Omega-3 Oils Slash Prostate Cancer Risk
The omega-3 fatty acids found in oily fish could slash the risk of developing prostate cancer almost in half. The fish oil also reversed the deadly effect of a gene known to increase the risk of developing an aggressive inherited form of prostate cancer.
Researchers at the University of California in San Francisco compared the diets of 466 men diagnosed with prostate cancer and 478 healthy men. Those who ate βdarkβ oily fish such as salmon, herring and mackerel, one to three times a month had a 36 percent reduced risk of developing prostate cancer. Those who ate the fish more than once a week slashed their risk by 57 percent. Scientists found similar results for eating shellfish, which also contains omega-3 oils.
The omega-3 oils also influenced a variant of the COX-2 gene, an inherited gene that encourages inflammation and is linked to a 500 percent increased risk for an aggressive form of prostate cancer. Eating a diet rich in oily fish wiped out the negative effects of the gene and eliminated the increased risk.
βThe COX-2 increased risk of disease was essentially reversed by increasing omega-3 fatty acid intake by half a gram per day,β said study leader John Witte, Ph.D. professor of epidemiology and biostatistics at the University of California at San Francisco. βIf you want to think of the overall inverse association in terms of fish, where omega-3 fatty acids are commonly derived, the strongest effect was seen from eating dark fish such as salmon one or more times per week.β
Scientists believe that omega-3 oils reduce the risk of prostate cancer by combating inflammation, which influences cancer risk.

Masturbation increases prostate cancer risk
Masturbation increases prostate cancer risk in their 20s and reduces cancer risk in their 50s.
Researchers asked these men about their sexual habits and the number of sexual partners. 40% of prostate cancer patients have 5-6 female sexual partners. 59% of men said that they had engaged in sexual activity 12 times a month or more in their 20s.
Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers in men especially in old age. Those who have higher sex hormone levels (testosterone) will have high sex drive and have higher chances of developing prostate cancer. There are enough evidences on the role of hormones in causing prostate cancer and physicians treat these patients in order to reduce those hormone levels.
Prostate cancer risk increases with increase in number of sexual partners along with increase in diagnosis of sexual infections.

Yoga and Cancer - Julie Friedeberger
I would like to tell you about how yoga can help people with cancer and about the weekly yoga class for people with cancer which I teach at the Yoga Therapy Centre in Central London.
Yoga is a holistic healing system for creating harmony and balance on all levels: body, mind, emotions and spirit. When this balance has been disturbed by serious illness, practising yoga can help in a number of ways to restore it.
Yoga encourages the development of the inner resources that help in dealing with a life-changing illness, the unfolding of the qualities of self-awareness, resilience, stability, faith and trust that enable us to meet all of life's challenges and to use them as opportunities for growth and change.
Yoga has been an unfailing source of sustenance and spiritual nourishment in the 33 years I have practised and taught it. When I had breast cancer in 1993, yoga helped me through the stressful period of diagnosis and mastectomy surgery; and in the longer term it has played the key role in my healing My experience has shown me that yoga has a great deal to offer people with cancer..

How can yoga help people with cancer?
Cancer is a broad complex of illnesses in which a weakened immune system cannot cope with the proliferation of damaged cells. Of course yoga is not a "cure" for cancer but it can help to strengthen the immune system and encourage our inner healing forces.
It works in various ways:
relaxation - calms the nervous system and alleviates the stress and anxiety which lower immune functioning and hinder healing
breathing exercises - improves respiration, releases tension and restores balance and calm
meditation - develops the detachment and clarity that enables us to acknowledge and accept the realities of our situation and to cope with our fears
physical posture - clears toxins, increases energy levels and enhances the functioning of our internal organs and systems
The simplest of yoga breathing, relaxation and meditation techniques can also help us to deal with the overwhelming emotions that come with the diagnosis of a life-changing illness: shock, anger, fear, guilt to name the most obvious ones. And they can be of help in managing the stress, anxiety and pain of cancer surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
Yoga offers practical tools with which you can help yourself and mobilise your own inner resources. Yoga is empowering because you are doing something for yourself: no-one is doing it for you.

