over 310 tonnes exported for first half of 2016

DESPITE the challenges facing the rice industry, the Guyana Rice Development Board (GRDB) has indicated that a total of 310,923 tonnes of rice, valued at $29.9 billion, was exported between January-July, 2016.However, General Manager of the GRDB, Nizam Hassan, during a recent interview with the Guyana Chronicle revealed that this is a decrease in the quantity exported when compared to the same period last year.
He said this is due to the fact that Venezuela pulled out of the rice agreement with Guyana, causing stakeholders to lose a premium market and having to sell on an open market.
The general manager also noted that the price for rice has been continuously dipping on the world market over the past few years, which also resulted in the pricing of the products being altered.
According to statistics shared with this publication, Jamaica continues to be one of the largest importers of rice from Guyana, importing a total of 29,594 tonnes of rice, valued at $2.5 billion during the period of January-July, 2016.
Recently, the Guyana Rice Exporters and Millers Association (GREMA) had expressed displeasure with the signing of a rice deal with Jamaica between Mussons/Jamaica Rice Milling Company Limited (JRMCL) and the GRDB.
A Guyana Chronicle report had indicated, “while on the surface, this agreement appears as though it is intended to increase the price and quantity of rice that millers can export to the Jamaican market, that in reality, the reverse is likely to take place,” the exporter and millers’ body said.
However, figures show that Jamaica continues to be one of the more lucrative markets for Guyana’s rice industry.
Meanwhile, the European Union during the said period imported 169,247 tonnes of rice from Guyana, valued $10.2 billion, while Latin America recorded $6.9 billion, the United States of America, $36 million and West Africa $2 Million.
Nevertheless, when compared to last year, the value of exports during the period January-July has been reduced by approximately $6.6 billion, at a total of 4,849 tonnes.
During the first crop for this year, an initial target of 91,072 hectares for sowing was set, but due to the El Niño period it was revised to 73,405 hectares of land. This, Hassan said, resulted in the production of 410,033 tonnes of paddy for the first-crop period, January-July.
SECOND CROP
Meanwhile, as harvesting for the second crop (autumn crop) begins, the GRDB has set a target of 92,958 hectares to be sown, which was revised due to the rainy weather and set at 86,532 hectares.
According to Hassan, the GRDB will aim to achieve 469,743 tonnes of paddy at a yield of 5.4 tonnes of paddy per hectare. Hassan also noted that the GRDB is exploring new markets, with the hope of achieving a premium price for their produce.
Hassan also used the opportunity to reiterate the fact that millers who owe huge sums of money to rice farmers in 2016 will not be granted operating licences until a legitimate reason is given, or the farmers are paid.

Over 60% of rice in Region Six is under threat, according to President of the Rice Producers’ Association (RPA) Leekha Rambrich, who says farmers could lose millions of dollars due to dereliction by pump operators at Black Bush Polder.

Rambrich told Stabroek News that rice fields from No 51 Village to Whim on the Corentyne are affected by the actions of the operators, who have refused to turn the pumps on.

According to him, the four pump operators, who are staying at a house in the compound of the pump station, are upset that they are not being provided with electricity.

Describing the problem, which the farmers have been facing for one week now as serious, Rambrich said, “Their livelihood is under threat and millions of dollars in investment is going down the drain.”

He is outraged that the operators are being allowed to get away with their behaviour and wondered why the “regional administration tolerating this nonsense? They [the operators] should have been dismissed on the stop.”

He added: “Since last week farmers have been demanding water but nobody is making a decision about it.”

The RPA head said too that the National Drainage & Irrigation Authority (NDIA) is aware of the situation but no action is being taken. He accuses the head of the NDIA, Frederick Flatts, of “not working in favour of the farmers.”

He also wants the Minister of Agriculture Noel Holder to “stop sleeping and come out and reach with farmers and understand their plight.”

Rambrich said a small amount of harvesting has commenced in the region and emphasized that the other farmers require water urgently.

Stabroek News made efforts to contact Flatts and the Regional Chairman of Region Six David Armogan but was unsuccessful.

Some one need to address this situation,Berbice seems to always have problems, can these fellas manage.

Berbice is the step child of the PNC. The PNC cannot organize a two car parade or a goat rodeo, how can they manage situations that require some form of intelligence?

I met some rice farmers recently in NY.  They claimed the GoG deliberately shorted them water from the conservancy in a effort to squeeze production.  They all promptly got US visas with a list of willing employers here.  Seems a grand scheme of ethnic cleansing!

Ask Caribj, the Brooklyn crew are well tuned in along with the US Black caucus led by Obama to "Blacken" Guyana.

I am right when I say the RACIST PNC. At least PPP tried to help the PNC dominated areas(ex: Linden), whereas the PNC is trying to squeeze the bread winners, the PPP dominated areas. These people feed the nation. Do you want Guyanese to live on dry coconuts?

Which party is this man with?  The PPP?   So why doesn't he get some of the blame?  Should he not been ensuring that the drainage and irrigation systems were in good order, given the vulnerability of farming to climatic conditions?

This is the problem with Guyana.  Too much is centralized, and too few decision making responsibilities are in the hands of local representatives.

