Well..although I am a farmer’s daughter, i dont know much abt gardening .  I mean i grew up (as a kid) watching my mom n dad plant n reap veggies n fruits but that is all, I never learnt how to farm! My hubby does the garden/yard work here but poor thing..he never did that in GY n has no clue …but-he tries. I get lil info from family n friends who used to work in the backdam.

So I am grateful for the tips Mits bhaiya n Cain have shared!!

Thanks!!

so let us gyaff abt gardening..back in GY n now in NA ..old n new stories. ..

Oh Cain..i think u had asked how big our yard was ..ie whn imentioned how many fruit trees we had in our yard.

so here is a pix of the yard , taken a few weeks ago…

abandoned house since my mom died …n neglected yard since my bro died last OCT.

my late bro was using the entire yard for his cows n cut down most of the fruit trees n coconut trees after my mom died in 2014

since Oct..nobody has paid any attention to the land

this pic was taken from the back of the yard..but not at the very end of yard

it is a triple lot n most of the fruit trees were on the middle lot n some on the house lot.  The 3rd lot n half of the entire back was for our cows..but the latrine was at the back plus a β€˜calf-pen’ n we had a huge pond there too(used pond water to wash bhartan n water plants as we had no water pipes in our yards back then..had stand-pipe on the public rd n collected rain water in steel drums n 2 β€˜coppers/kappa” )

so basically all the fruit trees were on the 1st  1/2 of house n middle lots 50032A79-23CB-48DE-A694-BD7685FA8099(my sis used to say we have an β€˜orchard”)

Hey D

I never thought abt it..

but we had 2 of them (probably since or before I was born ) .. they have been there as far as I can remember .

Pls tell me!!

The coppers/kappa was used by the sugar plantation owners to boil cane juice to make sugar. After the new boiling and centrifugal system was introduced the coppers was no longer needed. Also many coppers was left on abandoned sugar estates.

wow..THNX D..

I never knew abt this..this is  good history .

As I mentioned..I can rem these as far back as my memory goes..we had 2 of them..

n there were there up to whn i left Gy in 1990.

I must ask my brothers wht became of them..maybe they eventually rot??

My dad built covers with zinc n made an opening like a trap door for us to dip our buckets to get the CLEAN water..so ours were never open but perfectly secured with zinc sheets . My dad made β€˜pipes’ n attached to the β€˜gutters’ n drained into the coppers!!

Every now n again..my bro or sis used to empty them n lift me up n put me inside to β€˜scrub’ , then fresh water was collected again.

whn rain didnt fill them up, my bro used our donkey cart n took empty steel drums to the roadside pipe n filled them , then came back home n emptied the water from drums into the coppers.  It took 2-3 drums to fill up 1copper
