Members of the film fraternity including Mahesh Bhatt, Rishi Kapoor and Sona Mohapatra have strongly criticised the paint attack on former journalist Sudheendra Kulkarni for organising a former Pakistan minister's book launch in Mumbai.

Rishi Kapoor said that the act is "unpardonable" while Mr Bhatt noted that it not only brings shame on to the society, but also "debunks our claims to be a democracy". (Also Read: Rishi Kapoor on Meat Ban and 'Radhe Baby' in Long Expected Tweet)

The stir created after the cancellation of Pakistani ghazal maestro Ghulam Ali's concert is yet to die down when some suspected Shiv Sena workers attacked Mr Kulkarni, allegedly for organising an event to launch a book by former Pakistani foreign minister Khurshid Mahmud Kasuri.

The incident happened when Mr Kulkarni was leaving his home in south-central Mumbai on Monday morning. A group of around a dozen alleged Shiv Sena activists threw black paint on him.

"It's a familiar nightmare that keeps on recurring in this part of our country and one has seen irrespective of the government in the seat of power, the peace activists of the civil society aiming for keeping cultural ties intact with Pakistan have to face roadblocks like this," said Mr Bhatt

Filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt has criticized the cancellation of renowned Pakistani ghazal singer Ghulam Ali's concert in Mumbai after objections raised by the Shiv Sena, which co-governs Maharashtra with the BJP.

The 75-year old singer was scheduled to perform in Mumbai and Pune this week as a part of the fourth death anniversary tribute to late singer Jagjit Singh.

"It's a familiar nightmare that keeps on recurring in this part of our country and one has seen irrespective of the government in the seat of power, the peace activists of the civil society aiming for keeping cultural ties intact with Pakistan have to face roadblocks like this," Mr Bhatt told IANS in a telephonic interview.

"But even if level talks are not taking place, let the civil society be given rights to keep their cultural ties intact through the performing arts," he added.

Mr Bhatt has given a sample of his work to the neighbouring country with a play based on his 1989 film Daddy, which was staged in Pakistan earlier this year.

"During the Congress regime, we had to go through a similar scenario where Pakistani actors and performers were obstructed from performing. Then came this new government. In the beginning signals were given by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who sent an invitation to Nawaz Sharif, saying that they wish to bridge the distances that exist between the two countries and nothing much happened on that front," he added.(Also Read: 'Not Angry, Very Hurt' Says Pak Singer Ghulam Ali as Concert Cancelled After Sena Threat)

Shah Rukh honoured to be Dr Khan

Shah Rukh Khan at the degree ceremony in London, 10 July 2009
Maybe I can keep the robes... 'I've sweated in them'

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan can now call himself "doctor" after being honoured in the United Kingdom for his contribution to arts and culture.

Bedfordshire University conferred the doctorate upon him at a ceremony in London on Friday night.

Khan said he aimed to use the award to help educate underprivileged children.

The actor, who has starred in dozens of films, already has his own waxwork at Madame Tussaud's and has previously been honoured in France and Malaysia.

'Top' award

Khan was able to joke about becoming a doctor after frequent surgery in the past few years, most recently on his shoulder five months ago.

"Interestingly my kids don't understand this doctorate and believe I will be awarded a stethoscope," he joked at the degree ceremony.

The star was awarded the doctorate at a top London hotel instead of on university premises north of London because of the summer break.

The university received his nomination from Routes 2 Roots, an NGO that works towards people-to-people contact across the subcontinent, especially India and Pakistan.

Accepting the honour, Khan said he had received numerous awards as an actor but being given an honorary doctorate was the top achievement.

The actor left one of Delhi's top schools with the best student award - but never finished a masters degree.

So how did he feel about receiving the honour?

"I get the feeling that I should further the cause of those underprivileged children who don't get the opportunity to educate themselves,'' he said, quickly adding that he should perhaps begin with his own children who are "highly uneducated as of now".

The 43-year-old also added he was most scared of mathematics as a child, and intended to make sure his children were good at the subject.

Khan also joked that he might get to keep his university robes: "I have sweated in them - [they] can't be returned unless I dry clean them."

The ceremony was also attended by the famously barefoot Indian painter MF Hussain and British film maker Gurinder Chadha.

Other Indian stars to have been given honorary doctorates in the UK include Amitabh Bachchan, Shilpa Shetty, Akshay Kumar and AR Rahman.

'Shaandaar' U/A; Rom-Com Director: Vikas Bahl Cast: Shahid Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Pankaj Kapur, Sanah Kapur Rating:

What do you call a film that seems so dizzy-headed that it doesn't know where it is headed, or wait, perhaps so sure of itself that takes a strut towards that forbidden area of superiority complex? It takes two long hours (which feels longer) for one to gauge which category 'Shaandaar' falls into. But by the end of it, you stop caring.

'Shaandaar' Movie Review Shahid Kapoor and Alia Bhatt in 'Shaandaar'. Pic/Santa Banta

This film is supposedly a fairy tale with a quirky take. One would naturally expect dollops of delight, but ironically and disappointingly, Shaandaar chooses to kill us with clichÃĐs than charm us with its idiosyncrasies.

Alia (Alia Bhatt), is a nerdy, intelligent, chirpy young woman who has a yawningly predictable back story, narrated to us through Naseeruddin Shah's velvety voice. It is this voice that also informs us of some hotchpotch theory of Alia being an insomniac who hasn't slept for the last 25 years and that some day, some man will put her to sleep. She is crazy about her dad Bipin Arora (Pankaj Kapur) and sister (Sanah Kapur), but hates her mother (Nicki Aneja Walia) and conniving grandmother (Sushma Seth). You know it is a case of unimaginative casting when Seth is cast as a rich, wily woman with a pearl necklace around her neck. She must be sleepwalking through such roles by now.

Alia meets Jagjinder Joginder (Shahid Kapoor) just days before her sister's wedding in a dreamy castle. And guess what, the spirited and good hearted JJ is also an insomniac. While he constantly spars with Alia's protective father, he bonds with her over their lack of sleep and 'inability' to dream.

The fairytale setting, though seen often in rom-coms set in England, is perfect with the said castle, yards of greenery around it and platters and platters of colourful cupcakes and other such goodies making the rounds. However, what is sorely missing is the magic that generally comes along with such settings and a romantic story woven around it.

Shahid and Alia, being the talented actors that they are, make a lovely pair. In fact, one scene where they spend an evening together just goofing around is so lovely that it wistfully tells us about what this movie could have been, if the makers didn't have their head stuck in the clouds. Hope to see this pairing in a better setting. Pankaj Kapur, undeniably a brilliant actor, does his job pretty well. Sanah is confident and endearing.

The story lacks imagination, the screenplay is shoddy and the dialogues unfunny. Some humour goes unlaughed at and rest goes undigested. For instance, there's a scene where it is hinted that a respected business magazine takes money to put people on their covers, and another one when a young lad sets his grandma on fire.
