital. Burnham had gone for a throat operation. Cuba had flown in two specialists for the operation. Burnham never woke up from the anesthesia. It is said that his heart gave out.
This was in August of 1985. Did Burnham have a heart condition? The United States had received reports that in 1977, Burnham had suffered a heart attack. US embassy sources had reported that he missed a major address to the nation that year. When he was seen months later by an embassy official at his home in Belfield, he seemed far thinner.
Declassified documents also reveal that a Trinidadian doctor had told US embassy sources in Guyana that Burnham had throat cancer. Burnham was a known chain smoker.
The Guyana government has never revealed why throat surgery was necessary and if Burnham did suffer from cancer.
What was said was that Burnham died a pauper and that the government had waived his estate duties.

Last year I was on a flight to London and a woman sat next to me on the plane.  She started a conversation by asking me if I was from India.  I said no and told her I’m from Guyana.  We chatted and I realized she knew a lot of political names from the 60s and 70s.  She turned out to be Cheddi Jagan’s Sister.  She studied nursing in London and after working for several years as a nurse went to medical school and became a doctor.

One day when she was taking care of her patients at the hospital another doctor told her that the President of Guyana was admitted to the hospital and if she wanted to see him.  Not long after that she heard that Burnham died at Georgetown hospital.

PPP ANNOUNCES "CRITICAL SUPPORT" OF PNC GOVERNMENT

1975 August 12

http://wikileaks.org/plusd/cab...75GEORGE01323_b.html

1. SUMMARY: OPPOSITION MOSCOW-LINE PPP OFFERS LIMITED SUPPORTTO PNC FOR ACTIONS AND POLICIES PROMOTING GUYANA'S TRANSFORMATION INTO MARXIST-LENINIST SOCIETY. PPP LEADER JGAN ADMITS GUYANA HASPOSSIBILITIES OF BECOMING SECOND CUBA. NO DECISION YET ON PPP-RE-ENTERING PARLIAMENT. END SUMMARY.2. FOLLOWINGON MOSCOW-LINE COMMUNIST PEOPLES PROGRESSIVE PARTY ANNUAL CONFERENCE (AIRGRAM FOLLOWS), GENERAL SECRETARY CHEDDI JAGAN ANNOUNCED AUGUST 9 THAT PPP WOULD HENCEFORTH GIVE RULING PEOPLES NATIONAL CONGRESS QUOTE CRITICAL SUPPORT UNQUOTE RATHER THAN CONTINUING ITS PRESENT POLICY OF COMPLETE NON-COOPERATION AND OPPOSIT INNFM JAGAN DISMISSED WIDE SPECULATION THAT PPP WOULD ANNOUNCE END OF ITS BOYCOTT OF PARLIAMENT BY STATING THAT MATTER HAD NOT BEEN CONSIDERED AT CONFERENCE.3. JAGAN RATIONALIZED PPP DECISION TO GIVE LIMITED SUPPORTTO PNC GOVT BY ADMITTING THAT PNC HAD TAKEN A NUMBER OF SOCIALIST ICUN CLASSIFIED UNCLASSIFIED PAGE 02 GEORGE 01323 122046ZAND ANTI-IMPERIALISTIC STEPS SUCH AS NATIONALIZATION OF REYNOLDS AND JESSEL'S HOLDINGS AND RECENT INTERNATIONAL MOVES OPPOSING U.S. AND SUPPORTING ANTI-IMPERIALISTS. AT ONE POINT JAGAN INDICATED

