Hey guys, can anyone provide me with some information on orphanages in Guyana? Every year at Christmas, I give away toys to the Toys for Tots drive here in the US. This year, I'd like to devote my efforts to giving some of the kiddies of Guyana a Christmas they will remember. My friends and family are on board to help as well.

St. Ann's Orphanage (Thomas St) - girls orphanage run by the nuns.
Joshua House (East St. I think)
St. John's - boys orphanage Plaisance
Mahaica Children's Home
There's also the Children's Convalescent Home (close to Davis Memorial) - babies to 5/6 yr old - I think run by the Red Cross.
I'm sure that there are quite a few others. All reasonably well run and catering for a real need in our society.

There is also The Shaheed Orphanage in Kitty - 27 boys and 26 girls last time I counted.

Thank you for the information! I googled it, but wasn't able to find too much. I'd like to give to the center with the greatest need. Thanks again.
Keep in mind, orphanages closer to GT gets most of the assistance and there are ones with greater needs in the country areas.
Some are not known to be reliable and due to limited funds many dont have websites.
Some associated with churches seems to be more reliable, because they are accountable to the pastoral council.

Good point. It would be nice to find one in Berbice.

I encourage EVERYONE on this message board to contribute to charities in Guyana, especially orphanges. The number of homeless, parentless and abandon children have escalated in the last few years.

I'm curious as to who you define as my own - pray - do tell!
It is not necessarily true that homes in GT get all the (more) attention. People tend to give support to the causes they know and those closest to their former homes. I'm sure that charitable Berbicians give to the causes in Berbice rather than GT ....

I've spent the last couple of weeks talking to various people at organizations focused on helping the poor of Guyana, and what I've heard is heartbreaking and enraging. The poor cannot even make basic ends meet. Children are starving. They have no clothes, no shoes not even underwear. Young girls not even in their teens are prostituting themselves for a meal or piece of clothing. Families live in homes with mud floors. Water is a luxury.
There are countless crimes against children. Trafficking is at an all time high. Criminals are not being prosecuted. All this while their president builds himself multi-million dollar homes. Wtf is going on in that country? Where is the outrage?
