Police investigating soap opera-style blackmail scheme

- businesswoman videotaped in bed with other woman’s husband
It’s the stuff that movies are made of. In an episode that bears a striking resemblance to the ‘Young and the Restless’ or ‘African Moods’, similar soap operas, the police at the Sparendaam Police Station are investigating the alleged blackmail of a woman who was caught in a hotel bed with another woman’s husband.
The drama involves the wife of a soldier and a Berbice businesswoman, in which the two women are the stars.
For confidentiality sake, the names of the ‘actors’ have been changed.
This is the plot: the businesswoman, Avril, was having an affair with the soldier. The wife of the soldier Glenys, found out about the relationship and plotted a scheme to expose her rival. But her scheme backfired and she is now in hiding after securing $100,000 station bail on allegations of demanding money with menace or more precisely – blackmail.
Glenys claimed that two Saturdays ago she found out that her husband had planned a rendezvous with Avril at a popular East Coast Demerara hotel. She had suspected her husband was having an affair with Avril for a while and was buoyed by the opportunity of catching them red-handed. After all, her husband had vehemently denied every time he was confronted.
It is still unclear if what followed was the truth.
Glenys managed to follow her husband clandestinely to the hotel and waited in a taxi for the right moment when she would put her plot into action.
Avril had not yet arrived, so Glenys watched as her husband secured a room on the bottom floor of the hotel and went in.
The opportunity that Glenys was waiting for soon presented itself as her husband left the room and went to purchase a beverage from the hotel’s bar.
Since her husband had left the door of the room open, Glenys hurriedly entered it and secreted herself behind an empty wardrobe, from where she watched her husband re-enter and drop himself satisfactorily on to the bed.
Glenys must have thought of giving up since she had to wait for almost three hours for Avril, who was coming from out of town, to turn up. But the vulture is a patient bird.
Sure enough, Avril turned up and since she was given the room number by Glenys’ husband via telephone, she had no problem finding where he was.
From all appearances this type of arrangement was routine.
Glenys watched as her husband and Avril sat on the bed and chatted for a while before they both began preparing to get down to business.
Glenys could wait no longer and as soon as Avril took off her clothes, she emerged from behind the wardrobe with her camera phone in her hand and began to record the scene.
One only has to imagine the shock on the faces of the two cheating persons, and this was capitalised on by Glenys, who went on the offensive.
Holding the door, she bluffed that she had the media waiting outside to step in if necessary and then she commenced instituting her plan.
She had her husband and Avril where she wanted them, since they were both naked. Her husband tried to grab the phone but Glenys who had a bottle in her hand, threatened to “buss open” his head if he only “did anything stupid.”
He must have known that hell hath no scorn than a woman’s fury, so he stood his ground.
Avril too did not want to take chances, since she desperately felt that she could reason her way out of the predicament. She began pleading with Glenys to compromise woman-to-woman, after all ,if what Glenys was recording ever reached her husband, it would be the end of her marriage and total humiliation.
Glenys made her move and proposed a cash reward for her not to expose what she was recording.
The figure started at $2M but was then broken down to $1.5M.
Now Avril had no intention of paying that money, but she just wanted to play for time to bargain her way out, so she agreed to the deal.
Embarrassed, Avril and the soldier eventually left the hotel, their rendezvous devastatingly ended.
A day passed and Glenys did not hear from Avril about the money that was promised so she called her cell number to press her demands. But Avril kept stalling. Eventually, she stopped answering her phone whenever she saw that it was Glenys calling.
This situation frustrated a desperate Glenys, who resorted to sending text messages reiterating her demands.
One of the messages seen by this newspaper reads, “I am giving you two days to pay me my f#@*ing money”.
That was her mistake.
The ploy still did not work and she became so impatient that she resorted to open confrontation with Avril in public. She even began showing selected persons the images that she had captured on her phone, effectively diminishing her main bargaining chip.
By this time, Avril’s husband got word of the fiasco, and of course, the die was cast.
Since her marriage had been shattered by the impromptu exposure of the video recording, Avril now had nothing to lose if she refused to give in to Glenys’ demands.
The ball was now in Avril’s court.
She must have been advised that she was dealing with a criminal matter, so she contacted the police with the text message evidence of Glenys’ demands.
The police must have felt so, too, for they promptly arrested Glenys and held her at the Sparendaam Police Station for almost an entire day, before eventually putting her on $100,000 bail while they sought the advice of the Director of Public Prosecutions on the matter.
While the police had evidence of the text messages, they were still not in possession of the vital piece of evidence – a copy of the video recording which was the dangling carrot used to facilitate the blackmail.
And they were eager to possess it.
But the plot thickened, for Avril’s husband was now brought into the picture after he was contacted by Glenys who was now desperate to get back at the businesswoman.
Glenys arranged to hand a copy of the video over to Avril’s husband and they arranged to meet at a specific location.
But then there is a twist in the saga.
Glenys, realizing that her plan had unraveled miserably and she may not succeed in getting the money from Avril, no matter what, changed her strategy and targeted Avril’s husband.
Shortly before she met with Avril’s husband she secretly reported to police at the Mahaica Station that the man had tried to have sex with her against her will.
So when he turned up to meet her, he was duly arrested.
Of course the man denied the allegations and investigators silently believed his story.
He had also managed to collect the DVD recording that Glenys had promised him and he readily made it available to the police, who now had a vital piece of the puzzle to nail Glenys.
But by then, Glenys, sensing that everything was crumbling around her, disappeared. When police tried to contact her on her cell phone they were met with silence.
It’s been a week now since Glenys disappeared and investigators are still awaiting the advice of the DPP.
Should they be advised to charge Glenys, several questions are bound to be asked to which there could be some very interesting answers.
One question that is bound to be asked is whether or not Glenys’ husband was a part of her scheme, given the way things had played out. For one, he was fully aware that Avril was ‘loaded’ since she had been providing him with gifts throughout their secret relationship.
Avril on her part does not want to believe that she had been set up by her secret lover. But she had learnt a very hard lesson. Don’t mess around with another woman’s husband, especially when you have your own. For now she and her husband have temporarily reconciled since they both have one thing in common – they were both victims of Glenys’ schemes. Look out for episode two!
