The legendary actor who passed away early this morning (August 14) was due to jam with Ranbir Kapoor in Imtiaz Ali's Rockstar. Latest reports say Ranbir was obviously excited and had been rehearsing.
"In my younger days, I used to play the shehnai or would enact it to perfection. I think I can do it today, also," Shammi Kapoor had said, of the scene in which he was to play the shehnai and Ranbir the guitar.
"As a child, Ranbir would sit on my lap and sing classical music to me. He wasn't trained in that but did it just to bug me," the legendary actor said.

SHAMMI KAPOOR PASSED AWAY:

Saying goodbye to Shammi Kapoor
Mumbai Mirror | Aug 16, 2011, 11.13AM IST

It was an end of an era. 79 years that had more life in it than a million. And for the last rites of the very man, Shammi Kapoor at Banganga on Monday morning, Bollywood turned up to show how much he was revered.

While the entire Kapoor clan stood by one another, Anil Ambani and Amitabh Bachchan too helped the Kapoor brothers carry the legend on his last journey from his Malabar Hills residence. Aamir Khan came to bid final adieu to the man he considered to be his lucky charm.

Yash Chopra, Rakesh Roshan, Anil Kapoor, Fardeen Khan, Shatrughan Sinha, Danny Denzongpa, Vinod Khanna, Prakash Jha, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Madhuri Dixit, Priyanka Chopra, Govinda, Ashutosh Gowariker, Kabir Bedi, you pick a name and they were there for the man the country loved and respected.

Remembering his older brother and sitting on his wheelchair was Balbir Raj aka Shashi Kapoor.

The man said to be extremely close to his elder sibling Shammi, had been hospitalised along with the late actor in January this year.

Both brothers had then refused to be taken abroad for further treatment wanting to be with their family instead.

Soon after, Shashi had received the third highest civilian award, the Padma Bhushan. Shammi however was left out from the list.

But the lovable Junglee did not just belong to Bollywood. He belonged to India. He belonged to the masses. And if the crowd outside the crematorium, that the cops were having much trouble to control, was anything to go by, his fans surely made for a huge number.

There were people on the tin roof of buildings around. There were fan sitting atop watertanks of terraces.

There were even fans filing up on the road outside to catch a last glimpse of the man who made Kashmir a hot tourist spot way back in the 1960s.

It's never easy to say goodbye. And thus, to remember the legend, his family organised for a prayer meeting on Tuesday at Blue Sea, Worli between 5pm-7pm.

However, for most of us, Shammi Kapoor will always be remembered every time we see snow, or visit a hill station, or feel like doing the tango, or drive a hatchback jeep or simply sing a song. Shamsher Raj Kapoor, the legend will live on.

SHAMMI KAPOOR PASSED AWAY:

Why there will never be another Shammi Kapoor!
Meena IyerMeena Iyer, TNN | Aug 15, 2011

There is a lot I remember about Shammi Kapoor. When the news of his death flashed on the morning of August 14, 2011, several memories of Bollywood's dashing and swashbuckling legend jostled for space in my memory.

While I may need to write several pages to truly do justice to the 79-year-old actor, who made a permanent place for himself in Indian film history with his inimitable dance moves and his yahooisms through the 50s-70s; three decades during which he acted in super hits like Tumsa Nahin Dekha, Professor, Junglee, Kashmir Ki Kali, Ujjala, Teesri Manzil, Brahmachari and Andaz; the first picture that came to mind was a fairly recent one.

I was at Shammi Kapoor's South Mumbai home to interview him when his bhabhi Krishna Kapoor arrived. And it was truly touching to see Shammi wheel himself out to bend and touch Krishna's feet. It was a routine gesture but it brought a lump to my throat. The act said a lot about the tehzeeb (the culture) that the Kapoors; at least the Raj, Shammi, Shashi generation were proud about.

The actor who was suffering from a kidney ailment had to make regular trips to Mumbai's Breach Candy Hospital for his dialysis. Often he would get fever for a day or two after his dialysis and suffered severe discomfort. But his zest was always Kapoorish - in other words, larger than life. "I've seen life, I've seen too many deaths," he often said lamenting the loss of his father Prithviraj Kapoor, his elder brother Raj Kapoor, his samdhi, film-maker Manmohan Desai, his first wife, actress Geeta Bali.

Till the end, his father Prithviraj remained the greatest influence in his life. Manmohan Desai often said, "My first brush with superstardom came when I directed Shammi Kapoor. He, according to me, is India's first superstar and the most stylish actor ever seen by Bollywood." A true-blue Libran Shammi was fond of all things beautiful and though he had let himself go in his later years to being obese, he still had an unmatched sense of style. Dressed in spotless white pyjamas with coloured kurtas, a huge teeka adorning his forehead and a rudraksh round his neck, the actor's grey-blue eyes and beard rendered him handsome even till a few years ago.

Vishwapratap, one could almost feel the walls of his house tremble because of the sheer impact of his personality. While recounting tales of his youth, Shammi confessed to sowing a few wild oats in the days before he married superstar Geeta Bali.

However he hated the tag of a flirt. "We were very discreet with our relationships,'' he said. And defended his wild, party animal image with saying, ``I was a bachelor and I was earning well. Naturally I was gave into certain temptations."'

For someone who grew up in the shadow of being India's biggest showman Raj Kapoor's brother and later being superstar Geeta Bali's husband, Shammi carved a niche for himself. He often thanked his wife Geeta and his dad for changing him from being a vagabond to a responsible family man and a huge star. "It all happened after my first born Aditya came. I changed after that," he remembered.

