It's a practice more closely associated with third world countries, but in bleak times in a Chicago-area suburb, 30 people were buried in a mass grave on Wednesday.

The pauper's burial section at Homewood Memorial Gardens was established for those who could not afford to pay for a burial plot.

And it is a problem that's sweeping America as tough economic times have led to an increase in the number of indigent burials the morgue must perform.

I believe that is going on for years now at Hart Island Cemetery in the Bronx.

at least these poor people are in a box and not buried on top of each other.

There are many unclaimed bodies laying in morgues for years due to poverty or the deceased family member cannot afford to claim the dead. Mass grave burial may be the result.

Also Known as Potters field.
Its a piece of land where the dirt was used to make pots.
With the generous donation of 30 piece of silver from you know who,
Priest used the silver to buy the land,for the burial of the destitute.
New york in the 1960's when most of us from Guyana were Illegal,(yes Guys it was not always as good as you have it now)
there few Guyanese that rested at Hart Island,May GOD bless their soul.

Mr.TI pity the fool

My main concern and objection to this process is that they are not being buried 6 foot under. Once the wood of the coffins gets weaker the soil above it will collapse. This will expose the remains in due course.

On Hart Island, the top boxes are only about 36" from the surface.
Every year,about 100 bodies are exhumed when family are willing to to claim them.
Do keep in mine the Hart island is not accessible to the Public,and Trespassing is punishable by up to two years in prison.
A family member wanting to visit, is not impossible, but it is an arduous process.
