Dr. David Hinds’ Statement on the murder of Political Activist Courtney Crum Ewing

Let us not be drawn into any form of ethnic revenge or tit for tat.

Tonight Guyana has crossed yet another dangerous line. A mere 48 hours after a former Head of Government and State publicly suggested to his successor that governance in Guyana should include “kicking some asses,” an activist known for his anti-government protest was shot dead while walking the streets of his community urging his fellow citizens to come out and vote in the upcoming elections. The barefaced murder of Courtney Crum-Ewing must now alert us that Guyana has become a semi-fascist state where protest by ordinary citizens is punishable by summary execution. This is not the first murder in recent times of an ordinary citizen exercising his or her right to protest against the current government; three years ago three protestors at Linden were shot dead by police while protesting against a proposed government electricity hike. Other anti-government activists, notably Mark Benschop and columnist Freddie Kissoon have been physically attacked. This murder also has echoes of the assassination a decade ago of known anti-government activist, Ronald Waddel.

A few weeks ago, I had begun to warn that this upcoming election would bring out the worst in the PPP’s ethnic arsenal, but I was quickly dismissed as a pessimist who is too preoccupied with race. The PPP cannot escape responsibility for Crum-Ewing’s murder. Political rhetoric matters. The atmosphere that was generated by the theatrics and rhetoric of PPP leaders at Babu John on Sunday is tantamount to a license to wage war. The “kick some asses” statement and its subsequent endorsement by other PPP leaders, in our charged ethnic and political environment, is an expression of political pugilism that could only lead to mayhem. When this is coupled with the clearly expressed ethnic identity of the PPP, the battle lines around the upcoming elections are clearly drawn.

The PPP, already with the blood of the Linden martyrs on its hands, have now claimed another innocent victim. Another father, son, brother and freedom fighter has fallen victim to the insatiable lust for power by the ruling clique. As someone who has been speaking up about African Guyanese victimhood, I am compelled to appeal to African Guyanese, in this moment of murder, the murder of another Black brother, to remain focused.

Let the murder of one of our brothers strengthen our resolve to rid ourselves of this modern day tyranny. Let us not be drawn into any form of ethnic revenge or tit for tat. Let us instead use Courtney’s body as a guiding compass to the ballot boxes on May 11. That is what the brother died on the frontline urging us to do. Let us not touch one East Indian man, woman or child. They are as much victims of the political depravity as the rest of us. Let us raise Black dignity to its highest peak and show the world that blood shedding in the quest for political power is not part of our world view. Let us show those who shed our blood that we are ahead of them; that we are militants for racial peace, justice, equality and sisterhood/brotherhood.

To our East Indian brethren, I appeal to you to disassociate yourselves from bloodletting for political power. Turn your face away from murderous packs. Reach for your nobleness and help rid Guyana of the scourge that has been heaped on us. Do not take responsibility for Crum Ewing’s murder. Join us on May 11 to deliver our country from the depths.

Anti-government protestor assassinated

March 11, 2015 | By | Filed Under News

Opposition political activist, Courtney Crum-Ewing, well known for his one-man protests, was shot dead last evening at Third Avenue, Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara (EBD) while urging frontpage

residents to vote against the ruling party in the upcoming General and Regional elections on May 11. The 40-year-old Crum-Ewing of Golden Grove, EBD, was shot about five times. The shooting is believed to have occurred sometime between 19:40 to 20:00 hrs. Police in a statement said that Crum-Ewing was walking along the roadway at Third Avenue when a car with four men drove up from which shots were discharged at him, “after which the men escaped”. Up to press time, the police were hunting for a silver Toyota Premio which is said to be the car used by the gunmen to kill the father of three. The car was last seen in Leopold Street, in Georgetown. Minutes before he was killed, Crum-Ewing, who made the news for carrying out his one-man protest in front of the Carmichael Street, Georgetown office of Attorney General, Anil Nandlall, late last year, was reportedly

Intertwining former Head of Government is absolutely unwarranted to this unfortunate incident of Courtney Crum-Ewing.

As I see it, Bharrat Jagdeo and Anil Nandlall are the intellectual authors of Courtney Crum-Ewing's assassination.

The Ministry of Home Affairs statement admits that the killing of Crum-Ewing "might be possibly initiated by those who may have a political agenda."

No thinking person will believe that APNU+AFC wanted to kill an anti-PPP protestor.

"Only the Ballot will stop the Bullet," says Nigel Hughes.

Courtney Crum-Ewing's murder will galvanize voters to reject the PPP on May 11.

There will be a closing of ranks and a big turnout at polling stations on May 11.

PNC "sacrificed" one of their own to mobilize their base.

PNC is a violent Nationalist Party and will unleash even more violence before this election is over and expand the violence during election night.

