AN ELEVEN-YEAR-OLD schoolgirl, who drank a quantity of poisonous substance, died Monday night at Suddie Hospital on the Essequibo Coast. It is reported Shivan Singh, of Reliance Village, who attended C.V. Nunes Primary School at Anna Regina, committed suicide in tragic circumstances after she failed her end of term examination. She had, previously, told relatives that a teacher deducted marks from her test papers which caused her to fail and she took it on while other pupils taunted her about her failure. Reports said she drank the poison on Sunday, while she was at home with her brother. Her father, who was in the backdam looking after his rice crop when the incident occurred, returned home to find his daughter in a helpless condition and rushed her to the Suddie Hospital where she was admitted and died Monday night at around 21:00 hrs. The girl would have written the Grade Six examination on Wednesday and Thursday. Reports said the childβs parents are separated. Meanwhile, police are investigating the death. |

This is very unfortunate. If the teacher dealt unfairly with this kid, the MOE should do some sensitivity training because these kids minds are very fragile.