Yoga Techniques
1. Relaxation
Relaxation helps undo the stress that is so detrimental to the immune system. It is an especially vital element in healing. In relaxation, muscular and mental tension are released, breathing slows down, heart rate and blood pressure are lowered and anxiety diminishes. Body and mind "let go" and surrender themselves to inner stillness and peace. These are conditions conducive to the repair of cells, conditions in which healing can take place. In relaxation we actively co-operate with our immune system and encourage our inner healing forces to work for us.
2. Breathing Exercises
Breathing exercises release tension, replenish energy and calm the mind and the emotions. Our emotions affect our breathing: when we are anxious, angry or frightened, our breath responds to our emotional state and becomes shallow and erratic. The reverse is true too: the way that we breathe affects our emotional state. By becoming more aware of our breathing pattern and consciously, gradually changing it, we calm the sympathetic nervous system so that anxiety recedes and calm and balance are restored.
Shallow, restricted breathing contributes to tiredness, depression and physical illness. Relaxed, rhythmic breathing which fully utilises the lungs can help us to avoid and overcome illness. The simple breathing and stretching exercises of yoga are calming, uplifting and energising. They improve the elasticity and efficiency of the breathing muscles (the diaphragm and intercostal muscles) and replace poor breathing habits with more healthy, life enhancing ones.
3. Meditation
Meditation gives us the opportunity to allow our thoughts and emotions to surface so that we can look at them instead of burying them. The simple meditation practice of breath awareness develops the mental focus, detachment and clarity which enables us to look steadily at the realities of our situation. Once we've looked at them, we can acknowledge and accept them, work with them and move on. Repressing emotions traps energy and increases stress; acknowledging and accepting them liberates energy and reduces stress. Meditation is a therapeutic process that allows the contents of our personality to surface and become integrated into consciousness. It is healing in the fullest sense of the word.
4. Yoga postures
Yoga postures work on our internal organs and systems, including the nervous system, as well as on our joints, muscles and ligaments. They influence our breathing, circulation, digestion and elimination, our mental and emotional balance and our energy levels; as well as our physical posture, strength, stamina and flexibility.
A lifetime of yoga has taught me to regard life's big challenges as opportunities for growth and change. My experience of cancer left me with a deeper trust in the power of yoga to help us face our challenges and heal ourselves and a stronger commitment to teaching it.

The Holistic Approach to Cancer - A Guide for Health Professionals
New Approaches to Cancer promotes the idea that the best possibility for cancer patients to produce remission is through holistic medicine and self-help. Both of these probably need some definition as there is much misunderstanding, both amongst professionals and the public, of their true meaning.
Holistic medicine is the treatment of a person at all levels of their being, physical, mental, emotional and spiritual, through whatever methods are deemed best by the patient and their physician through informed consent. It does not mean that only "alternative" approaches should be used, but emphasis is on treatment of the whole person.
Self-help has also become synonymous with Mutual Support and needs to be looked at very differently. The former means very active work by the patient to change those aspects of their life that are unhelpful to their well-being, which may involve diet, psychotherapy and changes in work or relationships, whereas the latter only involved attendance at group meetings with fellow sufferers.
This is not meant to imply that the mutual support is unimportant, merely that self-help entails much more, and that patients who want to follow this route should be made aware of the full possibilities. This approach is seen as threatening by some members of the medical profession as it, of necessity, involves choices outside of the medical model. Fortunately, this fear is changing, as scientific evidence increasingly demonstrates the value of the mind and diet on health and treatments such as acupuncture and homeopathy are shown to be effective in controlled trials.
So what do we mean when we talk of treating the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual aspects of a person? Let us look at each one of these separately, although it must be emphasised that they cannot be separated and each has an effect on the other.

Physical
This includes treatment by surgery, radiation and chemotherapy, but with informed consent and in conjunction with other treatments.
In addition, it would include dietary modification, where possible without causing stress, nutritional supplementation or mega-vitamin therapy. It is well established that vegetarians are less cancer prone and recent research at Harvard has shown that protease inhibitors, found in some vegetables, actively regress human tumours in human cultures.
Treatment with complementary medicine such as acupuncture, homeopathy, herbalism or any other that the patient wishes to try, or believes in, should also be considered.

