Philip Aaron "Phil" Edwards, MD (1907 â 1971) was a Canadian and Guyanese track and field athlete who competed in middle-distance events. Nicknamed the "Man of Bronze", he was Canada's most-decorated Olympian and the first Black Canadian man to win a trophy at what are now known as the Commonwealth Games. He was the first-ever winner of the Lou Marsh Trophy as Canada's top athlete. He went on to serve as a captain in the Canadian army and as a highly-regarded physician and expert of tropical diseases.
Edwards was born in Georgetown, British Guiana (now Guyana), to a lawyer who acted as his first running coach. [Wikipedia]
