BBC's Catharina Moh on Paul Walker's career

US actor Paul Walker, who starred in the Fast & Furious series of action films, has been killed in a car crash in California.

Walker, 40, was a passenger in a Porsche sports car driven by a friend - who also died - when it crashed north of Los Angeles.

Walker was said to be attending a charity event at the time.

He starred in all but one of the films in the Fast & Furious franchise, the sixth of which opened in May.

Walker also starred in the suspense drama Hours, a movie that is set for release this month.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's department said the crash happened in the community of Valencia.

It said deputies found a car engulfed in flames when they responded to a report of a collision. Two people found in the car were pronounced dead at the scene.

Images showed the burned-out wreckage of a red Porsche by the side of the road.

"It is with a truly heavy heart that we must confirm that Paul Walker passed away today in a tragic car accident while attending a charity event for his organisation Reach Out Worldwide," the statement on the actor's Facebook page said.

Looking at the wreck, I would say that the car was travelling at more than 100MPH at the time. His friend was probably showing off and then lost control. The Porsche 911 is very easy to slide sideways. The older versions even more so. They are a killer in wet weather when turning corners or bends at high speed.

I drive a turbo charged and powerful car myself and know how much concentration is required to place the front wheels in the right place to avoid crashing. I don't think the driver was as good as he thought he was.

A pitty about Walker. If he had been driving he would probably still be alive.

RIP Paul.

People who cannot drive should stay out of a car. Crashing into a lamppost is for drunks and druggies. I can only assume that the driver was drunk. Nowadays, 100 mph in a car is controllable if you know how to drive.

Pity about Paul, his death was fast and furious.

A lot of ppl can drive fast in a straight line. But turning corners and into bends require a lot of skill if driving at speed. Going by the picture, I would say that he turned into a bend of tried to avoid another car. The Porsche has obviously slid sideways and hit the lamp post sideways. At that sort of speed the gasoline tank will be inside the crumple zone and burst open.

It's a bad thing to show off how good a driver you think you are, when you have passengers inside the car. There is always the chance that there is another idiot coming from the other direction with the same mentality.

In this tragic photograph actor Paul Walker, best known for his role in the Fast & Furious action movies, is seen stepping into his friend Roger Rodas' Porsche GT just 30 minutes before the horrendous crash in which the pair lost their lives.

The high-powered super-car, which was being driven by Rodas, burst into flames after it crashed into a pole and tree in Santa Clarita, north of Los Angeles, at 3:30pm on Saturday.

The county coroner has revealed that the bodies of Walker and and his friend/business partner were so badly burned in the horrific incident that they are currently unidentifiable.

The L.A. County Coroner has requested dental records for both victims before they can identify the bodies. Autopsies on both bodies have been delayed until later this week, reports TMZ.

Walker, 40, who appeared in five of the six films about illegal street racing and heists, had been at an event for his charity Reach Out Worldwide before deciding to take the car, a cherry-red Porsche Carrera, out for a drive with his friend.

The fundraiser, to benefit victims of Typhoon Haiyan, had been taking place in a race car shop near the scene of the crash.

shut you rass....a seasoned race car driver was driving. Streets are not race tracks. There are too many eventualities to contend with. He was stupid enough to try and so died.

There is a report that the power steering malfunctioned on the car.

The trouble-prone Porsche that “Fast & Furious” star Paul Walker was riding in when he died in a crash suffered a mechanical failure that was likely caused by a power steering fluid leak, a new report said Monday.

Sources connected to Always Evolving – the auto shop co-owned by Walker and Porsche driver Roger Rodas — told the celebrity Web site TMZ that they saw “evidence of a fluid burst and subsequent fluid trail before the skid marks at the accident scene.”

The sources said that the lack of skid marks until just before the point of impact suggests the driver didn’t have control of the speeding car’s steering.

Walker was just tagging along with a pal for a test-drive in a trouble-prone Porsche when they crashed and died, a new report said.

The 40-year-old actor had shown up at Always Evolving — a high-end car shop run by Walker’s buddy, former race-car driver Roger Rodas, 38 — for a fund-raiser for typhoon victims in the Philippines, according to TMZ.

But when he got to there, he saw Rodas trying to help employees figure out what was wrong with a red Porsche Carrera GT that kept stalling.

Rodas was behind the wheel, backing the pricy car out of the garage, when Walker hopped into the passenger seat and the pair took off to trouble-shoot, sources said.

They were returning from a 20-minute spin when they tragically crashed — just 500 yards from the shop.

Cops said Rodas, 38, had been speeding.

The 911 configuration, upon which the Carrera is also based, has been a design problem from day one. Porsche has made all sorts of mods to make those cars drivable, but I have never felt comfortable about their drive.

Mind you, I have been thinking of getting a Porsche Cayenne, but I am worried my neighbours might think I am a drug dealer or something along those lines.