Acupuncture
The Chinese have been successfully treating cancer with acupuncture for thousands of years. Their experience is that cancer patients generally respond very well to traditional acupuncture alone, although it is in practice usually combined with dietary advice, herbal remedies and breathing/visualisation exercises.
Cancer is seen as a stagnation of meridian energy which has perhaps been building up for many years and which may derive originally from blockages on physical, nutritional, emotional and/or psycho-spiritual levels. The insertion of needles into carefully chosen points catalyses the release of their stagnant energy. Thus the patient's own self-healing powers are enabled to reduce, eliminate and heal the site of the cancer.
If the cancer has reached a more advanced stage, there is still the potential for much inner healing and personal re-integration to occur along with a significant or total reduction in any associated pain.
Iscador
Iscador is a preparation made from mistletoe which is helpful to cancer patients during the post operative period to prevent recurrences, and in the treatment of inoperable cases.
It has been researched for nearly fifty years and is safe in use and improves the patient's general well-being. It is preferably given by injection and treatment must be prescribed and supervised by a doctor.

Herbal Medicine
The herbal approach is aimed at stimulating the immune system with herbs which work on the lymphatic system. Also other herbs which stimulate the circulation and aid this action by raising the temperature of the body. It is important to remove any focus of infection which will tax the immune system further - this is where anti-infective remedies play their part.
Herbal medicine is less concerned with targeting the tumour than helping the body's own defences. However, there are traditional anti-neoplastic herbs that are employed specifically to inhibit the development of tumours. Remedies might include herbs of benefit to the organ involved.
Bitter herbs are important to promote digestive function and support the liver in a detoxifying regime. While herbal diuretics help the eliminative function of the kidneys, other herbs may be used to provide a purgative action to the digestive system.

Nervous restoratives have their role in supporting the patient at a psychological level.
The Gerson Diet
The Gerson diet is a regime of strict dietary restriction (vegan to begin with) along with freshly prepared juices and coffee enemas to detoxify the liver.
It is more successful in treating some forms of cancer than others and has good results in some forms of cancer that have previously been difficult to treat, such as malignant melanoma. It is not suitable if you have had previous chemotherapy. A warning has recently been issued that you should not use alfalfa and leguminous sprouts, because of the danger of reactivating systematic lupus erythematosis and therefore potentially other auto-immune diseases.
B17 or Laetrile (obtained from apricot kernals)
The theory of action of vitamin B17 is very sophisticated, involving delivery of cyanide only to the cancer cells, while normal cells are immune. It can either be given by injection or by tablet form, though the injections are almost impossible in the UK at the present time. This treatment has been denounced as worthless by trials in America but some people have pointed out that the trials were biased. There is some doubt as to whether true Laetrile has ever been produced. You should not take more than 1gm a day for adults by mouth because of the risk of cyanide poisoning and it is better to take it in divided doses.
It needs to be used in conjunction with other methods for full benefit.
Exercise
Exercise is also very important to aid blood circulation. Obviously it must be tailored to suit the individual, but swimming, cycling and walking are excellent if you have the energy.
Otherwise, systems such as Tai-Chi and yoga are very beneficial, the latter having shown benefits for cancer patients in a medical study done in the UK. Both of these systems also have mental benefits.

Yoga for Cancer
Yoga can be a powerful tool for healing; particularly since it can help reinforce the immune system. For people suffering from cancer, Yoga can be a real source of empowerment β since one can practise oneself.
In yoga, we deal with the body is through the practice of physical postures (called asanas). These invigorate and balance all the systems within the body β circulatory system, respiratory, digestive, nervous system, musculoskeletal, endocrine, reproductive and urogenital system. When something goes out of balance, the whole body gets affected. As a result a number of asanas are practiced in sequence to deal with the whole body.
Yoga practice is always patient specific, depending upon which parts are affected, the type of cancer one is suffering from (or had), and the patient's physical abilities. The physical exercises and asanas in Yoga work in a number of ways on the internal organs and the systems of the body, especially the nervous system. This also includes the joints, muscles and ligaments. Yoga affects ones breathing, posture, circulation, digestion, elimination, plus physical strength, stamina and flexibility.
When practicing a particular asana, the patient must do what he / she can without generating more pain. There may be some discomfort, but going to the point of sharp pain will not in any way benefit the practitioner. Oftentimes the asanas seem easier if the patient actually practises less.
These Yoga sessions also help the cancer patient cope with the traumas that accompany a diagnosis that, as anyone afflicted by cancer knows, carries with it emotions which can be rather devastating at times β shock, fear, anger, guilt, anxiety and grief to name a few. According to Yoga, the most effortless breathing, relaxation and meditation techniques can go a long way in helping the patient deal with them. They can also be of significant help in dealing with the anxiety of surgery, chemotherapy and radiation.

