MUMBAI: The last rites of actor Farooq Sheikh will be performed at a burial ground at Four Bungalows, Andheri, on Monday evening. He will be laid to rest near the grave of his mother Farida, who passed away in February 2011.

"His wife and children will accompany the remains from Dubai in the afternoon. People who wish to pay their last respects can do so at his apartment at Highland Park in Lokhandwala Complex between 5.30pm and 7pm," said Feroze Abbas Khan, Sheikh's friend who directed him in the play 'Tumhari Amrita'.

The actor was the eldest of five siblings. He was born March 25, 1948, to advocate Mustafa Sheikh and a Parsi mother, Farida. The family owns 'zamindari' in its native Gujarat but has lived in Mumbai for around six decades. Writer Javed Siddiqi recalled, "Farooq lived in Nagpada while I stayed in Byculla. Our fathers were friends so I knew him long before he became an actor."

The finality of the tragedy hit home once Sheikh's younger brothers arrived from Gujarat. Sunday afternoon, they were overseeing preparations for the remains to be viewed at the community hall in the building compound. They requisitioned chairs, mattresses and white cloth for the shamiana.

Neighbours were overwhelmed with grief at the sight. Ophthalmologist Jagdish Shah, brother of director Kundan Shah, knows the family since 12 years. Sheikh stayed in the A wing of Highland Park before moving to the B wing in 2009. "We would often meet in the elevator. The next time I step in I will miss his warm 'adaab' and friendly smile that had become part of my routine. He had brought both his daughters to me for mild eye problems. I was also a guest on his TV show 'Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai' that featured my brother, and he calmed my stage fright," Dr Shah says. "Sheikh always wore white. I feel he could do so because he was such a pure soul."

Around 1 km away, staff at the Four Bungalows Kabrastan had been alerted of Monday's arrival. "Sheikh Sahab's mother is buried beneath that tall tree. We will try to find space nearby or within the same plot," said caretaker Khatija Bi Shah. The actor's brother-in-law Nazeer Sheikh is a trustee of the graveyard and will prepare the final resting place for one of India's best loved artistes.

The veteran actor’s most recent film appearances – β€˜Club 60’ along with Sarika, which released earlier this month. The film, which was the tale of a doctor couple who lose their only child, was rated 2 and half stars by Indian Express critic Shubra Gupta. β€œI would recommend 'Club 60', because it brings into the frame an age group euphemistically called the 'silvers', and by touching a chord with its performances. Farooque Shaikh is as solid as ever,” wrote Shubra in her review. [Express archive photo)