They are quick to compare the PNC actions to the PPP. Keep in mind, it's just over a year the PNC government was installed and we see all this corruption and thieving. My police officer neighbor collected his pension and after going bored to death not working, went back to work since there are a shortage of police officers at his office. I thought it was fortunate for him because it happened just around the time of the financial crises and many police and fire departments along with teachers were being targeted as not deserving of their pensions and I believe many were slashed. The point is that he earned that pension based on his retirement from that position and not because he would never work again in his life.

Jagdeo's pension was based on his position as President of Guyana between 1999 and 2011 which incidentally is the period when Guyana and Guyanese experienced the most significant growth and success. That is undeniable. Jagdeo now in a new role after retirement should not be denied his entitlement when he served as president.

1.   In fact the economy was stagnant until 2007, when gold prices increased leading to a massive expansion of that sector.  NOT due to Jagdeo.  I mean I know that you think that he is GOD because he actually is just a bad tempered, foul mouthed, arrogant man.

2.  Guyana remains the poorest country in the English speaking Caribbean, so why does Jagdeo have higher pensions than other heads?

3.  If Jagdeo had integrity he would put his pension on hold and take the Leader of the opposition salary and perks. But he doesn't so he takes the outsized pension.

4. Are you suggesting that Jagdeo deserves a higher pension than the president of the USA?

1.   Is there another president between 1980 and 2011 who left the economy better than when they started their presidency other than Jagdeo and Jagan? And Jagdeo was far more successful. To acknowledge that does not require that someone think that Jagdeo is a God. I don't know why you would require that someone be recognized as God to acknowledge their record.

2.    I am sure that you as someone in business know that there is no correlation between compensations in different places. Even two people having similar functions in the same company don't always have similar compensation. Secondly, even members of the then Opposition, now Coalition government approved Jagdeo's pension.

3.    Integrity from a politician? Now that is a novel idea. If integrity was something expected from politicians, we wouldn't have seen the current government's first action be a 50% salary increase when they had not yet done anything else.

4.    See answer to 2. Secondly, Obama is far richer than Jagdeo and after he leaves office, his pension would still be the least amount of any of his income sources and will continue to be richer than Jagdeo.

You are the one who is virtually calling Jagdeo Lord God Almighty, maker of all things perfect.   I have had my say of Granger and Harmon and its certainly not positive.

Given that you worship Jagdeo then one would expect that you would think that he would have integrity.  The man is greedy grabbing for money just like Harmon.

Guyana had growth in 2011 because of gold.  Now let us discuss the sector that Jagdeo had most control over. GUYSICKO.  Now where is the evidence that this magician, who you claim Jagdeo to be, did a good job with Guysuco.  Thanks to him Guysuco has debts of US$400 million DESPITE receiving $500 million in bail outs.

Yes I do know that compensation in poorer countries is usually less than in wealthier ones.  So why is Jagdeo getting more pension than his equivalents in T&T, Barbados, and The Bahamas?  So we don't even have to get to Obama.

Jagdeo met Guyana as the poorest and least developed country in the English speaking Caribbean, and he left it in the same way. Sorry no magic there, as under his rule tens of thousands of Guyanese fled to other parts of the Caribbean.

So bad that in some islands Guyanese are 10% of their populations, and in Antigua 15%!

Bai, you need to come back after you clear your mind. You are all over the map seeking to argue what is inarguable.

Aaah.  Another one who cannot respond to me and so writes inane nonsense.

You claim that Jagdeo is an economic magician.  I tell you that gold prices led the growth and that Jagdeo destroyed Guysuco despite pouring half a billion dollars into it.

Is this hard for you to grasp and respond to?

I am telling you that Jagdeo is just as greedy as you accuse Harmon of being?  Hard for you to grasp?

Guyana is the poorest country in the Caribbean, aside from Haiti, and yet Jagdeo's pension is one of the highest.  Jagdeo should have a pension less than that of the PM of Dominica, because we are POORER!

To this effect, I point you back to my very first response to your comment and draw your attention to how your argument has evolved all over the place on that comment. My comment was based specifically on him earning that pension for work already retired from, not on all work completed of currently working on. His pension does not include his work as Finance Minister or other roles prior to being president. Now my decision not to follow you all over the map has nothing to do with me being unable to respond to anything you pose. I just determine that they are all just wild goose chases.

Did Jagdeo put his pension hold, given that he is not retired, and is in fact the Leader of the Opposition?  NO!

FACT. AT no point in Jagdeo's era as president was Guyana anything other than LAST in its human development index ratings, its educational attainment, the access of its population to indoor plumbing and internet access, or GDP per capita, when compared to other countries in the English speaking Caribbean.

Yet Jagdeo pays himself a pension HIGHER than that of any other head of state in the English speaking Caribbean.

This isn't meandering.  This is YOU evading a fact. Jagdeo is greedy, corrupt and arrogant, and only Guyanese are docile enough to accept this.

After this stunt and he has the balls to criticize other politicians for being greedy?  In addition your cop friend doesn't have the ability to take whatever pension that he wishes for himself. He gets only that which his union contract allows!