AYURVEDA FOR CANCER CURE
Ayurveda sees cancer (Arbudha) as the result of impure blood and aggravated Doshas, the Vata, Pitta and Kapha Doshas. Ayurveda, a science of life, can be used as an alternative therapy for deadly cancer. Modern medicine, on the other hand, has less to offer to tackle it.
Ayurvedic Approach to Cancer
The ancient Ayurvedic classics like Charaka Samhita and Shushruta Samhitha discuss cancer as Arbudha (major neoplasm) or Granthi (minor neoplasm), and Tridosaja and Sannipataja as the malignant stage of neoplasm or abnormal growth.
In Ayurveda, each individual is said to have a Prakriti (unique nature). As a system of medicine which treats the root cause of the disease, Ayurveda tries to find the actual cause of the disease, cancer. There are many reasons for the aggravation of Doshas and impurity of the blood.
Ayurveda and Growth of Cancer
Ayurveda describes the development of cancer in the human body as a result of the circulation of aggravated Doshas and impure blood. This impure blood and aggravated Doshas locate in certain parts of the body which is weaker in terms of immunity. This results in the abnormal functioning of the blood, in that part of the body. Moreover, it also disrupts the ability of the blood to carry Prana (life air) to the cells.
The Prana (life air), along with oxygen contains a form of energy, which helps the cells in their normal functions. The localisation of impure blood the Prana reaching the other parts of the body also turns impure. This results in the abnormal or uncontrolled cell division called cancer or Arbudha.
Causes of Cancer
Few reasons aggravating the Doshasβthe root cause of cancer:
Improper life style and food
Smoking and chewing tobacco
Breathing of polluted air or chemicals
Consumption of vegetables and fruits containing pesticides
Treatment of Cancer in Ayurveda
Ayurveda offers support and comfort for the cancer patients. Ayurveda offers prophylactic, palliative, supportive and curative solutions for the cancer. Ayurveda can support the patient in many ways,
It can be used as a co-therapy with the chemotherapy
It can used along with the radio therapy
It can be used for post surgery support
To prevent cancer cellβs proliferation
To cure the tumours
It can be used as a therapy to improve the quality of life of the patient
Ayurveda preaches harmony with nature to battle cancer. Balance between the three Doshas should be maintained to prevent cancer.