QUOTE GUYANA HAS THE POSSIBILITIES OF BECOMING A SECOND CUBA UN-QUOTE, THEREBY SEEMINGLY AGREEING WITH BURNHAM'S ASSERTION EARLYTHIS YEAR THAT GUYANA WOULD BECOME QUOTE THE FIRST SOCIALIST STATEIN SOUTH AMERICA UNQUOTE (SEE GEORGETOWN 345).4. JAGAN CLAIMED THAT THERE ARE FEW SOCIALISTS IN PNC, HOWEVER,AND DESCRIBED NEW ROLE OF PPP AS VANGUARD WHICH WILL SUPPORT PROGRESSIVE MOVES TOWARD SOCIALISM WHILE OPPOSING OTHER TENDEN-CIES. SUCH VANGUARD IS NECESSARY, ACCORDING TO JAGAN, BECAUSE QUOTE PNC WILL ONLY MOVE UNDER PRESSURE TO A POSITION OF ANTI-IMPERIALISM AND SOCIALISM END QUOTE.5. COMMENT: PPP HAS RIGHT TO TAKE UP ITS 14 SEATS IN PARLIAMENT,WON IN 1973 ELECTION BUT NEVER OCCUPIED AT ANY TIME. PRESENT OPPOSITION LEADER FEILDEN SINGH OF MODERATE UNITED FORCE HASPUBLICLY OFFERED TO TURN OVER CONSTITUTIONAL POST OF LEADER OFOPPOSITION TO JAGAN IN THAT EVENT. THERE IS CONSIDERABLE BELIEF LOCALLY, REFLECTED IN GOG-CONTROLLED NEWSPAPERS, THAT PPP MADE PRESENT SHIFT AS RESULT OF PRESSURE FROM CUBA AND SOVIET UNION, ALONG WITH EVIDENCE ITS POLICY OF BOYCOTT WAS WEAKENING PARTY WHILE ALLOWING PNC TO PRE-EMPT FIELD BY LEADING GUYANA'S MOVEMENT TOWARD LENINISM AND SOLIDIFYING POSITION OF PARTY SUPERIOR-ITY OVER GOVT. UNLESS BURNHAM CATEGORICALLY REJECTS PPP MOVE,IT SEEMS LIKELY THAT NEXT STEP WILL INVOLVE PPP TAKING UP ITS SEATS IN PARLIAMENT, WHICH WOULD ALSO HELP PPP FINANCES. THUS FAR, PNC HAS LABELLED PPP'S PUBLIC RATIONALE OF PUSHING PNC TOWARD SOCIALISM AS QUOTE PATHETIC UNQUOTE, BUT HAS NOT TAKEN ANY STEP SEEMINGLY DESIGNED TO DISCOURAGE PPP'S RE-ENTRY INTO PARLIAMENT.KREBS

PPP'S SUPPORT OF BURNHAM ALIENTATES BERBICE'S EAST INDIANS

1976 May 13

http://wikileaks.org/plusd/cab...76GEORGE00957_b.html

1. SUMMARY: THE RECENT UNOFFICIAL CELEBRATION OF "INDIAN IMMIGRATION DAY", MARKING THE 138TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ARRIVAL IN GUYANA OF THE FIRST EAST INDIAN IDENTURED WORKERS, ILLUSTRATED THAT THIS COUNTRY'S RACIAL PROBLEMS ARE STILL ALIVE, RIVALING IN INTERNAL POLITICAL IMPORTANCE THE INCREASINGLY CONTROVERSIAL SHIFT TO THE LEFTIN THE GOG'S POLITICAL IDEOLOGY. AS THE EAST INDIAN DOMINATED,MOSCOW-LINE PEOPLE'S PROGRESSIVE PARTY (PPP) AND THE OVER WHELMINGLY BLACK, RULING PEOPLE'S NATIONAL CONGRESS (PNC) MOVE CLOSER TOGETHER THE FORMER WILL CONTINUE TO LOSE THE SUPPORT OF THE RACIALLY MOTI-VATED EAST INDIANS. WHILE SEVERAL ETHNIC ORGANIZATIONS EXIST TOWHICH THEY COULD LEND THEIR BACKING, NONE OF THE GROUPS IS, ASYET, SUFFICIENTLY WELL ORGANIZED POLITICALLY TO TAKE OVER FROMTHE PPP. END SUMMARY.2. "INDIAN IMMIGRATION DAY" WAS UNOFFICIALLY CELEBRATED AGAIN THIS YEAR, WITH MAY 5 MARKING THE 138TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ARRIVAL IN GUYANA OF THE FIRST EAST INDIAN IDENTURED LABORERS (RAMA, AHINDU, AND KHAN, A MUSLIM).

