SADHANA: THEN AND NOW

Shivdasani was born in 1941 and named after her father's favorite actress Sadhana Bose, her father and actor Hari Shivdasani were biological brothers. Her cousin is actress Babita, the daughter of actor Hari Shivdasani and mother to actresses Karisma & Kareena Kapoor. She was one of two sisters, Sarla was the eldest. Her mother home-schooled her until she was 8 years old. The family fled from Karachi in Pakistan during Post Partition riots.

When she was 15 years old, she was discovered by some producers who had seen her act in a college play. They cast her in India's first Sindhi film titled Abana (1958), where she played the heroine's younger sister for which she was paid a token of Rps. 1. A photograph of her publicizing the film appeared in a movie magazine[which?]. Sashadhar Mukherjee, one of India's producers at that time, saw the magazine and gave her the lead role in her first Hindi film Love in Simla (1959), opposite his newcomer son, Joy Mukherjee. The film was directed by another newcomer, R.K. Nayyar, who created her trademark look called 'the Sadhana fringe.'

9) BEDARDI BALAMA TUJHKO MERA MAN YAAD KARTA HAI

(Bedardii baalamaa tujhako meraa man yaad kartaa hai)2
O Heartless lover, my heart is remembering you
Barasataa hai jo aankhoon se vo saavan yaad kartaa hai
The flowing tears from my eyes are remembering you
Bedardii baalamaa tujhako meraa man yaad kartaa hai
O Heartless lover, my heart is remembering you

Kabhii ham saath guzre jin sajiilii raha guzaaroon se
At one time this was the road that we traveled on together
Fizaa ke bhes mein girate hain ab patte chanaaron se
In pretext of autumn, the leaves of chinar(maple) are falling
Ye raahein yaad kartii hain ye gulashan yaad kartaa hai
These roads remember you and the spring remembers you

Bedardii baalamaa tujhako meraa man yaad kartaa hai
O Heartless lover, my heart is remembering you
Barasata hai jo ankhoon se vo saavan yaad kartaa hai
The flowing tears from my eyes are remembering you
Bedardii baalamaa tujhako meraa man yaad kartaa hai
O Heartless lover, my heart is remembering you

Koii jhonkaa havaa kaa jab meraa anchal udaataa hai
When the whiff of breeze touches my clothes
Gumaan hotaa hai jaise tu meraa daaman hilaataa hai
I get the feeling that those touchings are yours
Kabhi chuuma thaa jo tuune vo daman yaad karataa hai
The chunri/sari that you had kissed, remembers you

Bedardii baalamaa tujhako meraa man yaad kartaa hai
O Heartless lover, my heart is remembering you
Barasataa hai jo aankhoon se vo saavan yaad kartaa hai
The flowing tears from my eyes are remembering you
Bedardii baalamaa tujhako meraa man yaad kartaa hai
O Heartless lover, my heart is remembering you

Vo hii hain jhiil ke mandar vo hii kiranon ki barasaatein
The temples by the lake in the bright sunlight is the same
Jahaan ham tum kiyaa karate the paharon pyaar kii baatein
Where we use to meet and talk about our love for each other
Tujhe is jhiil kaa Kaamosh darpan yaad kartaa hai
Now the quiet water of the lake is remembering you

Bedardii baalamaa tujhako meraa man yaad kartaa hai
O Heartless lover, my heart is remembering you
Barasataa hai jo aankhoon se vo saavan yaad kartaa hai
The flowing tears from my eyes are remembering you
Bedardii baalamaa tujhako meraa man yaad kartaa hai
O Heartless lover, my heart is remembering you

Alex bhai, she was a dish in her days (the sixties) fans used to dream about her, Big Grin Then came Saira Banu and she bowled us all over for beauty. Everyone wanted a beauty like Saira. By the time I was quite quite over with that phase, I had my fantasies fulfilled and had my own Saira to deal with. Now it is all nostalgia, taking that walk down memory lane, it commands that mischeivous smile now and again.

SADHANA: THEN AND NOW

Classic! Sadhna in Bimal Roy’s "Prem Patra".

Recently talking about earlier actresses, Tabu said, “One actress I will never forget is Sadhna. She was the ideal combination of innocence, beauty and intelligence. I will always remember her as a haunting actress in ‘Parakh’, ‘Hum Dono’ and ‘Woh Kaun Thi’. Her dialogue delivery was really sweet with inimitable modulations.” The same view is endorsed by Vidya Balan.

Sadhna is a name unknown to today’s fast food generation who think the ultimate divas are the Aishwarya Rais, Rani Mukerjis and Bipasha Basus. It has no idea about what a glorious past Indian cinema had and how prestigious is Sadhna’s contribution to films.

Once in 1958, Dev Anand was on a visit to Filmalaya Studio. At the Filmalaya acting school he came across a bubbling, spontaneous young girl with highly expressive eyes and a beautiful smile. Dev Anand personally walked up to her and complimented her saying, “You are a very pretty girl. You will make it really big as an actress.” His prediction was true as Sadhna indeed became the reigning queen of the swinging ‘60s.

Sadhna was introduced to films with “Love In Shimla” opposite Joy Mukherji and directed by R.K. Nayar, who later became her husband. With Raj Khosla’s “Ek Musafir Ek Hasina”, Sadhna sky rocketed to fame and never looked back. She remembers, “I had high ambitions of making it as an actress. I knew I would face stiff competition from stalwarts like Meena Kumari, Nutan, Waheeda Rahman and Nanda. I lovingly accepted the challenge of proving my worth as an actress.”

Films like “Hum Dono”, “Prem Patra” and “Parakh” followed. Bimal Ray’s X-ray eyes noticed the rare talent in Sadhna and he rightly cast her in “Parakh” and “Prem Patra”.