JOHN HOPKINS IS FINALLY STARTING TO TELL YOU THERE IS
AN ALTERNATIVE WAY TO ELIMINATE CANCER.
1. Every person has cancer cells in the body. These cancer cells do not
show up in the standard tests until they have multiplied to a few
billion. When doctors tell cancer patients that there are no more cancer
cells in their bodies after treatment, it just means the tests are
unable to detect the cancer cells because they have not reached the
detectable size.
2. Cancer cells occur between 6 to more than 10 times in a person's
lifetime.
3. When the person's immune system is strong the cancer cells will be
destroyed and prevented from multiplying and forming tumors.
4. When a person has cancer it indicates the person has multiple
nutritional deficiencies. These could be due to genetic, environmental,
food and lifestyle factors.
5. To overcome the multiple nutritional deficiencies, changing diet and
including supplements will strengthen the immune system.
6. Chemotherapy involves poisoning the rapidly-growing cancer cells and
also destroys rapidly-growing healthy cells in the bone marrow,
gastrointestinal tract etc, and can cause organ damage, like liver,
kidneys, heart, lungs etc.
7. Radiation while destroying cancer cells also burns, scars and damages
healthy cells, tissues and organs.
8. Initial treatment with chemotherapy and radiation will often reduce
tumor size. However prolonged use of chemotherapy and radiation do not
result in more tumor destruction.
9. When the body has too much toxic burden from chemotherapy and
radiation the immune system is either compromised or destroyed, hence
the person can succumb to various kinds of infections and complications.
10. Chemotherapy and radiation can cause cancer cells to mutate and
become resistant and difficult to destroy. Surgery can also cause cancer
cells to spread to other sites.
11. An effective way to battle cancer is to starve the cancer cells by
not feeding it with the foods it needs to multiply.
CANCER CELLS FEED ON:
a. SUGAR is a cancer-feeder. By cutting off sugar it cuts off one
important food supply to the cancer cells. Sugar substitutes like
NutraSweet, Equal, Spoonful, etc are made with Aspartame and they are
harmful. A better natural substitute would be Manuka honey or molasses but
only in very small amounts. Table salt has a chemical added to make it
white in color. Better alternative to salt is Bragg's aminos or sea salt.
b. Milk causes the body to produce mucus, especially in the
gastrointestinal tract. Cancer feeds on mucus. By cutting off milk and
substituting with unsweetened soy milk cancer cells are being starved.
c. Cancer cells thrive in an acid environment. A meat-based diet is
acidic and it is best to eat fish, and a little chicken rather than beef
or pork. Meat also contains livestock antibiotics, growth hormones and
parasites, which are all harmful, especially to people with cancer.
d. A diet made of 80% fresh vegetables and juice, whole grains, seeds, nuts
and a little fruit help put the body into an alkaline environment. About
20% can be from cooked food including beans. Fresh vegetable juices provide
live enzymes that are easily absorbed and reach down to cellular levels
within 15 minutes to nourish and enhance growth of healthy cells. To obtain
live enzymes for building healthy cells try and drink fresh vegetable juice
(most vegetables including bean sprouts) and eat some raw vegetables 2 or 3
times a day. Enzymes are destroyed at temperatures of 104 degrees F (40
degrees
C).
e. Avoid coffee, tea, and chocolate, which have high caffeine. Green
tea is a better alternative and has cancer-fighting properties. Water- best
to drink purified water, or filtered, to avoid known toxins
and heavy metals in tap water. Distilled water is acidic, avoid it.
12. Meat protein is difficult to digest and requires a lot of digestive
enzymes. Undigested meat remaining in the intestines, become putrefied and
leads to more toxic buildup.
13. Cancer cell walls have a tough protein covering. By refraining from or
eating less meat it frees more enzymes to attack the protein walls of
cancer cells and allows the body's killer cells to destroy the cancer
cells.
14. Some supplements build up the immune system (IP6, Flor-ssence, Essiac,
anti-oxidants, vitamins, minerals, EFAs etc.) to enable the body's own
killer cells to destroy cancer cells. Other supplements like vitamin E are
known to cause apoptosis, or programmed cell death, the body's normal
method of disposing of damaged, unwanted, or unneeded cells.
15. Cancer is a disease of the mind, body, and spirit. A proactive and
positive spirit will help the cancer warrior be a survivor. Anger,
resentment, and bitterness put the body into a stressful and acidic
environment. Learn to have a loving and forgiving spirit. Learn to relax
and enjoy life.
16. Cancer cells cannot thrive in an oxygenated environment. Exercising
daily, and deep breathing help to get more oxygen down to the cellular
level. Oxygen therapy is another means employed to destroy cancer cells.
CANCER UPDATE FROM JOHN HOPKINS HOSPITAL
U S A
1. No plastic containers in micro.
2. No water bottles in freezer.
3. No plastic wrap in microwave.
Johns Hopkins has recently sent this out in its newsletters. This
information is being circulated at Walter Reed Army Medical Center as well.
Dioxin chemicals cause cancer, especially breast cancer.
Dioxins are highly poisonous to the cells of our bodies.
Don't freeze your plastic bottles with water in them as this releases
dioxins from the plastic.
Recently, Dr. Edward Fujimoto, Wellness Program Manager at Castle Hospital,
was on a TV program to explain this health hazard. He talked about dioxins
and how bad they are for us. He said that we should not be heating our food
in the microwave using plastic containers.
This especially applies to foods that contain fat. He said that the
combination of fat, high heat, and plastics releases dioxin into the food
and ultimately into the cells of the body. Instead, he recommends using
glass, such as Corning Ware, Pyrex or ceramic containers for heating food.
You get the same results, only without the dioxin. So such things as TV
dinners, instant ramen and soups, etc., should be removed from the
container and heated in something else.
Paper isn't bad but you don't know what is in the paper. It's just safer to
use tempered glass, Corning Ware, etc. He reminded us that a while ago some
of the fast food restaurants moved away from the foam containers to paper.
The dioxin problem is one of the reasons.
Also, he pointed out that plastic wrap, such as Saran, is just as
dangerous when placed over foods to be cooked in the microwave. As the food
is nuked, the high heat causes poisonous toxins to actually melt out of the
plastic wrap and drip into the food. Cover food with a paper towel instead.