THE LARGEST COMMEMORATIVE EVENTS,CONFIDENTIALCONFIDENTIALPAGE 02 GEORGE 00957 132306Z WHICH PROVIDED SEVERAL EAST INDIAN LEADERS THE OPPORTUNITY TO PUBLICLY EXPRESS THEIR DISPLEASURE WITH GOG POLICIES, TOOK PLACE ON MAY 9 IN THE PREDOMINANTLY EAST INDIAN BERBICE REGION IN THE NEIGHBORING TOWNS OF ALBION AND CANJE.

APPROXIMATELY 300 PERSONS WERE PRESENT AT THE ALBION SPORTS COMPLEX WHERE THE PROGRAM INCLUDED EAST INDIAN SONGS AND SPEECHES BY SEVERAL COMMUNITY LEADERS. THE ACTIVITIES AT CANJE WERE SIMLAR, BUTA TURN-OUT OF NEARLY 1,000 PERSONS WAS REPORTED.4. THE EVENTS RECEIVED ALMOST NO PUBLICITY FROM THE OFFICIAL MEDIA,BUT THE ORGANZING GROUPS PASSED OUT THEIR OWN COPIES OF RESOLUTIONS AND STATEMENTS. IN GENERAL, THEY CALLED FOR AN ENZATO WHAT THEAUTHORS CONSIDER TO BE RACIAL DISCRIMINATION BY THE PNC GOVT AGAINSTTHE EAST INDIANS. SUCH DISCRIMINATION IS CLAIMED TO EXIST IN VARIOUS FORMS, FROM JOB DISTRIBUTION TO SUPPRESSION OF EAST INDIAN CULTURE AND TRADITIONS. THE GUYANA COUNCIL OF INDIAN ORGANI-ZATIONS (GCIO), AND ANTI-PNC AND ANTI-PPP UMBRELLA ORGANIZATION,ANNOUNCED IN A MAY 5 "PRESS RELEASE" (WHICH DID NOT APPEAR IN THE PRESS) THAT I "HAS CALLED ON ALL FOREIGN GOVTS TO TAKE STEPS TO HAVE GUYANA EXCLUDED FROM ALL INTERNATIONAL BODIES... UNTIL THE GUYANA GOVT CHANGES ITS RHODESIA-LIKE RACIST POLICIES AND ALLOWS MANORITY RULE". ALL OF THE SPEECHES AT ALBION WERE ANTI-GOG/PNC (GAIN CHARGING RACIAL DISCRIMINATION), MAKING NO MENTION WHATSOEVER OFTHE OVERWHELMINGLY EAST INDIAN OPPOSITION PPP.5. COMMENT: THE INDIAN IMMIGRATION DAY EVENTS SHOWED THAT THE APANJAHT (POLITICAL DIVISION ALONG RACIAL LINES- "VOTE FOR YOUR OWN") CONCEPT IS STILL ALIVE AND WELL AND LIVID IN BERBICE, BUT NO LONGER AS FIRMLY IN HE SERVICE OF THE PPP. PPP LEADER CHEDDI JAGAN HAD ALREAY DISTURBED MANY OF HIS SUPPORTERS WITH HIS POLICY OF CRITICAL SUPPORT OF THE PNC GOVT. AS HE APPEARS TO MOVE CLOSER TO PM BURNHAM, THE DISGRUNTLED ELEMENT WITHIN THE PPP GROWS INCREASINGLY RESTLESS AND MORE NUMEROUS. THESE CONSERVATIVE, NOW WAVERING SUPPOR-TERS OF JAGAN IN GENERAL ARE RACIALLY MOTIVATED AND CAPITALISTS(MOSTLY OF THE SOCIAL DEMOCRATIC MOLD) AT HEART. MANY OF THEM SEE SOME MERIT IN THE GOG'S SOCIAL POLICIES, BUT MOST FEEL THAT THROUGH THEM INDOLENT BLACKS ARE BEING SUPPORTED BY HARD-WORKING EAST INDIANS WHO FACE INCREASING RACIAL DISCRIMINATION FROM THE BLACK-DOMINATED GOVT. AT THE SAME TIME, A GROWING NUMBER OF EAST INDIANS FEEL THAT JAGAN AND THE PPP HAVE BETRAYED THEIR INTERESTS.

