Killed my ubuntu installation going from cuttlefish to dingo. It hung on the bloody Microsoft EULA ( on some driver) would not let me close it and continue and killed my machine. I have to spend the whole day moving data to External drives. I also have to make a boot USB that will boot on my alienware machine.

Here is a good boot repair.
Also you have to be careful upgrading, stick with the LTS

the .04s are LTS. 19.1 is coming in October. I tried every repair possibility even going in with terminal but I am stuck. It is my game machine so I am trying to get my saved files and my bookmarks. I do not want to start over with some games especially the bethesda games which I have been playing for more than a year.
If I could get the network going at terminal I would be fine. I give up and will do a clean install. Will have to spend weeks getting all the packages I had on it and use frequently. My windows 10 partition is also screwed. I have the drive out and is using my surface to move the date to external drives.

The boot repair should help, i have run in to problems and was able to recover operation with disc. The current LTS version is 19.04
There is another trick , you wont lose any files, check post above the last https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1435000

Dingo is LTS. I do not have a CD drive also the alien ware machine does not even want to boot from a USB. I have to buy a USB CD drive. The failure is catastrophic. Even my windows repair partition is gone. Luckily I created a repair CD when I had an external drive. I give it to a friend who had a similar problem. Meanwhile I am backing up....

Ok cool, you will solve the problem.
I know how to solve it. I just wish I had backed up before trying to upgrade. It was supposed to be simple.
Now I have to find Opera bookmark doe example. I do not know where Ubuntu stores the file.
It will be days before I am up and running and weeks before I get all the shells, repositories and apps installed as I had it before.
saved the day, not by my own genius but happenstance. After a few times going through the package restore menu it booted. I only had a few things to finish copying so did that and I re installed everything clean. I took picture of the applications menu so I know what to install. Disco dingo is ready now for apps!

Great you resolved the problem. As mentioned before i use Mate version, have you checked out the software Gimp, very powerful when understand to use.For personal use, don't think will ever use windows again, still have win 10, find it very odd when periodically use for the updates.
Almost finished. All my troubles came from not paying attention. To move through the text fields on the EULA you use the tab and accept via the space bar.
I use GIMP. I started when Adobe moved to packaging Illustrator and Photoshop in suites costing over 2 grand. I use GIMP with Inkspot ( for vectors and Scribus for final layout. Other open source layout program can be used but you do need one for crop marks so as to get the bleed right especially if the final product is going to a commercial printer.
I am documenting my install. First to see if I can create a terminal script to automate my rebuild in case I crash again and also to pass on the terminal commands friend who may want to install a package.
I use many desktops but seldom Mate. It uses the older desktop structure on Gnome 2 and familiar to windows users . I like Gnome3, KDE Plasma,Cinnamon, Budgie and Xubuntu. I usually have about seven installed and change them up daily. It is more to know them and to have a feel my computer is different everyday.
Stormy, all of this is like French to me but kudos ð to you for getting through it.

Windows is far harder than this and much more expensive to use. If you can use windows you can use this. It is far more logical and has lots more options on how to get things done...all for free.

Since all I do with my laptop is surf the internet, maybe I should convert it to Ubuntu.
If I donât like it, would I be able to revert back to Windows?

Ubuntu can be installed along with Windows, lots of info out there how to do such. There are different flavors you can choose, look for the versions with LTS (Long Term Service)
Django, do using Ubuntu allow excel functions and so on?
one more question. Whatâs the advantage of using Ubuntu to Windows.
I am not a tech person but knowledge is gud.

My son said choose the LTS.

Excel per se does not run unless it is run using Wine ( a windows emulator). There are many very powerful spread sheet software that are excel compatible what exists that can do the work.
The advantage of Ubuntu over windows is that it is free, it is faster, it is more secure and it is far easier to use. Windows software has gone to yearly leases where if you do not pay you have a crippled computer. Ubuntu will even run on practically any machine you have junked in the garage. It does not need much hardware power.
Imagine licensing 10 pieces of software per year and not able to use the historical data and you soon realize windows is a financial trap and on top of that it is crap that kills a machine.
Ubuntu is one flavor of linux. There are many flavors. Some are also commercial. Ubuntu is freeware. Most governments are now migrating to linux. It makes no sense to use windows.

Thank You!! Very informative.
I look up GIMP .. lots of features that are free. I pay US $59. Per month for Adobe / we use illustrator for mock up presentation.
Cool stuff.. thanks again.

Gimp runs on windows. It is as powerful as photoshop with a bit more control if you take the time to learn it. Inkscape also runs on windows and it is good for design like illustrator. It is easier to use than illustrator. There are possibly hundreds of others that will do the same.
I should add, Ubuntu is far more prettier than windows. The graphics are crisper and things are arranged logically. Another advantage is you get very many desktops to chose from and not stuck with the same one all the time.

Ubuntu comes with "Open Office" which can open exel, word ...etc. As Stormy mentioned, i find it easier to use than windows, plus there are lots of open software.
Open office can also use on Windows.
I used windows 7 at work, support will end soon. I will switch to Ubuntu , except one piece of software built with MS Access which runs on XP, i will have to continue using. I have one XP computer that's acts as a server, and two other Win 7 computers that runs XP as virtual machines, so i can use Win 7 and XP on the same computer.
