Merle Haggard was my introduction to country music when I first arrived in Canada, so many decades ago.  Johnny Cash was the other.

Both men sang from personal hardship and experiences. One of his first song I heard in the late 1960s  was ' Sing me back Home'  and 'Legend of Bonnie and Clyde'. I believe 'Sing me back Home'  was a prison  experience of a man walking past his cell to death row.

I heard it on an old 1940 AM  tube radio, with a wooden cabinet about four feet high, that I still have, but no more AM stations where I live.

RIP Merle, your songs make lot of people think about their life. My regards to Johnny Cash when you see him.
