My 8 years old wishes to learn to play piano. I need some advise on what piano to get him. Since I am not sure how serious he is I would prefer a practical but affordable one. From the little I know, I at least need an 88 keys weighted one. I need help on brand and where I should get it. Thanks.

You might want to try and rent or get one on loan.... just in case the kid changes his mind later. Check with a reputable music school in your area.

Thanks Chami and Mits. I love piano music. He and I were at Best Buy today and he seem to have the touch.
For a starter get one that shows on an LCD display what key is pressed. Casio and Yamaha do a few of these. Later on in life you can get a more advanced one.
We had one like the above. Now we have twp. One is just the keyboard that connects to a PC for use with Reason and Sybelius. The 2nd one is a full wooden electronic keyboard for semi professional use.

I saw this one at Best Buy today. What you think of it?

How about this one? The Casio Previa at the store sounded really nice.

These two are priced at $550.
The Casio is VERY good for the price. We got the PX-730, but there is very little difference between them. The only downside is that you have to remember to switch it off. The on/off light is not so obvious. It's also a commitment on space. So choose carefully where you are going to put it, because it's going to remain there for a very long time.

Thanks for the info. I really liked the sound of the Casio.

Ksaz, tell us which one you decide on.
Is your daughter excited to finish up "regular" high school? Ready for BCC for the 11th and 12th grades?

I believe I will go with tha Casio. We are about to go to the Sam Ash store in Miami Lakes to get it. My daughter did not get accepted because she had too many absences at school. It is unfortunate because she is so bright. Perhaps the biggest reason that she has so many absences because she stays home when there is nothing really going on at school. She will have to settle for the dual enrollment which she plans to start during the summer break. Hopefully she has learned that having a close to 5 GPA is not enough.

Keep us posted on the piano playing!
This setback is a minor one for your daugther. She's bright and will do well at any school. What's considered "so many absences"? What's your role in her decision about not attending school when "nothing" is going on?

I have grown accustomed to letting my daughter decide her action. She has proven capable to know what she needs to do. She could easily have an absence every two weeks. She does not go to school when others are making up classes or exams. I discussed it with the school and they told me that she is doing fine so they are not concerned. She does not have much tolerance for pain and is not physically strong which also affect her attendance. It would have been a great opportunity but it is now lost. Now she has to start thinking about other avenues. Both kids have college plans so that was never the goal. It was more a race with the clock.

KORG SP250 88 Cheap. sturdy portable and performance capable.
I used to have a Korg and Roland, I gave them away as I hardly used them, I enjoyed playing an old Yamaha HS6 I had with double keyboard. I started by playing Beatles as the songs were very simple chords and notes.
The Yamaha is similar to this

Korg and Roland are my favourite brands.
Then there is Farfisa.

Some of you have missed the plot. Is his 8 year old son who is going to be playing the piano. Don't scare off the poor guy with a host of complex looking alternatives.

Thanks again folks. I thought that Korg was not a recognized brand but I guess I was wrong. A co-worker offered me this one free but I don't know how useful it would be. I would have gotten the Casio Privia PX-130 yesterday but Best Buy didn't have it at the store as they do now so I will get it tomorrow.
