EXCLUSIVE: When Hema Malini said 'NO' to Raj Kapoor for 'Satyam Shivam Sundaram'

Hema Malini, now, when looks back to reflect upon her long and flourishing career, feels bad about not getting an opportunity and privilege of working with the great showman of the Indian Cinema – Raj Kapoor, as a director. As we all know, Hema made her debut in Bollywood with ‘Sapno Ka Saudagar’, in 1968, in which she was paired with Raj Kapoor.

Interestingly, Zeenat Aman was not the first choice for 'Satyam Shivam Sundaram' as Raj Kapoor was very keen that Hema played Roopa’s part but it eventually went to Zeenat Aman. Reminisces Hema, “Raj Saab would bring up the topic time and again and we had several discussions but then he himself said, ‘You won’t be able to do what I want’. But he really wished from his heart that I do it but then I had to refuse the film.” Obviously, he knew that Hema would be uncomfortable with the idea of seducing the camera with her body. “Of course, he knew my image. Yet he offered me the role, he came and spoke to me hoping that I will say, ‘Yes’. Shashi and I would have made a great pair but sadly I couldn't do...”

The veteran actress further adds, “Those days there was this talk of him making 'Mera Naam Joker' Part 2 and he’d wanted me in that film, but the film never happened. I was also very keen to work with Raj Saab since he was a very passionate filmmaker, he wouldn’t bother about time or money spent on a project, it was just his passion.”

It’s a known fact that 'Satyam Shivam Sundaram' was a splendid showcase of Zeenat’s powers of seduction, her voice, her figure, and her limited acting potential, too. Says Hema, who's quite close to Zeenat, “Zeenat played the part so well. Bold, yes, and then it was done in the 70's...but she was beautiful. Till date nobody has done that kind of a role what Zeenat did. She had such a beautiful body.”

I enjoy every bit of my life: Hema Malini

Hema Malini

Hema Malini

Actress talks about her dance festival Jaya-Smriti, the joys of being a grandmother and her plans for Mathura

Dream Girl Hema Malini may have turned 67, but she still enthrals millions of her fans. The South Indian diva, who balances her roles as a granny, danseuse and politician, wants to promote talented dancers through Jaya-Smriti, a programme in memory of her mother. She speaks to Lipika Varma about her dream to provide a platform to budding talent.

Q) What’s your beauty mantra?
I am always happy. I have enjoyed all my roles as a mother, daughter, sister, wife and all were fulfilling. I don’t have a normal family life as I have always been busy, but I enjoy every bit of my life. Dance has supported me a lot.

Q) You are a granny now, how do you feel?

I didn’t know a new relationship could bring you so much happiness. I play with Darian every day and all my memories of my little girls come back to me. I was a working mother and one of my favourite memories is how they would come and hug me when I returned home.

Q) Why are you reviving Jaya-Smriti after two years?
My mother was a great art lover and she made me what I am today. Without dance, I would have never been Hema Malini. She wanted me to be a dancer. I was offered roles after people saw my performance.

Q) Will you be performing for Jaya-Smriti? Who all will be participating this year?
None of us will perform this year. Many beautiful dancers from Odisha, including Kelucharan Mohapatra’s granddaughter, will perform this year. A dancer from the Abruti organisation, which adopts children and trains them to dance, will also be performing for Jaya-Smriti.

Q) Who are your favourite dancers in Bollywood?

Deepika dances very well. Aishwarya performs Kathak exuberantly.

Q) Will your daughters take over the dancing reign of yours?
I have taught my daughters everything. They are dedicated. I am trying to preserve the culture and I want them to take over. I hope they do it. It has to be a natural process.

Q) What’s up on your production front?
You can’t make films now. I did a film Tell me Oh Khuda, but the director was not good. Dev saab, Guru Dutt and Ramesh Sippy all produced and directed movies, but now corporates have taken over and we have to depend on them.

Q) As a South Indian, how were your initial days in Bollywood?

The first 10 years of my life were in Delhi and we moved to Chennai as I wanted to be an actor and a dancer. When I became an actor, I shifted to Mumbai. In those days, I used to wear heavy Kancheevaram saris that my mom brought for me. Many women up North made fun of me, especially producers’ wives, who said, ‘Yeh Madrasi kya karegi?’

Q) Tell us about Dharmendra.
I am blessed to have him in my life. If I was married to someone else, I would be doing nothing. I have always been inspired by him.

Q) What are you doing for Mathura?
I am working hard for Mathura. People there are innocent. There’s no development as they have been looted for ages and no one has done anything for their well-being. I talked to the party higher-ups, and UP CM Akhilesh Yadav and I are trying to do something for their well-being.