Since he wanted a definite image to make his own mark, Shammi shaved of his moustache, cut his jeans and came sliding down snow mountains with his ecleptic fits on the screen. He stayed in Chembur and saw his stardom reach heights. Life was a dream till he lost Geeta in January 1967.

He often confessed that he tried to drown his sorrows in alcohol and affairs but he was pulled out of his misery by his second wife Neela Devi. His quest for spiritualism led him to a sober innings...and in the end the only thing that excited him was technology. The net savvy actor who was an inspiration for an entire generation like Aamir Khan and Salman Khan, often spent his time "Yahooing" but this time from his bed-side.

SHAMMI KAPOOR PASSED AWAY:

TRIBUTES TO A GREAT ACTOR:

Imtiaz Ali remembers the Yahoo star
"How are you feeling, sir?", Shammiji asked Rockstar director Imtiaz Ali on one of the days of the shoot. "How am I?", he asked himself. "I have been on dialysis for the last ten years. I am on the wheelchair, I have lost two more toes in an operation a few days back, my tail bone had fractured so I cannot sit for long because I am in pain.... But I am fine. I am fine," he said with a vengeance.

"Shammi Kapoor can't be lamented. We can only lament for ourselves that he has decided to walk away. We all knew that the Rockstar is on set today, and all of us - Ranbir included - were just his attendants," said Ali.

Who knows what will happen tomorrow: Shammi Kapoor
Seema SinhaSeema Sinha, TNN | Aug 14, 2011

Shammi Kapoor's zest for life was simply great, truly unimaginable. One can say that it was not very different from the Junglee days when he had taken a huge leap screaming, " Yahoo!" putting all his energy to fore.

Even as he was suffering from kidney ailment for last many years, and his health failing badly, he never once lost the spirit to live. He would be taken to hospital thrice a week for dialysis process, but the actor would always take phone calls while in the hospital. He always sounded cheerful, never sad or depressed and answered all your queries without complaining. Even if he was busy with the medical procedure in the hospital, he would make sure that he returned your call as soon as he got free. He never ever failed to do that.

I remember calling the actor sometime in February this year for an appointment as a journalist friend of mine living in the US was writing a book on renowned actor Ashok Kumar. Shammi Kapoor readily agreed to meet us but wondered that how come he never did a film with Ashok Kumar. "It is really strange that every actor of my generation had acted in at least one film with the great actor, but I haven't done any except for a Pan Parag ad some time in the early 80s'. I don't know what to talk, but come we will see.." said Shammi.

Shammi Kapoor had the days marked on his calendar he had to go to the Breach Candy hospital for his dialysis procedure. "Can you come today (Wednesday) afternoon?" he asked. When I said it would be difficult as the author of the book wouldn't be around, Shammi sighed, "It would have been good if you could make it today because who knows what will happen tomorrow (laughs)..but anyways then you come and meet me on Saturday."

When we entered his huge apartment in South Mumbai, we could hear the actor singing an old tune that echoed in the massive drawing room, and he made an appearance within few minutes on a wheel chair with an attendant around. What surprised us was that the thespian had his thoughts collected as to what he will be talking about Ashok Kumar. He was totally alert and focused and finished off everything just within 15 minutes. "I had always wanted to do at least one film with Ashok Kumar but since I never got the opportunity, I jumped at the offer of this Pan Parag ad where I could share space with Ashok Kumar. The ad became extremely popular and it remained in people's memory for a very long time," said Shammi.

However, one person who didn't approve of Shammi doing an ad film was his elder brother and noted filmmaker-actor Raj Kapoor. Shammi Kapoor narrated an incident, "Me and my brother Raj were travelling for some shows after the ad was on air. And everywhere the crowd thronging us would start screaming..'Voh dekh Pan parag, Pan parag..' Raj was damn upset. Later, he called me and said sadly, "What happened to your Junglee, Professor..where is all that brilliant work you did, gone? Today you are known for an ad, and that too for a product like Pan Parag' . So I managed to fulfil my dream of working with Ashok Kumar, but earned the ire of my brother Raj."

And obviously, one couldn't help asking him about penning a biography on him. "Let's meet," he said..But like he had said - "Who knows what will happen tomorrow."

British media pays tribute to Shammi Kapoor

Posted: Wed Aug 17 2011, 02:13 hrs
London:

British media on Tuesday paid rich tributes to Bollywood actor Shammi Kapoor attributing his super-stardom to his image makeover as India's answer to Elvis Presley.

Shammi Kapoor, 79, passed away on August 14 of renal failure, was known for his unique style and high energy delivering a number of blockbuster movies especially in the 1950's and 60's.

"Shammi Kapoor's journey to Bollywood stardom began with prolonged and unremitting failure, with film after film bombing while critics savaged his acting, dancing and singing.

The mediocrity of his performances and the banality of the movies in which he starred made him laughable - until he changed his hairstyle, reinvented his screen persona, and turned himself into India's answer to Elvis Presley," The Times wrote about the flamboyant actor adding that after his image makeover, "Overnight, he became a star."

The newspaper said "Kapoor's modesty about his films extended to his own performances in them.

He seemed to be proud of his gambolling, flamboyant manner of acting, but despite all the onscreen dancing he never truly mastered the art of dance."

"Film was always in his life, from infancy to shortly before his death," it said.
