On the news tonight, the US is now admitting that the plane was conducting espionage in Iran, run by the CIA. This is reminiscent of the U-2 incident in 1960, where the US offered all sorts of bogus explanations before finally admitting what had happened.

WASHINGTON: Speculation on how Iran was able to capture the Pentagon's stealthy RQ-170 unmanned aircraft has consumed defense and intelligence insiders for weeks. But recent reports based on sources in Tehran claim the highly-classified drone was brought down by an Iranian cyberattack.

Iranian engineers were allegedly able to hack into the unmanned aircraft's control systems and trick the drone's guidance systems to think it was landing in U.S-held territory in Afghanistan. In fact, Iranian hackers guided the CIA-operated aerial drone to land in Iran, according to today's story in the Christian Science Monitor. The so-called 'Beast of Kandahar' was conducting intelligence operations over Iran at the time of its capture. Gaps in the plane's global positioning system allowed Iranian military officials to take control of the plane from its CIA handlers. Iranian intelligence learned about the GPS vulnerabilities by examining other American drones captured by Tehran, according to the story.

If such claims are true, a cyberattack would explain the remarkable condition the RQ-170 was in when Iranian military leaders put their trophy on display live on television. The lack of damage on the aircraft led many to believe the drone was a fake. Retired three-star general and former head of Air Force intelligence David Deptula wouldn't comment whether the RQ-170 was taken down by a cyber attack. (Deptula is a member of AOL Defense Board of Contributors) But this is not the first time America's fleet of unmanned aircraft have been exploited in the cyber realm.

In 2009, Taliban forces were able to hack into live video feeds coming from Air Force Predator drones by using commercially-produced hardware. Air Force officials at the time said those gaps did not extend into the aircraft's control systems. Further, service officials claimed the data encryption and security standards built into the U.S. aerial drone fleet couldn't be cracked by the Taliban or any other adversary.

'Intense mental pressure on US officials'

A senior Iranian military commander says US President Barack Obama's recent plea to Tehran to return the RQ-170 spy drone is a sign of extreme psychological pressure on American leaders.


“In his words, Obama showed to the entire world what kind of logic he uses to govern America,” Brigadier General Mehdi Mahdavinejad, commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps, said on Friday.

“Americans never imagined such security and intelligence scandal because they did not have a correct understanding of Iran's might in electronic [warfare],” Mehr News Agency quoted him as saying on Friday.

Mahdavinejad also stated that many senior US military officials believe that invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan by the US has been fruitless.

“Such measures prove the lack of wisdom and low intellect of America's leaders who after several years of presence in these countries [Iraq and Afghanistan], must now withdraw their forces from Iraq with humiliation and will certainly have to do the same in Afghanistan in future,” he said.

The IRGC commander added that US efforts to create crisis in other countries have backfired and the Occupy Wall Street movement is currently targeting America's capitalist system.

A US RQ-170 spy drone crossed Afghanistan's border with Iran on December 4, but was successfully brought down with minimal damage by the Iranian Army's electronic warfare unit. The aircraft was flying over the northeastern Iran city of Kashmar, some 225 kilometers (140 miles) away from the Afghan border.

Following days of silence on the capture and unveiling of spy drone by Iranian armed forces, US President Barack Obama claimed on December 12 that Washington has asked Tehran to return the US reconnaissance drone.

“We've asked for it back. We'll see how the Iranians respond,” he added in a news conference with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki in Washington.

High-ranking Iranian officials, including Defense Minister Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi have announced that the spy plane will remain in Iran's possession to undergo reverse engineering.

The RQ-170 is an unmanned stealth aircraft designed and developed by the Lockheed Martin Company.

The drone is one of America's most advanced surveillance aircraft. Its loss is considered a major embarrassment for Washington.

'Iran will hunt any intruding US drone'

A senior Iranian military official has lashed out at the United States over the recent US spy drone incident, stressing that Iran will hunt out any American recon aircraft that violates Iranian airspace.


If the US spy drones continue their acts of aggression against Iran, the Islamic Republic will not remain silent and will hunt their drones, said Rear Admiral Ali Shamkhani, a member of the Strategic Council for Iran's Foreign Relations in an IRNA report on Friday.

On December 4, the Iranian military's electronic warfare unit announced that Iran downed a US RQ-170 Sentinel stealth reconnaissance aircraft deep inside Iran with minimal damage.

The aircraft, designed and developed by the American company Lockheed Martin, had crossed into Iran's airspace over the border with neighboring Afghanistan.

Shamkhani lauded “the great capability” of Iran's Armed Forces to down the American spy craft and emphasized that the Iranian forces will give a firm response to any intrusion into the Islamic Republic's airspace.

The former defense minister reiterated that the Iranian nation would never retreat from defending the country's airspace.

The US should be held accountable for violating international law in case of continuation of their aggressive acts, said Rear Admiral Shamkhani.

On December 6, two US officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed to CNN that the drone was part of a CIA reconnaissance mission involving the US intelligence community stationed in Afghanistan.

Tehran has urged the United Nations to condemn such contravention and adopt necessary measures to end the “dangerous and illegal” acts.
