Please be specific . . .

According to the police, setting the bridge on fire, setting a gasoline truck on fire, setting the GRA offices on fire, threatening people, etc.  Just going on the police report.

I supported the police action to be just until an inquiry can find it to be unjust. The police must have been in a dangerous position to take precautionary measures that MAY have contributed to four regrettable deaths. It's good to look at every situation with logic rather than hate. It will make us better and serving citizens of the homeland.

The idea now is to change the narrative, focus on the people who died, forget their misguided aims and forget the mayhem and violence which provoked an "over-reaction" from the security forces.

I hope the Govt get to the bottom and get compensation for the families of the victims.

I condemn the violence, but await an official inquiry.  Is that fair?

Dude, not in any western democratic nation in the past decade has a government taken to shooting protesters with real bullets. The PPP has tried that route twice in the past 10 months. That alone should tell you they are an anomaly in the civilized world.

What logic do you speak of and where should one seek solace in the wanton shooting of protestors? Better does not com from this contempt for a citizens right to protest. Get the damn water cannon they so much claim is an their supreme anti riot tool if the want to clear the bridge. this nonsense about using live ammunition cannot but foster anger and resentment. Better will come when the PPP show a little more respect and stop acting on basis of its conditioned reflexive ignorance of democratic creed.

The focus should be on those who died, their families and those who unjustly instigated and incited them into violence which led to the unfortunate situation.

Sir, quit being an ass and refrain from cliched meaningless banal phrases. The salons of Paris seeded the modern world. From the Pen of men like Voltaire and Montesquieu the revolutions creating the modern democratic state were seeded. Quit being silly.

As noted, women men and children on a bridge do not constitute an army of insurgents about to topple the government. The police were heavy handed and reckless. In its aftermath, the PPP has been callous, unrepentant, disrespectful and intransigent.

after perusing what the police had to say below, please direct me to the [your] police report [not the one currently being prepared in Freedom House] that indicates all the phantom property damage and arson that occurred prior to the police firing their shotguns into the crowd.

Take your time . . . but not too much time

The Police version of events according to KN 7/19/12

The Police version of the events was that at about 10:40h, approximately 450 persons marched from the Wismar Community Centre Ground, and on reaching the Wismar/Mackenzie bridge they remained there, “blocking the bridge and preventing motor vehicles from crossing.” Subsequently, the Police said, persons among the protestors which had grown to about 1,000 in number erected tents on the bridge and also placed derelict vehicles and logs across the bridge at several points.

The protestors remained on the bridge and refused to move despite efforts by the police under the Divisional Commander, the Police stated.

According to a statement, about 18:00 hrs, the Officer-in-Charge of the police riot unit which had arrived on the scene warned the protestors to remove as they were blocking the bridge and in breach of the law. They however continued to remain on the bridge while chanting that they will not remove and that they are not paying any increase in electricity tariff.

“The police again told the protestors that they were breaking the laws and that they should remove from the bridge, but they again refused and began hurling bottles, bricks and other missiles at the ranks of the police riot unit. At this stage the Officer-in-Charge of the unit again told them that they were unlawful and read the warning proclamation to them,” the Police stated.
They said the protestors continued hurling missiles at the police and began advancing towards the ranks and tear smoke grenades were used by the police in a further effort to remove the protestors.

Some of the protestors dispersed but a large number of persons still remained on the bridge and began setting fires on the bridge while continuing to chant and throw missiles towards the police, the statement added.

The Police said they discharged shotgun cartridges in the direction of the crowd resulting in a few persons being injured.

As at 22:30, the Police said they were unable to acquire sufficient information from the Mackenzie Hospital staff in order to verify the persons injured and the extent of their injuries as a hostile crowd gathered outside of the Hospital.

I am most certain you saw the same played out in many locations across the US but no one was shot. I personally went to he occupy wall street encampment at federal plaza in DC and it was a mass of makeshift structures by disgruntled people. The police waited months to tire them out and finally cleared the place.

You should have highlighted where the protestors threw bottle and bricks at the ranks and refuse police warning after many such warnings. Throwing bottles and bricks at the ranks is enough to take appropriate action against the crowd. What are you trying to prove? The people you're protecting were coerced to act illegally that led to four deaths. Why do you sound like Caribj aka Caribny... that is bent on racial behavior and PNC ignorance?

The situation becomes a domino effect starting from what led the police to use force. The fire started after, and the protestors are still responsible for destroying government property and refuse to surrender police orders. There is no place for thugs in Guyana. This will never be a repeat of the PNC days. Anymore riots of this extent should be dealt with more severe if the rioters "cannot" heed to police warning. The rioters broke the law! The rioters had the opposition backings. The rioters act stupidly and illegally and the opposition looks stupid.

That is a new level of inanity. Granted you are not the originator of that hypothesis because I read it earlier from Uber Uncle Tomite Sam Hinds.

I would suggest Thomas Payne's "Common sense" as light reading for the evening because these are indeed "the times that try men's souls"

Instead I would reflect on another tome by said gentleman that speaks to "the natural and imprescriptible rights of man ....liberty, property, security and resistance to oppression".

The PPP does not get to decide on these salient issues. If it feels it does and that it must enforce them as it did last night then one must reflect on the statement the right to resist oppression!

No no no, and I agree, agree, agree, they have every right to protest.  But I just want to know what you think of the root cause issue.  Do you think it was unjust for the Govt to require Lindeners pay an equitable rate?

I'm in total agreement with you, that's why I call for a full and independent investigation and all who are responsible, bar none, must be brought to account for their actions.  It is shameful and disgraceful.

Sorry dont live in Linden so will not opine.  Electricity might be cheaper but what is the overall cost of living in Linden?  What % of the population in Linden are employed?  What economic opportunities exist, or might potentially exist in Linden aside from bauxite which now employs few.

In order for me to opine I will need to know more.  I do know that in other countries special incentives exist tailored for regions where there are structural problems.  Are there any for Linden?  Cheap electricity has been used as an incentive in some places to attract economic activity.

Any way it is now clear that the PPP is no different from Forbes Burnham in how it treats those who dissent so I no longer expect to hear any wailing about how the PPP brought freedom to Guyana.  People were on abridge protesting dont need to be shot down in cold blood, regardless as to whether folks agree with them or not.

The PNC days are being repeated.  I recall when the PPP staged protests, which Burnham called illegal because he refused them permission to march, the police attacked, using the same excuses.  Guysuco property was also destroyed.  Please refer to the sugar strike of the late 70s and the Corenntyne Highway fiasco when toll booths and other property were destroyed.

Donald Ramotar=Forbes Burnham.

The problem is that Guyanese have never known freedom.  Not under the PNC, nor under the PPP.

If people had a right to protest in 1973, regardless as to whether permission was given or not, then they have a right to do the same in 2012.

So put away your racist mantra just because it is black people involved now and it was Indians in 1973.