CONFIDENTIALCONFIDENTIALPAGE 03 GEORGE 00957 132306ZAL

THOUGH THEY COULD HALF-HEARTEDLY BACK THE MOSCOW-LINE PPP AS AN INDIAN PARTY, THEN AN NO LONGER EXCEPT IT AS BOTH A COMMUNIST AND RACIALLY NON-REPRESENTATIVE PARTY. AS A RESULT, JAGAN'S SUPPORT HAS REACHED A STAGE AT WHICH REPORTS OF LOW PARTICIPATION AT PPP RALLIES ARE FREQUENTLY COMBINED WITH TALK OF THE NEED FOR THE PARTY LEADER'S ASSASSINATION (REFTEL).6. THESE MORE CONSERVATIVE EAST INDIANS ARE CONFRONTED WITH SEVERAL PROBLEMS, HOWEVER, INCLUDING THEIR OWN DISUNITY, THE LACKOF AN EFFECTIVE, NON-COMMUNIST POLITICA LEADER, AND STRONG PRESSURE FROM A WATCHFUL GOVT (E.G; ONE OF SEVERAL BLACK,PLAIN-COTHED POLICEMEN

PRESENT AT THE ALBION CEREMONY ASKED THE ONLY AMERICANS IN ATTENDANCE AND EMBOFF AND TWO NON-OFFICIAL GUESTS-- FOR THEIR NAMES AND OCCUPATIONS ON ORDERS FROM HIS SUPERIORS; GCIO ORGANIZATIONS IN GEORGETOWN WERE REFUSED PERMISSION TO HOLD A RALLY HERE BY THE LOCAL AUTHORITIES; AND ONE OF THE SPEAKERS AT ALBION, AN EAST INDIAN,CLAMED THAT THE GOVT HAS BEEN HARASSING THEM THROUGH TAX INVESTIGA-TIONS FOR SEVERAL YEARS). SEVERAL OF THE GUEST SPEAKERS AT ALBION BLAMED THE COMPARATIVELY POOR TURNOUT THERE ON THE SPONSORING RAMAKHAN ORGANIZATION (ITS POSTER CAMPAIGN CALLING FOR AUTONOMY FOR BERBICE- SEE REFTEL - FAILED TO MATERIALIZE). RAMA KHAN'S PRESIDENT,MUSTAPHA ALLY, IS A FENCE-STRADDLING, NOMINAL PNC MEMBER AND SO DOES NOT ENJOY THE FULL CONFIDENCE OF THE ARA'S EAST INDIANS. ALLY HAD INVITED SOME HIGH RANKING,BLACK GOVT OFFICIALS TO SPEAK AS WELL, BUT THEY REPORTEDLY REFUSED TO SHARE THE STAGE WITH CERTAIN MEMBERS OF THE GCIO. PPP LEADERS ALSO DECLINED THE INVITA-TION, LEAVING THE SPOTLIGHT TO THE MORE CONSERVATIVE EAST INDIAN LEADERS.7. MANY OF THESE INDIAN ORGANIZATIONS HAVE BEEN AROUND FOR SEVERAL YEARS. IN THE PAST,HOWEVER, THEY HAVE BEEN OVER SHADOWED AND OUT-CLASSED BY THE BETTER ORGANIZED, MORE EFFECTIVE PPP WHICH ENJOYS THE POLITICAL SUPPORT OF THE SUGAR WORKERS UNINS. SHOULD THESE CONSER-VATIVE ETHNIC BASED GROUPS BECOME MORE INVOLVED IN POLITICS,THEY WOULD RECEIVE THE SUPPORT OF MANY OF THOSE DISENCHANTED WITH BOTH THE PNC AND PPP, SINCE IN THEIR EYES, THE PPP IS FAILING TO PROMOTE THE INTERESTS OF GUYANA'S EAST INDIAN COMMUNITY.AGAINST THE PERCEIVED THREAT FROM THE AFRO-GUYANESE. THE CELEBRATIONS ON INDIAN IMMIGRATION DAY ILLUSTRATED FACT THAT A LARGE PERCENTAGE OF GUYANESE STILL BASE THEIR DECISION TO BACK A GIVEN POLITICAL PARTY CONFIDENTIAL CONFIDENTIAL PAGE 04 GEORGE 00957 132306Z ON RACE. UNTIL THIS ISSUE IS SETTLED, POLITICAL IDEOLOGY WILL CONTINUE TO BE OF SECONDARY IMPORTANCE TO MANY GUYANESE.KREBBS

