Traditionally in Guyana, December 15 is pay day for public servants, teachers, policemen, soldiers, nurses etc. It's a day highly anticipated because of the Christmas shopping season. In my time I used to throw a box-hand with workmates and collect my lump sum on December 15. I understand that some teachers are still throwing box-hand, a small man's way of building a nest egg.
Today public servants will get their regular pay plus a measly $25,000 "bonus". It should have been more and the GPSU has rightly deplored it. As it happens, this coincides with the revelation of the names of government scholarship awardees and the sums of expenses incurred. Disappointment and frustration are growing among coalition supporters and others.
