In a ceremony at The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) University in New Delhi, India, Guyana’s former President, Bharrat Jagdeo, on 1st February received an honorary Doctorate of Philosophy from Dr. RK Pachauri, Nobel Prize Laureate and the Chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and Chancellor of TERI University. Speaking before the ceremony, Dr Pachauri said β€œThere are very few Heads of Government in the world who understand the scientific, economic and social dimensions of climate change like President Jagdeo. His sense of the global injustice that climate change represents is combined with a very rare understanding of key issues, and a global vision of suitable solutions. What he has achieved in Guyana proves that developing countries can lead the way towards developing and implementing climate solutions.

Let us ALL congratulate the GREAT DR AGAIN. yippie cheers yippie

Former president Bharrat Jagdeo has been conferred with an Honourary Doctorate in Philosophy by the Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) University in New Delhi, India, his third such recognition.

According to a release from the Office of the President on Friday, he was presented with the honour on Wednesday by Dr. R.K Pachauri, Nobel Prize Laureate and the Chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and Chancellor of TERI University.

β€œThere are very few Heads of Government in the world who understand the scientific, economic and social dimensions of climate change like President Jagdeo. His sense of the global injustice that climate change represents is combined with a very rare understanding of key issues, and a global vision of suitable solutions,” Dr Pachauri is reported as saying.

He went on to add now that Jagdeo is no longer president he hopes β€œhis vision and skills’ could be deployed to an even greater extent to help the world face up to the climate challenges confronting it.

β€œPresident Jagdeo as a global leader of rare distinction must remain in the vanguard of global actions for meeting the challenge of climate change,” the statement relays from the IPCC Chairman.

In accepting the award Jagdeo reportedly thanked the chairman and the university for the honour and for the work they do in the area of climate change.

β€œClimate change is a problem of existential proportions for large numbers of the world’s most vulnerable people. Progressive citizens, organisations and governments in every part of the world must keep up the pressure on those who try to stop us from taking the action we need to take to avert climate catastrophe.”

Jagdeo was named as one of Time Magazine’s Heroes of the Environment in 2008 and received a Champion of the Earth Award from the United Nations Environment Programme in 2010. He served on the United Nations’ Secretary General’s Advisory Group on Climate Finance in 2010 and is a Board Member of the Global Green Growth Institute.

In 2010, he was conferred with an Honourary Doctorate by the People’s Friendship University of Russia and in 2011 he also received an Honourary Doctorate from the DY Patil University of Mumbai, India.

He is currently in India representing Guyana at the Delhi Sustainable Development Summit 2012 (DSDS 2012).

It is his first international engagement on Guyana’s behalf since demitting office last year.

I would like to c the poorest of Guyana improve their standard of living.

I would like to c crime abated. Then I KNOW the talented Guyanese would rise in their society.

I would like to c excellent family values promoted by the GOG.

India, the country where for millenia ppl are borne in poverty and die in it without an opportunity to do better in life.

Polticians from every country around the world steal, in some form or another, from their State Coffers. Name one that didn't do it. At least Jagdeo may have (and I don't have evidence to prove it) but he used a lot of it to develop the country, unlike Forbes Burnham, Hamilton Green and company who stole everything and left the till empty and destroyed Guyana.

There was a time it was honouring to have one. In todays world, it has become easy to get one. Especially for Guyanese. It seems the recepients are on a race-especially with PPP cronies in professorships around the world.

Imagine, one was given to a Guyanese who manufactures RUM.
