Subject: PPP up to old tricks

... SOME OBSERVERVATIONS ON POLLING DAY ON THE WEST BANK DEMERARA 28th Nov 2011.
This morning I toured the polling places on the West Bank Demerara and made the following observations:
1. There was an early and strong turnout in Afro communities.
2. Turn out in the Indo communiities such as Canals polder was slow but steady.
3. At Middle Dam, La Grange there were PPP activists at 2 points from the place of poll. They had voters lists and they stopped voters and made a point of marking off their names. One group was very hostile to me whilst the other group said, “we doing we homework.”
4. At Kawall Primary School, Canal # 1, there was a man at the bridge leading to the polling place and he was doing a jig and chanting, “vote PPP, vote PPP,” as voters crossed the bridge.
5. At West Demerara Secondary School there was a group of PPP activists on the road. They had a stack of ID cards which was being distributed to voters along with a slip of paper. Voters refused to say how the PPP got their ID cards and what the slip of paper was for. I suspect it was for payment to be collected later in the day. The PPP activists were using vehicle # PJJ 1298.
6. At Goed Intent a patrol of Division D Community Policing Group was present, although the Commissioner of Police had on 24th Nov assured APNU that they would not be involved in security duties on election day. The CPG members were all Indo Guyanese dressed in dark sunglasses, dark blue vests, black trousers, black boots and carrying large hand held communications set. They had an intimidating presence in an Indo Guyanese community.
