Some peeps used bamboo or wire to make the hoop. Here dem attach it to a rod and dem call it Bird Net Catcher. We used it mainly to catch shrimps and crabs.
No need for net to ketch crabs..one visit to Garmont will do the job

Crabs?? Wow..u mean sheriga??
βholesβ n the shrimp nets(castnets) much smallerβ¦We used this to wade in the trench to catch patwa, sunfish n even hassar..the holes in net were a bit bigger.
I rem my bro or even my mom used to stir water near to hassar nest while another person stood by with the ghir ghira..oh boy, the hassar used to jump out of the nest n into the net!!
abt that vine..wish i knew wht it was called..it grew on water side by mangrove trees..flexible like balata..soit was bent easily n secured with wire.
the same vine was used to make βmaswah., the handmade βcontraptionβ to catch the sweet water shrimps. A piece of ricebag was cut into a square..2 pieces of the vines were crossed to make n X n the ends were tied to the 4 corners of the bag..forming something like a boat. ..a piece of rope was Tied where the vine intersected n was used to lower itinto the trench..the other end was tied to a tree on the dam. A rock was placed in the maswah(the bottom ) to make it sink in the water. We added BOOCIE or cooked rice , put black sage stems/bushes to cover the βfeedβ. This was used to trap the shrimps or patwas from jumping out of the maswah. This was my βjob; in the backdam whn i was a kid..to set maswah n catch shrimps..i used to set abt 12 in all..spaced out well . I used to lift them out every 30-45 mins , removed my catch n set them backβ¦at the end day i had a full bucket of shrimps , lot of patwas n sunfishes n lotof sellehbeh!! ( aka kakabelly i think ) ..i saved a few for bait for my βhookβ to catch the hoories n yarrow to roast n make choka !
Notw..It is weird that i only ate hassar n sunfish n of course the shrimps!!
small days..so much fun!!! i stopped going to the backdam after i started high sch..fun days were over..

Crab marching goes over to September sometimes. There is also the Bok Crab, a bit smaller than Bunduri which are really big and blue. Bok crabs are reddish and it does not shave its hairy legs.
Over here dem a call chimpta, tongs and whereas Flip-Flops are thongs.
