Watch for how Eric Spoelstra responds to the high pick-n-roll involving Duncan or Splitter with Tony Parker. The Heat has had success with other teams' pick-n-roll, but will have to do a better job with the Spurs.

Watch how Pops use Dioaw instead of Splitter when the Heat go small and spread the floor, and especially if their perimeter shooters are hitting threes.

Coaching adjustment will play a great part in this series.

The Heat will win game two. Somehow.

The Heat needs to do two things to be in a position to win the series:

  • Protect the 3-point shooting. I heard a statistic that they are 15th of the 16 playoff teams defending the 3-pointer, and one signature of their past playoff successes was their 3-point defense.
  • Protect the inside. The one area you beat the Heat is around the rim. I mentioned yesterday about the high pick-n-roll where the big man slides to the hoop. Birdman and Haslem and Bosh are not that tall or fast enough dealing with a rolling Splitter and Duncan. The Heat gave up a lot of points in game 1 and they have to bring the opponent's scoring to Heat-like levels in the high-80s or low-90s.

Both teams are excellent passing teams and have smart offensive IQ. Who defends the other's offensive strength will be in a position to win games.

In as much as I mentioned the Spurs merely held serve, it is tough to be down 0 - 2 as you will then have to win 4 of the next 5 games with two being on the Spurs court. Miami has to win tonight. Ii know they've come back from 0 -2 to win 4 straight, but this team is not the hungry one 2 years ago.

After 3 quarters the Heat has brought its "A" game and the spurs are just playing steady and they're still up by 1. Maybe Miami's defensive adjustment has had something to do with the "steady" and not "spectacular" Spurs play. They'rer picking up the pick-n-roll higher up and switching a smaller player thus leaving a better matchup at the rim or forcing a perimeter pass. They're then closing out on the shooter.

Will the Spurs up its lethargic game in the 4th quarter? Can the Heat keep up its "A" game and defensive discipline when the legs start to tire?

That's why this is fascinating.

Spurs missed 4 free throws in the last 2 minutes or so. Can't win like that. Looks like last year game 6 all over again. Duncan was not involved in the last 4 offensive possessions (he was on the floor though). In the 4th quarter no one could box out Birdman. James is a terrific defender and with him on Parker that's the time to make Parker a perimeter threat and keep LeBron out of the defensive rotation. Miami also got all the loose balls - by hustle and by the bounce of the ball (gotta have that element of luck too - but it should even out).

I like Pops but if this is the one game in the series where he goes to sleep, then fine. But this is this year's last year game 6 for him. And score a big one for Chalmers. Give Wade kudos for the phantom flop on the Ginobli swipe at the ball that made him sit on the bench in a crucial spell when he was hot. Looks to me that Miami outsmarted the Spurs with their unconventional offense (Chalmers and Wade). Don't forget that LeBron mugged Tim Duncan and that resulted in a technical for Duncan.