It is necessary to preserve our classical dance forms: Hema Malini

Hema Malini, Hema Malini interview, Hema Malini news, Hema Malini classical dance, Hema Malini upcoming movies, Hema Malini politics, Hema Malini latest news, Hema Malini interview indian express, entertainment news

When asked about her evergreen pairing with Dharmendra, Hema Malini said, “We came together, acted together, delivered hits and are together. It is all destiny and nothing is planned.”

One of the finest exponents of Indian classical dance, Hema Malini is all set to reprise ‘Jaya Smriti’, an annual dance event held in memory of her late mother, Jaya Chakravarthy. At this event, young talent and veterans from the field of dance are recognised for their achievements. In an exclusive conversation with The Indian Express.com, Hema Malini talks about dance, Dharmendra and Bollywood.

Ques:How did dance happen in your life?

Hema Malini: Dance happened because of my mother Jaya Chakravarthy. She had decided that I would be a dancer even before I was born. There was no sonography and stuff in those days. Still she knew she would give birth to a girl and she had decided that the girl would be named Hema Malini and she would become a dancer. That is the vision she had. So once I was born, right from a very young age she put me into dance and instilled the interest in me. She then started accepting shows left, right and center. I was in Delhi then and as a small girl I started performing. That is how I got interested.

Ques:Were you ever nervous in your early days while performing on stage?

Hema Malini: I used to be totally nervous and used to make so many mistakes. After every mistake, I would look at my mother who would shout at me. She was strict but she trained me well in dance and taught me how to be smart enough to correct a mistake on stage when it happens.

Ques:What new will we get to see in ‘Jaya Smriti’ this time?

Hema Malini: It’s a new set of artistes who will be performing. Young girls who will be performing classical dance whether it is Bharat Natyam, Odissi, Kuchipudi or Kathak. It will only be classical dance.

Ques: Don’t you think there are less takers for classical dance today?

Hema Malini: Yes. Today there are only 1/4th who are interested in pursuing classical dance forms. The rest are into Bollywood. The ratio is not even. It is very difficult to sustain the interest in classical dance. That is why it is necessary to preserve these classical dance forms which are ours. I am doing my bit and there are other artists like me too who are inviting youngsters to perform.

Ques: Will you get into teaching dance as well?

Hema Malini: I am not a good teacher as I tend to be very strict. At my academy, I have hired a group of expert teachers and everybody will be taught exactly what I want. I also plan to get teachers from south.

Ques: We don’t see you much in Bollywood these days. Why?

Hema Malini: I have done my bit in Bollywood. I will do films only if a good role like Baghban comes my way. There is nothing wrong in doing one good film. I am also blessed in the sense that I can act when I want, dance, spend time with the people of my constituency and also with my family. What else can I ask for.

Ques: Do you like being called a dream girl?

Hema Malini: Why should I not like it? I was introduced as a Dream Girl. So, I will always remain one. I am okay with that.

Ques: Hema-Dharmendra has been the most evergreen pairing both and on and off screen. What’s the magic behind it?

Hema Malini: (Smiles) We came together, acted together, delivered hits and are together. It is all destiny and nothing is planned.

Ques: Dharmendra never won many awards for his performances. Do you think industry was biased towards him when it came to awards?

Hema Malini: Yes, he was not given awards. But public loves him and that is his biggest award. Even if you see me, I never received many awards except for a couple. Today they make a category to give an award. So you have something like a heroine in a negative role and many such awards. This is done so that people come in large numbers to attend the function. Had that been the case during my time, I would have got innumerable awards. For a movie like Lal Patthar, I didn’t get any award because it was a negative role.

Ques:How is your relationship with Rekha today?

Hema Malini: We are very friendly. It’s a different kind of a friendship between us. Not that everyday she comes and sees me. Once in a while we talk and she is always there for me. She is a very sweet girl.

Ques: Will we ever get to see both of you together in a film again?

Hema Malini: We did Sadiyaan together. Ab film karke kya karenge? We are over the age.

Birthday Special: All you need to know about Dharmendra and Hema Malini's eternal love story

Birthday Special: All you need to know about Dharmendra and Hema Malini

The story of Bollywood legends Dharmendra and Hema Malini is straight out of a Hindi film. The two bonded on the sets of 1970 film, Tum Haseen Main Jawan.

The He-Man of Bollywood was then married to Prakash Kaur - with whom he had two sons. However, he fell in love with Bollywood's dream girl.

