JAGJIT SINGH: RENDERS GHALIB:

During his lifetime the Mughals were eclipsed and displaced by the British and finally deposed following the defeat of the Indian rebellion of 1857, events that he wrote of. Most notably, he wrote several ghazals during his life, which have since been interpreted and sung in many different ways by different people. Ghalib, the last great poet of the Mughal Era, is considered to be one of the most popular and influential poets of the Urdu language. Today Ghalib remains popular not only in India and Pakistan but also amongst diaspora communities around the world.

JAGJIT SINGH: RENDERS GHALIB:

At the age of thirteen, Ghalib married Umrao Begum, daughter of Nawab Ilahi Bakhsh (brother of the Nawab of Ferozepur Jhirka). He soon moved to Delhi, along with his younger brother, Mirza Yousuf Khan, who had developed schizophrenia at a young age and later died in Delhi during the chaos of 1857.

In accordance with upper class Muslim tradition, he had an arranged marriage at the age of 13, but none of his seven children survived beyond infancy. After his marriage he settled in Delhi. In one of his letters he describes his marriage as the second imprisonment after the initial confinement that was life itself. The idea that life is one continuous painful struggle which can end only when life itself ends, is a recurring theme in his poetry. One of his couplets puts it in a nutshell:

I understand that you are not indifferent to my feelings of love
Khaak ho jaayenge ham tumako Khabar hone tak
But I will turn into ashes (die) by the time you get a wind of my feelings

Aah ko chaahiye ik umr asar hone tak
It will take a lifetime for my sadness to have an effect on you

(Gamehastii kaa 'Asad' kis se ho juz marg ilaaj)2
Asad, the sorrows of my life, can be cured by none other than death
Shamm'a har rang men jalatii hai sahar hone tak
After all the candles burns under all circumstances till the dawn

shikan-e-zulf-e-ambari kyon hai
Why is this scented coiled curl created?(Hair?)
nigah-e-chashm-e-surma sa kya hai
What is the meaning of the glance of the eyes lined with kohl?

sabza-o-gul kahan se aye hain
Where from have this beautiful flora and greenery originated?
abr kya chiz hai hawa kya hai
What is this cloud and the wind?

Haan, bhala kar, tera bhala hoga
Yes, do good, and good will come to you
Aur darvesh ki sada kya hai
What but this does the mendicant say?

Maine mana ke kuch nahin "Ghalib"
I admit that it is nothing, "Ghalib"
Muft haath aaye to bura kya hai
What is bad if it comes to hand gratis?

Mirza Ghalib, in his ghazal "Dil e nadaan" has spoken of love, justice, human values, mysticism etc., each in a different couplet. Couplets in a  ghazal  are like gems of a beautiful necklace the luster of which is timeless.

His original Takhallus (pen-name) was Asad, drawn from his given name, Asadullah Khan. At some point early in his poetic career he also decided to adopt the pen-name of Ghalib (meaning all conquering, superior, most excellent). At some places, in his poetry, Ghalib has also used the pen name of Asad Ullah Khan
