would that really count as a goal, I will think the ball is no longer in play after he failed in the attempt

yes, it counts...if it went out of bounds, then it would not count
The lesson here is to always be aware on where your balls are heading.
I watched another in that group (10 smart penalty kicks..#6) where the guy ran to the ball..turned around and kicked it backward using his sole and scored.
Are those your boys in your profile Ray? they have grown a lot.