Dharmendra and Hema Malini's wedding was picture perfect happy ending of every romantic Bollywood film. The two decided to convert to Islam as the Hindu religion does not permit two marriages and Dharmendra's first wife did not want a divorce.

Like most fathers, Hema Malini's dad was not too happy about his daughter getting married to a man with two children. This was one of the major reasons why the couple only tied the knot after Hema's father passed away.

The actress then said she found the actor to be strong and silent. In one of her interviews, she admitted to having fallen for Dharmendra after watching his "cute dance moves" in the song Main Jat Yamla Pagla Deewana.

The couple dated for over five years before getting married. 32 years later, they're still going strong. The duo have acted in 42 movies together and have never failed to impress the audiences with their evergreen chemistry

Hema Malini Gets Land Sanction to Build Classical Dance School

Actress Hema Malini’s 1996 dream of a 2,000 square meter plot in the suburbs to set up a classical dance school was realized Dec. 28 when state revenue minister Eknath Khadse handed over the sanction order to her.

The land had been first sanctioned to her by Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray, but the area was later declared part of the Coastal Regulation Zone and the actress had applied for another piece of land.

This failed to happen under successive chief ministers. At present, the BJP MP will have to continually fulfill certain preconditions to build and run the academy.

Land allotment to Hema Malini draws ire

Demands for housing for the homeless and slum-dwellers grow louder; government faulted for tardy approach.

Following the Maharashtra government’s recent decision to allot land in Andheri’s Ambivli area to actor Hema Malini’s dance academy, demands for land allotments to house the homeless and slum-dwellers are growing louder.

On Wednesday, the Youth for Unity and Voluntary Action sent a letter to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Maharashtra Revenue Minister Eknath Khadse and other officials asking the government to make land available for the rehabilitation of the homeless.

“In response to a petition by the Homeless Collective, the Mumbai Corporation and the State cited non-availability of land to rehabilitate the homeless. In this backdrop, on December 17, the BMC approved a proposal to build a cow shelter spread over one lakh square feet in the city. On Wednesday it was widely reported that Hema Malini was given land for her academy. We request the government to show the same drive in addressing the issue of the homeless,” the organisation’s letter to Mr. Fadnavis states. Mumbai needs 574 shelters and 57,000 still sleep on the city’s pavements, they said.

‘Reserved for institute’

Defending the State government’s decision, Mumbai suburban Collector Shekhar Channe said the 2000 square metre land in Ambivli allotted to the BJP MP was reserved for her institute after a change in the development plan. “The land was reserved for the institute. It was earlier RG (recreation ground), but in the Development Plan the plot was specifically reserved for the institute,” Mr. Channe told The Hindu. The authorities pointed out that the move was not out of turn as Section 37 of the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act made provisions for “minor modification” to the plan.

The Natyavihar Kala Kendra Charity Trust run by Ms. Hema Malini was granted the plot 19 years after she first applied for it. However, Opposition parties reacted to the government’s move citing the tardy approach to offering land for housing slum dwellers and mill workers.

Ms. Hema Malini said the hue and cry over the allotment was misplaced and baseless. “This place is not for slum-dwellers. It is meant for education and cultural activity. I will be maintaining a public garden and only a small portion of the plot will be used for the dance academy. I deserve to have this land. It is going to be a unique and beautiful cultural centre and Mumbai is happy about it. If you leave the land, it will be encroached upon,” she told The Hindu.

RTI activist Anil Galgali pointed out that the government ought to have issued a public notice ahead of the land allotment.

“The government should have announced the move through advertisements. Successive governments have been giving away land parcels to big personalities like filmmaker Subhash Ghai for his film school and former Union Minister Rajeev Shukla, which was later taken away.”

FLASHBACK! 'Bajirao Mastani' poster featuring Rajesh Khanna and Hema Malini

Sanjay Leela Bhansali's dream film 'Bajirao Mastani' not only jingled money at the box office but also made a special place in every movie-goer's heart.

Be it Ranveer Singh's heroic 'Bajirao' act, Deepika aka 'Mastani's never-ending love or 'Kashibai' Priyanka Chopra's sacrifice, each character was talked about for several days.

In the past too several film-makers had attempted to make this heart-breaking love story but things never materialized them. One of them was the Manmohan Desai, the man behind several hit films like 'Amar Akbar Anthony' and 'Coolie'! He wanted to make this magnum opus with superstar Rajesh Khanna and the 'Dream Girl' Hema Malini.

We recently came across the film's poster on the social media. Sadly the film never took off due to some unknown reasons-

Guess Ranveer and Deepika were destined to play these star-crossed lovers!