PEOPLE'S PROGRESSIVE PARTY (PPP) REQUESTS DECISION- MAKING ROLE IN GOVERNMENT

1977 January 11

https://wikileaks.org/plusd/ca...77GEORGE00054_c.html

1. PPP DECLARED DURING PARLIAMENTARY DEBATE THAT AS PART OF GOG CALL FOR UNITY THEY MUST BE ALLOWED TO SHARE POWER AND HAVP ROLE IN DECISION-MAKING PROCESS. FURTHER, THAT PERSECUTION OF LEFT-WING FORCES MUST CEASE. PPP INDICATED THAT ITS 17-POINT PLAN COULD SERVE AS BASIS FOR ECONOMIC IMPROVEMENT AND NATIONAL UNITY. PLAN CALLS FOR NATIONALIZA- TION OF BANKS AND INSURANCE COMPANIES, LAND REFORM, CENTRALLY PLANNED ECONOMY, CLOSER RELATIONS WITH SOCIALIST COUNTRIES, AND PARTICIPATION OF PPP IN GOVERNMENT. 2. FONMIN WILLS REPLIED TO PPP CRITICISM OF BUDGET BY LIMITED OFFICIAL USE LIMITED OFFICIAL USE PAGE 02 GEORGE 00054 111132Z URGING OPPOSITION TO QUOTE MAKE PEACE WITH THE SOCIALIST REVOLUTION UNQUOTE. DR. CHEDDI JAGAN, PPP LEADER, HAD CALLED FOR ALTERATION OF POLITICAL, INSTITUTIONAL AND IDEOLOGICAL SUPERSTRUCTURE TO CORRRESPOND WITH ECONOMIC POLICIES WHICH HAD ENDED FOREIGN CONTROL OF GUYANESE ECONOMY. WILLS EMPHASIZED THAT HOSTILE ACTS DIRECTED AGAINST GUYANA BY EXTERNAL SOURCES HAD HAMPERED ECONOMIC ADVANCEMENT. HE POINTED OUT THAT PPP FAILED TO APPRE- CIATE STRATEGIC POSITION OF GUYANA IN WORLD AND TO UNDERSTAND THAT APPLICATION OF SCIENTIFIC SOCIALISM MUST BE WITHIN GIVEN SOCIO-ECONOMIC AND CULTURAL CON- DITIONS OF COUNTRY. PPP AGREED THAT GOG FACED THREATS FROM EXTERNAL FOES AND EXPRESSED SATISFACTION WITH CHANGE IN FOREIGN POLICY UNDER WILLS' GUIDANCE. 3. PNC'S CALL FOR UNITY AND PPP'S REQUEST FOR GOVERN- MENT ROLE HAS POINTED OUT AGAIN THAT THE COMPETING SOCIALIST PARTIES DIFFER OVER TACTICS AND NOT BASIC POLICIES. COLUMNIST IN "CHRONICLE" NOTED THAT BUDGET DEBATE HAS PRODUCED QUOTE A GOOD DEAL OF INTELLECTUAL EXERCISE TO JUSTIFY THE CONTINUED EXISTENCE OF DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THEM UNQUOTE. 4. COMMENT: PPP'S POLICY OF CRITICAL SUPPORT FOR THE GOVERNMENT'S SOCIALIST POLICIES ADOPTED AFTER IT TOOK SEATS IN PARLIAMENT IN 1975 WAS SIGN OF GOOD FAITH. PPP HAS CLEARLY BEEN DISAPPOINTED THAT GOVERNMENT HAS NOT RESPONDED POSITIVELY BY GRANTING IT AN INPUT INTO POLICY-MAKING. PPP HAS CONTINUED TO HIGHLIGHT INCONSISTENCIES IN GOVERNMENT'S SOCIALIST POLICIES, AND HAS BEEN BITTERLY CRITICAL OF GOVERNMENT'S FAILURE TO MEET ITS DEVELOPMENT GOALS. Banna, stop behaving like you talking to Marsians!