A violent PNC will never change and Moses and Rumjhaat will dip their hands in PNC blood in order to be officially initiated into the PNC.

Moses Nagamootoo says: "I last saw the activist at about 4 pm today, outside my law chambers. He was wearing yellow shirt, and has a Guyana Flag on a short pole that was stuck into his back pocket. He was speaking with a person or persons in a white car that had stopped on North Road, just opposite the St. George's Cathedral.
My staffers invited me to look at him from my office window, after I heard what appeared to be a loud speaker, booming a message for people to vote. One clerk said that the announcer was calling for people to vote "APNU+AFC" - Guyana's combined opposition.
Just over a week ago, Courtney Crum Irwing donated a bullhorn to the AFC.
His assassination came just as despised former president Jagdeo was explaining his "kick some ass" exhortation to contain the political opposition. jagdeo, in an incendiary speech Sunday, made unfounded statements that mainly Afro-Guyanese led opposition had advised in 2011 to "get these coolie people" out of government, which was widely condemned in Guyana as racist incitement by the former president, known for what has been described as his "cuss-down politics".
It was reported that whilst Courtney was calling on neighbors to vote, a car drove up, and shots rang out. The protestor was shot in the back of the head.
..The cold-bloodied, cowardly murder of the protestor could take Guyana to a new phase in its descent into authoritarian rule."

Moses has officially endorsed a PNC "sacrifice" of one of their own.

This will backfire on the PNC.

Luckily, not many people will buy your theory.

BTW, what do you mean by calling the PNC a "nationalist party"?

Define "nationalist", please. The definitions I got from my political science courses don't seem to fit the PNC or APNU+AFC.

So tell me, how does risking the prospect of retaliatory attacks by a PNC supporters help the PNC.  How does creating an atmosphere of panic where Indians fear the prospect of retaliation help the AFC.

It is a known fact that many Indians see the PPP like a dysfunctional and bad mummy.  Even though they hate her because of how abusive she is, they flock to her when panicked.

It is the PPP which wants to create this environment in the hope that they get the Indians back to the plantation.

What makes this strategy fall flat is not every Indian buys this, and the non Indian vote, now just over 50%, definitely will not.

Mr.Hinds likes to jump to conclusions of a racial nature.

Truth be told, Hinds gave the PNC Burnhamite hell and opposed the dictatorship at much personal price.

However, Hinds tends to see racial demons behind every tree.

You cannot make such statements as he has made unless you get evidence that this was a political hit.The same nonsense going on with the Rodney enquiry where it's all conjecture and rehashing of the context of Burnhamism.  No one has said or can say for sure that the PNC did it, although we widely believe so.

Two people were gunned down yesterday- 1 black and 1 Indian.  Nobody is talking about the Indian guy- his life does not matter?

You simply have to wait to get more details from the investigations.

However, we have lost a strong supporter for justice, and his killers will go to hell.

OK Jay let us agree on a number of things.

1.  The 1962-64 struggle had NOTHING to do with race.

2.  There was NO racism directed against Indians under the Burnham era.

When you admit to that then I might concede that what Hinds says lacks merit.

But given that I suspect I know what your response will be I will suggest to you that you are a closet case Indocentric with a personal gripe with the PPP.  Your shock will be when blacks resist any attempt by folks like you to continue the status quo, which sees the ethnic exclusion of non Indians.

The fact that you call the murder and assault against Lindeners "legitimate" reveals to me exactly what you are.

One killing was a robbery, an almost daily event in Guyana.  Rohee will only care when he or other elites, now protected by private armies, become threatened.

The other was clearly political.

So what are you squealing about?

FM

The other was clearly political.

The Police has not disclosed any more details, and here you are in America and you know "clearly."  The Police should have been issuing bulletins on how investigations are progressing.

The Linden riots was simply bullyism. Rioting for lower electricity bills is not a human right. Burning schools and govt buildings, blocking vehicles from crossing, and burning vehicles are not legitimate actions. You know if that had happened in the USA, they would have jailed them by the bus loads. I don't condone bullyism as human rights.  There is a line.

Stop the nonsense about ethnic exclusion of non-Indians.  We have gone over the facts that non-Indians control everything in the Guyana state system.  That's not conjecture; that's facts. We can almost say the PPP is in power, not in office.  The PPP's problem is that it never implemented diversity policies, but instead focused on how to steal money through NICIL and other shady deals.

I am for balanced, fair policies and systems for all.  Hopefully, the Coalition is a good first step, and we have some honorable leaders to deal with.

You call yourself religious and you're such a bare faced liar?

There was no rioting for lower electricity bills, moron. There was a peaceful protest against the increase in electricity rates. The rioting started after the PPP sent in their jackboots and they shot and killed protesters. What did you expect, that they were going to hold hands and sing Kumbuya after their people were shot down in the streets?
