Parvati Persaud-Edwards fired for penning Chronicle editorial - Editor Rashid Osman suspended

Parvati Persaud-Edwards

Freelance journalist Parvati Persaud-Edwards has been relieved of her duties at the Guyana Chronicle for penning the recent editorial that sparked outrage over its alleged racist content.

Kaieteur News understands that the decision to fire Persaud-Edwards was made by the Chronicle’s Board of Directors.

According to sources, the Board has also decided to suspend Editor Raschid Osman, since he is the editor who was on duty at the time when the editorial was published.

Osman is on leave at present but he is to be notified of the disciplinary action when he resumes duty.

The incendiary editorial, which was published on July 3, 2012, claimed that young African Guyanese youths are “socialized” by the opposition to rob and murder Indian Guyanese. The editorial concluded that “hatred of Indians is ingrained in their psyche.”

Its publishing caused condemnation from several organizations and prominent citizens, with some calling for a boycott of the state-owned entity.

This prompted the Chronicle’s Chairman of the Board of Directors Keith Burrowes to issue an apology.

“Though I was not directly involved in the oversight of this publication nor was I aware of its contents, this article still should not have passed the Editor’s desk and eventually went to publication,” Burrowes noted.

According to Burrowes, the views expressed in the publication by no means represent the majority of shareholders, the Board nor the Management and staff of Chronicle.

“It should be noted that the action has and will be taken against those (the Editor –who was on duty – and the writer of the article) who were responsible for this particular publication and if it is found that there were others who contributed to the article, the relevant disciplinary actions will be taken.”

This is very unfortunate because I don't think that Parvati is a racist.  She was married to a man who was half black.  She was a close associate of the late Dr.Walther Rodney.  Her daughter was the wife of Benschop.  She is the grandmother of Benchop's son.  That is not a racist person.

This is why she was fired by the evil PPP. Her black connections got her marginalized!  Note she never made ambassador too!

Stop talking nonsense. The lady wrote her mind.People disagreed. She was relieved of her duties. The debate goes on and Guyanese are the better for it. It's healthy to have these discussions about race.

OK . . . then you should avail yourself of the many opportunities in America to be educated on what would actually constitute "censorship" in this particular context.

"Ignorant" would have been better

Now I fully understand why she wrote such crap. She had a blackman as a husband and now she hate every blackman. Further more her son in law Benshop used to target Indians and have them beat up so more fuel to the fire.

Even better, she made an objective but straight-shooting assessment and she got mauled for it.  There is definitely some personal experiences wound up in her opinion but clearly, the PPP preferred some appeasement over her rights.  On the other hand, I could understand the sensitivity of the Govt.

Do some of you even understand that an EDITORIAL represents the voice of the PUBLISHER!!

So, let's see now:

Over the years, the Chronicle has used its 'letters' page to PLANT [with impunity] similar vile outpourings in the public domain on occasions too numerous to count . . . "T. King" anyone?

Parvati Persaud-Edwards has NO "constitutional rights" to be protected here. As for 'employment' rights . . . she is a freelancer.

That "Black man" haters such as Baseman are slobbering all over this piece is instructive; and while the true provenance of the editorial and the intent/character of the writer may be up for debate, it is not an excuse to pretend that the action of the board was unfair.

Common decency required no less on their part.

So I take it that you agree with Parvati. Then you wonder why many blacks feel that Guyana is a cursed land for them.

Parvati put on Paper what the rest of the Country known as FACTS but Politics as usual, the Govy MUST appease. FACTs BABY FACTS. THE TRUTH SHALL SET YOU FREE. Now, if anyone want to discuss/debate Ms Persaud writing, let us go.

Curiously, the freelancer who penned the editorial got 'fired' while the Editor who APPROVED its publication is still on the job.

I suspect this is because the true editor of the Editorial Page is officed in Freedom House.

Freddie has proven to be a greater information resource than the chronicle. The firing of this lady may attempt at damage control but the internal discourse of that culture was opened itself for the viewing public with this article. The writer was simply reiterating what is common belief in the PPP and among Indians in general. It is the curse of our sociopolitical system.

She wrote the article so the sentiment has to come from a persisting source. It was published so it is clear it has resonance in the society. Here on the site is an example of concurrence with that belief. I dare say many from TI to Baseman to Nehru to Rev Al to Ramkant has voiced similar views here.

The Chronicle is a State owned paper. Its editorial page is NOT the place for sectarian war propaganda.

Chronicle board to discuss action over racist editorial -  AFC wants Ramotar to speak out

July 12, 2012 | By | Filed Under News -- Source

The Parliamentary opposition party, Alliance For Change, has called for President Donald Ramotar to speak out on the “racist” July 2 Chronicle editorial.