That was the time when Guyana just made a huge windfall on Sugar.  It was the times when Guyana was awash with Galants, Lancers, Austins etc, ever PNC with 3 GCEs got a job and a car!  But Guyana had no money for basic food.

And if the Government has no forex and was a simple case of money, why were people being prosecuted for having 1 pound of flour?  Why they raided private homes!

Flour was banned, but to ease the criticism they said forex, but cars were being imported by the boatload!

Django, you making yourself a fool!

Let me explain a few things to you , the people in the country didn't know what was happening, some took the words of politicians as concrete proof.

In searches for information on what really occurred in Guyana , stumbled on lots of documents with details of how the government was operating. Some are from American Diplomats who was stationed in Guyana.

Some of the operations i have seen and known because of connections.

Please i will prefer a conversation without invective's , leave that for some of the other posters , we are not fighting for any top spot who know more than who.

Maybe you referring to yourself! It was obvious, foodstuff was banned but cars for PNC members were being imported by the boatload!

Maybe PNC had you buying their happy horse shit!

The LADA cars imported from Russia for PNC ministers.

The question is banning of flour .

Cut the bullshitting out ,let's have a straight conversation. Never worked for the government.

Now tell us what years the Cars was imported , no presentation of ...dem say.

You are the bullshitter.  PNC imported cars lavishly till the late 70’s.  The last were Ladas.

All this while claiming no money for basic food.

Cut to the chase!   If it was not banned, why was it considered “contraband”.  Look it up!

Did the police also got it wrong why so many vehicles became corpses in Brickdam police station compound?

It was named such , because it was in the batches of illegal smuggled goods.

Regarding the Ladas do you recall which company was the importer.

So the vehicles was seized for flour or other illegal smuggled goods ? Banna i had few friends in the business then ,one used to go to Berbice with a truck.

When the vehicle was stopped at the toll plaza on the road from Berbice and seized because it contained flour, it could only mean that the flour was illegal because flour was a contraband item. If it wasn’t a contraband the vehicle wouldn’t have been seized because the flour could have been acquired legally in Berbice.

Lemme help y'all out. In 1980 the PNC government imported 300 LADA cars from the former Soviet Union. As a freelance journalist that year I interviewed Stanley Whyte, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Trade, on the subject of the LADA cars. After that year until Burnham's demise in 1985, at party-to-party level the Communist Party of the Soviet Union donated a few LADA cars to both the PPP and the PNC. The 1980 transaction involving the 300 was done at a government-to-government level.

The state-owned GUYANA GAJRAJ imported the LADAS for the government. I interviewed the general manager of Guyana GAJRAJ too but his name slips me at the moment.

Cut to the chase!   If it was not banned, why was it considered “contraband”.  Look it up!In the past and almost up to the 1980s, most of the motor vehicles imported into Guyana were new. Most vehicles were imported from western countries such as the United Kingdom, the United States and Germany. During the times of extreme foreign currency shortages in the 1970s and 1980s, under special arrangements, Lada vehicles were imported from Russia and large Tata buses were imported from India. Before Guyana tried the Socialist experiment where the state took over the ownership and control of the national economy, three or four of the largest companies including Bookers were the main motor vehicle importers. Since the vehicles imported were almost all new, they gave warranties for a year and since they had mechanical workshop facilities, they were easily able to repair faults and damages to vehicles. They also carried an adequate supply of spare parts; the situation today is very different from the picture we have described. The nearest to these colonial companies at the present time is Beharry Auto Sales.

Who imported that Studebaker car that Burnham bought and never paid a cent for allowing it to be seized by the importer?

Reading the incoherent Mumbo Jumbo , is distasteful ,give the years when this occurred, under what arrangements.. like the Tata Buses.

Burnham started the Nationalization of Industries in the mid 70's , shortly after he became ill, then some of his crazy ideas started , that was short lived.

Posted are some info on this thread.

Stop deflecting!  If flour was not banned, why was it considered “contraband”?

The cars I mentioned to show to make point on forex in the 70’s.

And stop pretending, the popular cars for the PNC were Austin Maxi, Mitsubishi Galant and Lancer imported by Gajraj!

Anyway, don’t deflect, why was flour considered contraband?
