Since my Indian movie experience startyed wirth Beti Beta in the early 60s, I've been hard-pressed to rank the movies.

I would have to say that for all-around entertainment Sholay has to rank up there. For court-room drama Waqt is one. Neel Kamal deserves some mention. For life's dramas for their periods, I have to go with Khabie Khabie, Abhimaan and Silsila. Life in a Metro would take its place one day.

What about the secret agent era Farz or the supernatural piece Woh Kaun Thi?

The mention of Ek duje ke liye jolted my memory of Kamal Hassan and some wonderful acting at that time.

For a movie with outstanding music, I have to go with Dosti, while my all-time favorite song is Sohani Raat from Dulari.

Answering the top 5 movie question is quite an exercise. I'm glad it was brought up. Buit what I'd like to see discussed is the Bollywood Dr. Zhivago or Godfather or Ghandi. Recent adaptations of western classics - Omkara and Saawaria - were not bad.

have seen Dr. Zhivago...there was a movie that was made depicting Gandhi's life '9 hours to Rama', 'Mahan' exemplified Godfather...but we a getting ahead on some movies...have to wait for asj decades posts & picks.....

"9 hours to Rama" - now that's a movie that rings a bell. I will have to get my hands on it.

As we're on the topic of "best 5", we should have a ranking for best natural dancer. For contemporary actors I can think of Hritick Roshan as the best male dancer and the two girls, Aishwaria Bachan and Mdhuri Dixit as being the best female ones.

Plot Summary
Major commercial hit recounting a love triangle in a feudal household between the handsome new postman Ashok (Kumar), Bela (Nargis),the old postman's vivacious daughter and Usha (Sultana), the haughty daughter of the zamindar. Ashok teaches Usha music until Bela warns her to keep away from her man. Usha withdraws and promises to marry a man of her father's choice. One of the most formally elaborate romance dramas of the 50s ...( show more ) Hindi films. Babul's tragic end forms part of the unusual plot departure of the heroine and who,indeed, remains out of sympathy with the audience for the better part of the film.

When it turns out that both women have been betrayed by the hero and by their fathers, the film shifts into a completely subjective style,locating the man and two women in three distinct spaces, even separated in one shot by a gigantic wal. In the end, Usha's wedding procession escalates into a whole sequence of tragedies. Bela, in a deranged fit,falls from a tree and is fatally injured, though she insists that Ashok marry her, which he does,minutes before she dies. her death is shown by a medieval horseman descending from the skies to receive her,as the smoke from her cremation merges with the clock.

AWARA 1951

THE PLOT:

A judge (Prithviraj Kapoor)'s wife (Leela Chitnis) is kidnapped and on being rescued is found to be pregnant. The husband turns her out accusing her of infidelity. Their son Raju (Raj Kapoor) born in the slums ends up a criminal and faces a murder charge. Rita (Nargis) Raju's lover and a lawyer herself (the Judge's ward) defends him and examines the judge in the witness box. She holds the judge and society responsible for depriving and dehumanizing Raju. The judge owns up to Raju being his son.

THE FILM:

With Awaara, Raj Kapoor created the tramp, the rootless vagabond living on his wits, inspired obviously by Chaplin. The tramp was an allegory for the innocent state of mind of the post Independent Indian. In post-partition India when the entire socio-political system was under stress and thousands of migrants poured into the cities, identification with Raj Kapoor's rootless Raju was plausible and easy. Although with Awaara, Raj Kapoor's social concerns become more pronounced, more than its social probe Awaara is an astonishing even ingenious mixture of melodrama, romance and crime.

Further, Raj Kapoor's musical sense and feel for rhythm and his personal involvement in music sittings have ensured the highest quality of music in his films and Awaara is no exception. The songs of Awaara ( Awaara Hoon, Ghar Aaya Mera Pardesi, Ab Raat Guzarnewaali Hai, Ek Bewafaa se Pyaar Kiya, Hum Tumse Mohabbat Karke Sanam and Dum Bhar Jo Udhar Moon Phere among others) are some of the most popular songs of Indian Cinema. Special mention must be made of the picturisation of Ek Do Teen a sleazy dance on the streets with renowned dancer Cuckoo. As she dances men letch and paw at her and Raj Kapoor actually drowns out the song and brings in their garrulous laughter over the soundtrack, a device that works remarkably well.
