GLAMOROUS DIVA OF YESTERYEAR: REKHA

They have never been seen on screen since 1981, the year Silsila released. But their love has remained as hot as ever, if only for the gossipmongers and tabloids.

And as the speculations go on whether the two will come together for a film again, here's wishing the ultimate romantic couple a very happy birthday as Rekha turns 55 and Amitabh turns 67 a day later.

And then the stranger, the 'pardesiya' came closer. Mr Natwarlal was a good movie for sure. But the chemistry that the duo shared overshadowed everything else. Their songs together including 'pardesiya yeh sach hai piya' was a chartbuster and a hit due to their cute chemistry.

In fact the song was like the story of their lives. Suddenly from being strangers, they had come closer personally. And yes, people had started talking about the two.

Many till date refuse to watch Muqaddar Ka Sikandar because they hate to see their superstar Bachchan die on screen. But the story of this one man, a failure in love, was an instant hit with the masses.

What was interesting was the fact that the storyline as far as Amitabh and Rekha are concerned was very much akin to their off screen lives. He was married. In the movie he was in love with Rakhi. And Rekha was the 'other woman' madly in love with him. Well, in the movie, she did give her life for him which well, as we all know did not happen in reality. Rekha will celebrates her 55th birthday on October 10, this year.

Silsila, the tale of two lovers who meet after long years to find their lives shattered by the smouldering embers of their past romance was an instant hit – partly because of the brilliance of the film and mostly because of the sparks that flew between the two actors on screen.

How can we ever forget the song Yeh Kahaan Aa Gaye Hum immortalised by Lata Mangeshkar and Amitabh Bachchan in which the sultry Rekha wearing a red salwar kameez and red lipstick almost burnt the screen while reading the love sonnets written to her by Amitabh.

Decades later, on a film awards night, when Lata Mangeshkar sang the song again with Amitabh reciting the meaningful lines 'Main Aur Meri Tanhayee' in his rich baritone, we all couldn't help but look at the ravishing Rekha sitting in the crowd.

The sizzling affair between 'Superstar of the Millennium' Amitabh Bachchan and the Bollywood's eternal temptress Rekha remains unparalleled. The affair provided enough material for gossip tabloids to run their business for a few good years - that is not surprising given Rekha's penchant for loving her men with wild abandon. Amitabh of course was not just her devine madness- but also he was the madness of the masses and had a 'basa-basaya ghar' with doting wife Jaya, children and parents. Although, Amitabh reportedly had a soft corner, but he did not require any negative publicity to tarnish his squeaky-clean angry-youngman image. The chemistry between the two was very evident on screen. Their love story began on the sets of 'Do Anjaane' - the second film that they did together. The pair provided hit after hit together - 'Khoon Pasina', 'Ganga Ki Saugandh', 'Suhaag', 'Muqaddar Ka Sikandar', 'Ram Balram' and 'Mr. Natwarlal' amongst others. The on-screen chemistry generated in the many films they made together, led many to suspect that there was a real life romance happening. In an unbeliveable casting coup by Yash Chopra, Rekha appeared alongside both Amitabh and his wife Jaya, in the love triangle that was 'Silsila' (1981)! Yash Chopra's this film was their last film together and it captured the real life Rekha-Amit-Jaya infidelity triangle.

Recently we have seen Rekha donning mangal sutra, and sindoor at an event they both attended, why did Rekha wear the sindoor at that event where her former lover was present? Could she be hinting at somethingâ€Ķ has Rekha secretly got married with someone? Or did she indeed get married with Amitabh Bachchan in the 70s and still regards herself as his wife?

Now that is the qusstion: will we have an answer?

You recently shot a film with Hema Malini and Rishi Kapoor...

Yes, Saadiyaan. It's a very interesting film on Indo-Pak relations.

I also completed a film called Aaj Phir Jeene Ki Tamanna Hai. I play a modern day devdasi, a Maharashtrian woman. It in many ways describes my life. It's Shatrughan Sinha's production. He's playing my husband.

Why are you so often cast as a courtesan and the Other Woman?

Out of my 250 films, I've done 180 as a wife. Why haven't you noticed that?

Your recent films have been disappointments?

Recent, as in 20 years, 30 years? They might have been box office disappointments. But does that stop you from feeling the way you feel about me and the way I feel about myself.

Any message for Amitabh Bachchan on his birthday?

There's a useful media-fobbing term that I will use for the first time. No comment.

He's a national icon and your most successful costar...

What can I say about him without sounding repetitive? I feel such joy that he has given so much to the industry. I feel so blessed that I've learned so much for him. I can't put my feelings into words.

Is there anything that you'd like to change in your life?

No, because I haven't allowed myself to be affected by the ugliness. I do feel the pain. But I don't wallow in it.

Nah she did not Alex, Big Grin

She has had her flings and enjoyed it, and she has come to accept that whatever will be will be, apart from being in one of the top ten actresses for all times but as she says "As long as you are alive, you have a chance to have a future. At least there is hope. Not that I see what I see around me and feel happy about it. But I have hope."

AMITABH BACHCHAN SAYS HE IS NOT WORKING WITH REKHA

Mumbai, (IANS) Bollywood icon Amitabh Bachchan has rubbished reports that he is teaming up with Rekha in the Disney-produced film "Marma Yogi".

The news stating that the timeless Amitabh-Rekha pair was likely to come together again had been published in a national daily. The report, which had television channels going berserk, now turns out to be totally unfounded. "I've no clue what or which film you're talking about. This is utter rubbish," Amitabh told IANS, putting an end to all the speculation about the screen-pair coming together.

In fact, according to well informed sources, it's not just unikely but impossible that the pair, who made us swoon in innumerable films from "Do Anjaane" to "Silsila" will ever come together again.Years after "Silsila", the Amitabh-Rekha pair came together in unexpected ways when Rekha dubbed for both the leading ladies, Soundarya and Jaya Sudha, in the Amitabh starrer "Surayvansham".