“The AFC demands a full retraction of the editorial by the Chronicle and an apology to all Guyanese, and in particular, to African-Guyanese.   Also, in his capacity as Minister of Information, we demand a statement on the issue from President Ramotar,” the AFC stated yesterday.

Robert Corbin

The editorial, which suggested that young African Guyanese are “socialized” by the opposition to rob and murder Indo-Guyanese, has sparked outrage and generated protests and public burning of the newspaper.

GNNL Board Chairman Keith Burrowes had issued an apology over the editorial and had hinted at disciplinary action against the writer, the editor on duty and others who were involved.

The writer of the editorial was Parvatti-Persaud Edwards, a freelance writer. The Guyana Chronicle has been unable to contact her since the protests.  She has decided to sever ties with the newspaper, according to a conversation she has had with some people.

Mr Raschid Osman, the editor at the time, is on leave, and would be dealt with when he returns to work.

Burrowes said, recently, that the Chronicle has a code of ethics and this was not adhered to. He said a copy of the code has been circulated to staff again.

Burrowes, in his apology published last Sunday, said the editorial should not have passed the Editor’s desk. Burrowes said that the views expressed in the publication by no means represent the majority of shareholders, the Board nor the Management and staff of Chronicle.

Burrowes said that while he understands the frustration that has led to the protests, he finds it ironic that the very ones who are protesting have publicly said, that they don’t read the Guyana Chronicle.

“It’s a double standard. Suddenly they realize that the Chronicle exists and they can protest against it,” Burrowes told Kaieteur News.

However, Burrowes in an earlier interview had said that he was willing to meet with anyone who wants to discuss the issue.

The PNCR, the main party in the opposition coalition APNU, has deliberately stayed away from commenting on the issue, leader Robert Corbin said yesterday.

Corbin said the PNCR believes that the ruling PPP wanted to “bait” the party into getting into a political quarrel, but it resisted and was “happy” that civil society, social activists and the media have been the ones championing the campaign against the editorial.

Corbin said he believes that the issue is best served if it is not transformed into a PNCR/PPP issue.

“We’re very happy the way the issue has been frontally dealt with,” Corbin said, referring to the actions of civil society and the social activists.

The AFC accused the ruling PPP of backing and engineering “heinous anonymous writings including scurrilous personal attacks” in the state media and on internet blogs.

Gerhard Ramsaroop

“This is totally unacceptable and must stop. The most shameless thing about this is that taxpayers’ money is used in this enterprise; we are paying for the fomenting of division in our own society and for attacks on ourselves!” AFC executive Gerhard Ramsaroop stated.

He called for an immediate reform in the state media apparatus along the lines of how the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) operates.

“We demand its immediate depolitisation and the establishment of a new board drawn from distinguished resident and non-resident Guyanese to oversee its operations.  Finally, all hate internet blog sites, whether pro-government or opposition must be also shut down, with immediate effect,” Ramsaroop stated.

You would be laughing a lot since your joker is in the mirror. The word is "Stalin" and not Stallin. Gerhard is not a communist. You needs to look in the ranks of the PPP to source your Stalins

In YOUR perception Freddie is a greater information resource because he writes what YOU want to hear.  I would not label the content as common belief in the PPP and among Indians.

The opinion among some in GT is Freddie writings and rantings reflect a struggle within himself and tries to contextualize as some national [Indian] psyche.  Actually, it his psyche at play.  He is given much more importance than he is due.  He has very little readership and ear in Guyana and we here on this blogs probably pay him the most attention.

When Guyana is finally liberated from the clutches of this criminal PPP gang, I will donate money and raise funds to endow a journalism chair in Freddie Kissoon's name @ the University of Guyana.

Well, hope you have a lot of patience and is very young.  However, a more practical suggestion, take your money and go do some projects for kids in the villages which you are so concerned about.  They will surely appreciate it and you will find a diversion from your apparently frustrated and boring life.  Understand, the PPP will be there and for a long time and you cannot change that.

He writes the truth. The fact that it is often unsourced or hints at source i and full of innuendos are his failings. But in a society where the PPP has agents who could kill you for a quid one has to be careful so on the first part he can be given some latitude. On the second he can be chastised.

You find me a lie you know he deliberately pedaled for political ends then speak to that.  That this party has not acknowledged we have a race problem is the problem. This lady is delineating a common belief among Indians that they are the quintessential victims because of their industry and the blacks" are their victimizers because "blacks" are prone to indolence and the pursuit of easy cash.

The reality is that this PPP is a corrupt, autocratic cabal who see the state as a prize to be organized for their personal enrichment. If it comes a the expense of Indian fear and African scapegoating then so be it. My position is  that because they accept this as status quo makes them unfit.
